There is no reliable universal “best” laptop-and-monitor pairing: the right setup depends first on what your laptop can output. Check its exact ports, graphics capability, supported number of external displays, and maximum resolution and refresh rate before choosing a monitor or dock. The five recommendations below are use-case categories, not a tested ranking of specific products.
Start with the laptop, not the monitor
A monitor can advertise a resolution or refresh rate that the laptop cannot drive through its available connection. Check the laptop manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model and configuration, including whether a port carries video and how many displays it supports.

- Ports and video support: Identify the laptop’s HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, Thunderbolt, or USB4 ports. USB-C describes the connector shape; it does not by itself guarantee video output. For USB-C video, look for explicit support for DisplayPort Alternate Mode or Thunderbolt.
- Graphics and display limits: Confirm the GPU and the maximum display resolution and refresh rate it supports, including limits when more than one external screen is connected.
- Power needs: If you want one USB-C cable to handle both video and charging, verify that the laptop accepts USB-C Power Delivery and that the monitor or dock supplies enough power for the laptop.
- Connection chain: For a target such as 4K at 60 Hz, every part of the path—laptop output, cable, adapter or dock, monitor input, and display settings—must support that mode.
Microsoft describes HDMI as a common plug-and-play connection for video and audio. USB-C can carry video, data, and power when the laptop port, monitor, and cable support the necessary features; not every USB-C port or cable does. A dock can consolidate monitors and peripherals, but it cannot override the laptop’s own display limits. Check the laptop and dock documentation together. Microsoft’s monitor connection guidance and HP’s monitor-selection guide explain the relevant connection checks.

| Use case | Monitor category | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday productivity | 24–27 inches; 1080p or 1440p; 60–75 Hz; IPS is a reasonable option to consider | Confirm the laptop supports the chosen resolution and refresh rate; also consider stand adjustment and desk space. |
| Creative work | 27–32 inches; 4K; 60 Hz; IPS or OLED | Check color coverage relevant to the work, such as sRGB or DCI-P3, and verify the full connection path supports 4K at 60 Hz. |
| Laptop gaming | 27–32 inches; 1440p or 4K; 144 Hz or higher | A suitable discrete GPU and an output path capable of the selected mode are important; choose a panel suited to motion. |
| Multi-display desk | One or more monitors connected through a compatible USB-C or Thunderbolt dock | Check the exact laptop’s external-display count and modes, the dock’s host support and outputs, and its charging wattage. |
| Travel or port mismatch | A compact hub or adapter for one display | Confirm that the laptop port, adapter, cable, and monitor support the desired video mode; check charging needs separately. |
HP’s size, resolution, and refresh-rate ranges are selection examples, not guarantees or rules for every laptop. In particular, a high-refresh gaming monitor is useful only if the laptop’s graphics and connection can deliver the mode you intend to use. HP Tech Takes outlines these category ranges and recommends checking ports and graphics before selecting a display.
Choose the connection and cable
HDMI
HDMI is often the simplest direct connection when both devices have compatible ports. The supported resolution and refresh rate still depend on the laptop output, monitor input, and cable; check all three rather than assuming that matching HDMI connectors guarantee a particular mode.

USB-C, Thunderbolt, and USB4
A USB-C connection can carry video when the laptop port supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode or Thunderbolt. A compatible monitor may also provide Power Delivery, allowing one cable to carry video and charge the laptop if the laptop accepts that power. The cable must support the required features as well; a USB-C plug alone is not enough.

Adapters and docks
Use an adapter when the laptop and monitor have different video ports, or a dock when you need several peripherals or displays at a desk. Confirm the exact output modes supported by the dock and the laptop’s maximum display capability. For one travel screen or a simple port mismatch, a compact hub or adapter may be sufficient.

How to connect a laptop to a 4K monitor at 60 Hz
- Check the laptop output: Use the exact laptop model’s specifications to confirm that its HDMI, USB-C, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt, or USB4 output supports 3840 × 2160 at 60 Hz.
- Check every intermediary: If using a dock or adapter, verify that it supports the same resolution and refresh rate. Confirm that the cable is specified for the intended mode.
- Check the monitor input: Confirm that the particular monitor port you plan to use accepts 3840 × 2160 at 60 Hz; different inputs on a monitor may not have identical capabilities.
- Connect and select the mode: Connect the display, then select 3840 × 2160 and 60 Hz in the operating system’s display settings. LG’s Windows guidance gives 3840 × 2160 as the 4K setting and advises checking that the laptop, cable, and any adapter match the required output format. LG’s guidance, dated July 9, 2025, covers these checks.
Can your laptop run two external monitors?
There is no single display count or resolution limit that applies to all laptops. The processor or GPU, port implementation, number of screens, dock, cables, and operating-system settings can affect the available modes. Adding displays can also reduce the resolution or refresh rate available to each screen.
Manufacturer limits are model-specific. For example, Microsoft’s table for the Surface Laptop (8th Edition) with Snapdragon/USB4 lists either one display up to 5120 × 2880 at 60 Hz or 3840 × 2160 at 120 Hz, or two displays up to 3840 × 2160 at 60 Hz. Microsoft notes that improving one screen’s refresh rate or resolution may require reducing the other’s. These figures apply to that listed configuration, not to every Surface or USB4 laptop. Check Microsoft’s Surface display table for the relevant model.

Apple’s 2026 MacBook Air guide describes up to two external displays in listed configurations: two displays up to 6K at 60 Hz or 4K at 144 Hz, or one display up to 8K at 60 Hz, 5K at 120 Hz, or 4K at 240 Hz. Apple says scaled resolutions may affect refresh-rate or HDR availability, advises checking display documentation for cables and adapters, and recommends connecting the highest-resolution display first. These figures apply to configurations in that MacBook Air guide and should not be generalized to other Macs. See Apple’s MacBook Air display guidance.

As a separate conditional example, RTINGS notes that a system capable of one 4K/120 Hz output might need to use two 4K/60 Hz signals or two 1080p/120 Hz signals in a dual-display setup. That illustrates a possible bandwidth trade-off, not a universal rule. RTINGS’ dual-display explanation discusses the limitation.

What dock specifications matter?
Compare the dock’s capabilities with both the laptop and the screens before buying. Technology labels alone do not promise a particular multi-monitor result: the laptop implementation, graphics engine, dock, and connection path all matter.
- Host support: Confirm whether the laptop supports the dock’s required Thunderbolt, USB4, or DisplayPort Alt Mode connection.
- Display outputs: Check the number of external screens and the exact resolution and refresh rate supported for the combination you plan to use.
- Charging: Compare the dock’s power delivery with the laptop’s charging needs; a dock’s video support does not establish that its charging output is sufficient.
- Other ports: Make sure it has the USB, audio, network, or other connections you actually need.
Plugable’s guide, last updated August 20, 2026, describes technology-level examples: Thunderbolt 3 supports up to two DisplayPort 1.2 streams; Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 support up to two DisplayPort 1.4 streams; and Thunderbolt 5 and USB4 v2 support higher-bandwidth modes. These are not guarantees for a particular laptop-and-dock setup. Plugable’s guide recommends checking the laptop manual or manufacturer specifications for its actual Thunderbolt, DisplayPort Alt Mode, or video-output support.
