In Landstalker, movement follows the game’s isometric perspective: on Genesis, use diagonal directions on the Control Pad rather than assuming the screen’s up, down, left and right match the route. The D-button also directs Nigel’s jumps. The exact buttons depend on the edition, and the manuals reviewed do not document a player-controlled camera.
Why movement feels different in Landstalker
The original Genesis instruction manual warns: “Caution: Due to the three-dimensional nature of Landstalker, all game movement is directed by the diagonal direction controls on the Control Pad.” In other words, the route’s apparent screen direction may not correspond to the direction you should press. Think in terms of the game’s diagonal movement axes, not only horizontal and vertical screen movement.
This is a practical way to interpret the manual’s control description, not a claim that every route or jump uses the same input. Regional versions, re-releases, emulators and custom mappings may differ from the two manuals described here.
Genesis controls
The original Genesis manual lists these controls:
| Input | Function |
|---|---|
| D-button (Control Pad) | Moves Nigel, directs jumps, selects menu options, and climbs ladders or vines when pressed up. |
| A | Action, including sword attacks and interactions. |
| B | Jump; also cancels the inventory screen. |
| C | Duplicates A’s functions. |
| Start | Begins the game and opens the inventory. |
The manual identifies the D-button as the control for directing jumps. A useful inference from that description is to choose the intended direction before jumping, then make deliberate, modest directional adjustments rather than holding an uncertain direction throughout the approach.

Genesis Classics PC controls
These mappings are from the Genesis Classics PC manual and may not match other ports or custom configurations:
| Genesis input | Default keyboard key | Function in the PC manual |
|---|---|---|
| D-button | Directional keys | Move |
| A | A | Action (Attack) |
| B | S | Jump / Close Inventory |
| C | D | Action (Attack) |
| X | Q | Not specified in the listed function summary |
| Y | W | Not specified in the listed function summary |
| Z | E | Not specified in the listed function summary |
| Start | Enter | Start Game / Inventory |
The PC manual says a Windows-compatible controller should have a D-pad and at least four other assignable buttons. Controller mappings can be set in the collection’s input configuration. If using a controller, check that configuration before troubleshooting movement; a USB game controller is optional, and the manual’s compatibility criteria do not establish that a particular controller will improve precision.

Interactions on the PC edition
- Press Action to open chests and pick up or drop items.
- To throw a carried item, jump and press Action at the peak of the jump.
- Pressing up on the D-button climbs ladders, ropes or vines when Nigel is directly in front of them.
These details distinguish Action interactions from directional movement and can help when an input seems not to do what you expect.
How to aim jumps more carefully

- Identify the landing area and decide which diagonal direction best matches the route.
- Use a brief directional input to check Nigel’s alignment before committing to the jump.
- Press jump and direct the jump with the D-button deliberately. Avoid holding a direction you are unsure about through the entire approach.
- If the jump misses, change one thing at a time: adjust the approach alignment first, then the direction used during the jump. That makes it easier to tell which input caused the miss.
Can you change or control the camera?
The Genesis and Genesis Classics PC manuals reviewed describe the three-dimensional presentation and movement controls, but do not document a camera button or camera-adjustment setting. They therefore do not establish that players can rotate or recenter the camera. Treat the scene as an isometric view to read, and use the directional controls to align with the route rather than searching for an undocumented camera command.
