Choose a LAMP image when you need a general PHP platform, several sites, custom applications, or direct control of Apache, PHP, the database, virtual hosts, and deployment directories.
Both options can host WordPress. The difference is where the image stops doing work for you: a LAMP image supplies the operating environment, while a WordPress image supplies that environment plus a configured content-management application. That distinction affects setup time, control, upgrades, troubleshooting, and how easily the server can grow beyond one WordPress site.

What the two image types actually provide
LAMP: the application-neutral foundation
LAMP stands for Linux, Apache, MySQL or MariaDB, and PHP. A LAMP one-click image is intended to leave you with a usable PHP server rather than a finished website. DigitalOcean’s current LAMP image uses Ubuntu 24.04, installs the web and database components, configures UFW for SSH, HTTP, and HTTPS, runs MySQL hardening, and includes Certbot for certificate management. The default web root is /var/www/html.

That foundation is deliberately broad. You can deploy WordPress, Laravel, Symfony, a custom PHP API, a legacy application, or several unrelated virtual hosts. The image does not decide your application’s directory structure, database schema, domain mapping, or release process. Those choices remain yours.

WordPress one-click: a prepared application stack
A WordPress one-click image bundles the CMS with its runtime and web-server defaults. DigitalOcean’s current catalog lists Ubuntu 24.04, PHP 8.3 FPM, MySQL 8.0, Caddy, WordPress 7.1.2, WP-CLI, a firewall, and a first-login setup flow. The catalog also describes HTTPS being enabled automatically during first login and a wizard that creates the WordPress administrator account. These version numbers are time-sensitive catalog values, not permanent specifications.
AWS Lightsail describes its WordPress blueprint as a preconfigured, ready-to-use image. Its separate LAMP blueprint includes PHP, Apache, MariaDB, phpMyAdmin, and Composer; AWS also documents a Bitnami LAMP package with ready-to-run Apache, MySQL, PHP, and phpMyAdmin. The exact components therefore depend on the provider and image release, even though the strategic choice is the same: application-focused convenience versus infrastructure-level flexibility.
Decision at a glance
| Decision axis | LAMP image | WordPress one-click image |
|---|---|---|
| Primary use | Custom PHP applications, multiple sites, frameworks, APIs, or a neutral server | A WordPress site or a project that will remain WordPress-first |
| Initial work | Install and configure the application, database or schema, virtual hosts, TLS, and updates | Complete a guided WordPress setup, then configure the site |
| Control | Direct control over Apache modules, PHP settings, database layout, and directories | Faster start with more opinionated web-server and WordPress defaults |
| Extensibility | Any compatible PHP application can be added | WordPress themes, plugins, and WP-CLI are ready immediately |
| Ongoing work | You manage application configuration and more of the stack lifecycle | You still update WordPress, plugins, PHP, the operating system, and the database |
| Growth options | Add virtual hosts, a managed database, queues, APIs, or other services as needed | Provider-documented paths can include managed MySQL, Aurora, object storage for media, and a CDN |
Choose LAMP when the server must stay general-purpose
You are building custom PHP software
Framework applications and APIs often need settings that a WordPress image does not expose in the way your deployment expects. A LAMP image gives you a clean place to choose the PHP version, extensions, Apache modules, document root, environment-variable strategy, queue workers, cron jobs, and deployment layout. You can keep the public document root separate from application code and create a database schema that matches your framework.
You expect more than one application
Multiple domains or subdomains are a strong reason to start with LAMP. Apache virtual hosts can map each hostname to its own directory, PHP pool, logs, and TLS configuration. This prevents a blog, customer portal, internal dashboard, and API from being forced into one WordPress-oriented layout.
You need database and filesystem control
Applications with unusual schemas, reporting databases, import jobs, or strict separation between tenants benefit from choosing the database layout yourself. The same applies when deployments must use a particular release directory, shared upload path, mounted volume, or private storage location.
You are not certain WordPress is permanent
If the project may become a custom application, a LAMP image avoids an early migration from an opinionated stack. You can install WordPress first and replace it later without changing the underlying server model.

Choose a WordPress one-click image when speed and focus matter most
You need one conventional WordPress site
For a business site, publication, portfolio, campaign site, or other conventional installation, the application bundle removes several decisions. WordPress, PHP, the database, a web server, WP-CLI, firewall defaults, and the first-login flow arrive together. You can spend your time on domains, content, themes, plugins, editorial roles, and backups instead of assembling the runtime.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You want a guided first login
The documented first-login flow is valuable when you do not want to manually create the database, edit configuration files, and build the initial administrator account. DigitalOcean’s current WordPress image documents automatic HTTPS setup during this process. You should still verify the domain, certificate, administrator email, and recovery method before treating the site as production-ready.
You prefer provider-tested defaults
An application image narrows the number of choices you must make. That can reduce configuration mistakes for a small team, a short-lived project, or a site maintained by people who do not routinely administer Apache and PHP. The trade-off is that changing those defaults later may require learning how the image’s web server, PHP-FPM service, filesystem, and update process are organized.
How much faster is one-click WordPress?
One-click is faster mainly because it eliminates assembly work, not because WordPress itself runs on a fundamentally different class of server. Installing WordPress on LAMP still requires you to create a database and user, place the application files, set ownership and permissions, configure a virtual host, enable PHP processing, issue a certificate, and complete the web installer. A WordPress image performs or guides much of that sequence.
The time saved is greatest when you are deploying a single standard site. It shrinks when the site needs unusual PHP extensions, custom Apache rules, a separate database host, a nonstandard directory layout, or a carefully scripted release process. In those cases, the image’s defaults may need to be replaced, and troubleshooting unfamiliar defaults can offset the initial gain.
Deploying a LAMP image: the work you own
1. Select the image and plan the layout
- Choose the provider’s LAMP image and confirm the operating-system, PHP, database, and web-server versions shown for that release.
- Decide whether the database will run locally or use a managed MySQL service. DigitalOcean’s current LAMP documentation supports both patterns.
- List every domain, subdomain, application, PHP version, storage location, and database schema you expect to use before creating virtual hosts.
2. Secure the baseline
Confirm that the image’s firewall allows only the traffic you need. DigitalOcean’s LAMP image configures UFW for SSH, HTTP, and HTTPS and runs MySQL hardening. Replace any default administrative credentials, restrict SSH access, and record how you will regain access if a key or account is lost.

3. Configure each application
For every site, create a separate document root and database credentials. Add an Apache virtual host for the domain, point it to the correct public directory, enable the required PHP modules, and test the site locally before changing DNS. The default LAMP web root is /var/www/html, but multiple applications should normally be separated rather than placed in one shared directory.
4. Add HTTPS and deployment procedures
Use the included Certbot tooling to issue certificates for the domains that resolve to the server. Decide whether renewals run automatically and where renewal failures are reported. Then document deployments, database migrations, file permissions, rollback steps, and log locations. A LAMP image gives you the pieces; it does not create this operating procedure for you.
5. Test recovery before launch
Take a database backup and a restorable copy of uploaded files. Test restoring them to a separate instance or staging directory. Also test a certificate renewal, an application rollback, and access through the firewall. These checks matter more on LAMP because the configuration is yours to maintain.

Deploying a WordPress one-click image: the work that remains
1. Confirm the catalog release
Before deployment, check the image’s displayed Ubuntu, PHP, database, web-server, and WordPress versions. Catalog contents change, and plugin compatibility can depend on those versions.
2. Complete the first-login wizard
Use the provider’s documented first-login address or console path, set the WordPress administrator account, confirm the site URL, and verify that HTTPS is active. Do not leave a temporary administrator email, weak password, or unverified certificate in place.
3. Configure WordPress itself
Set the permalink structure, time zone, media limits, user roles, update policy, and backup destination. Remove unused themes and plugins, enable only extensions that have a maintenance owner, and test contact forms, payments, search, caching, and email delivery before publishing.

4. Learn the image’s service layout
Record where Caddy or the image’s chosen web server stores configuration, where PHP-FPM logs errors, how the database is restarted, and how WP-CLI is invoked. Those details determine how quickly you can diagnose a failed plugin, a PHP incompatibility, or a certificate problem.
Which option gives you more control?
LAMP provides more control because it starts below the application layer. You choose Apache modules, virtual-host rules, PHP pools, database placement, filesystem permissions, and deployment tooling. That freedom is useful only if someone on the team is prepared to own the consequences. A misconfigured module, exposed database port, writable application directory, or failed renewal can affect every site on the instance.
A WordPress image gives up some of that choice in exchange for consistency. Its web server, PHP-FPM arrangement, firewall defaults, and application paths are selected for a WordPress workload. You can still edit configuration and install additional software, but changes may diverge from the image’s documented assumptions and make future troubleshooting harder.
Can you run other PHP applications on a WordPress image?
Technically, a WordPress image can be modified to serve another PHP application, but that is not the same as having a neutral LAMP server. You would need to understand the image’s Caddy or web-server configuration, add a separate site definition, create an isolated PHP-FPM pool if required, provision another database and credentials, and ensure that WordPress rewrite rules do not intercept the second application.
This approach is reasonable for a small auxiliary endpoint that shares the server’s lifecycle. It is a poor default for several independent applications, a framework with strict server requirements, or a team that wants repeatable infrastructure. Start with LAMP when the second application is known, important, or likely to grow.

Both images require an explicit maintenance plan. You remain responsible for operating-system security updates, PHP compatibility, database updates, firewall and SSH access, backups, monitoring, and restoration drills. On WordPress, add core, theme, and plugin updates; on LAMP, add the configuration and release process for every application.
Best Value
- WordPress updates: test core, themes, and plugins together, especially after a PHP change.
- PHP updates: check deprecated functions and required extensions before changing versions.
- Database care: monitor storage, test backups, and verify that restores include both schema and application data.
- HTTPS: monitor certificate renewal and confirm that redirects, mixed-content fixes, and scheduled jobs still work.
- Access control: remove unused accounts, protect SSH keys, and limit administrative interfaces.
- Observability: retain web, PHP, database, and system logs long enough to investigate failed deployments.
Scaling and cloud integrations
A LAMP image is a starting point for a broader architecture. You can move the database to a managed service, add additional application instances, separate workers from web traffic, or place several virtual hosts behind a load balancer. The work is more manual because you define the boundaries.
For WordPress on AWS Lightsail, AWS documents integration paths involving managed MySQL, Aurora, S3 media offload, and a CDN. Those services can reduce pressure on a single instance, but they also introduce credentials, network permissions, synchronization, caching, and restore decisions. Choose them because the workload needs the separation, not merely because the option exists.
Migration and recovery considerations
Moving from LAMP to a WordPress image
A migration is practical when the existing site is standard WordPress. Export the database, copy uploads and any required configuration, recreate the domain and certificate, import the database, update site URLs, verify serialized settings, and test plugins before switching DNS. Custom Apache rules, cron jobs, PHP extensions, and filesystem paths may need translation to the new image.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMoving from a WordPress image to LAMP
This direction usually gives you more control but requires you to reproduce the application environment. Preserve the database, wp-content, uploads, scheduled tasks, rewrite behavior, and ownership settings. Confirm that the destination PHP version supports the current site before changing DNS, and keep the original instance available until forms, media, logins, and administrative tasks pass testing.
Recovering after a failed update
Use a tested backup or provider snapshot rather than improvising on the live server. Restore the database and files as a matched set, document the failed component, and reproduce the update in staging before trying again. A snapshot is not a substitute for an independently restorable database and media backup.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose WordPress one-click if there will be one primary WordPress site, the standard stack is acceptable, and reducing initial setup is more valuable than controlling every service.
- Choose LAMP if you will host custom PHP code, multiple applications, multiple domains, unusual database designs, or a deployment layout that must remain framework-neutral.
- Choose LAMP when you expect to change frameworks or add non-WordPress services and do not want to migrate away from application-specific defaults.
- Choose WordPress one-click when a small team needs a guided first login and has no reason to customize Apache or the database topology.
- Whichever image you select, write down the update owner, backup schedule, recovery test, SSH policy, certificate-renewal check, and version-compatibility process before launch.
Final recommendation
The image should match the server’s long-term job, not just the first deployment. A WordPress one-click image is the efficient choice for a focused WordPress site because it packages the CMS, runtime, database, web server, firewall, and initial configuration. A LAMP image is the durable choice for custom PHP, multiple sites, or any environment where Apache, PHP, database structure, and deployment layout must remain under your control. In both cases, the one-click or preconfigured starting point reduces setup; it does not remove the need to patch, secure, back up, monitor, and test the system.
