Kubernetes Node Failures: Cloud Controller Checks vs. Node Problem Detector

Cloud controllers check cloud-instance state; Node Problem Detector reports configured node-level symptoms. Learn how both fit into Kubernetes failure handling.

Cloud-provider checks and Node Problem Detector (NPD) answer different questions. A cloud controller can check whether the VM behind an unhealthy Kubernetes Node still exists; NPD runs on the node and reports configured operating-system and service symptoms. Kubernetes first uses node status and Lease heartbeats to detect reachability problems. In cloud clusters, the provider check can add infrastructure-lifecycle information, while NPD adds local diagnostic signals. They are complementary, not substitutes.

What happens when a Kubernetes node becomes unreachable?

Kubernetes detects node liveness through two heartbeat mechanisms: kubelet status updates and the node’s Lease object. If a node stops responding, the node controller can set its Ready condition to Unknown and apply node-problem taints. Those taints affect scheduling and eviction according to the cluster’s taint, toleration, and controller behavior. See the Kubernetes Nodes documentation for the lifecycle details.

The documented defaults are a five-second node-state check period and a five-minute wait between marking a node Unknown and submitting the first pod eviction request. These are configuration defaults, not a guarantee that every cluster will act on those exact timings: Kubernetes version, controller flags, cluster settings, eviction rate limits, and zone-level safeguards can change the behavior. A missed heartbeat does not mean immediate eviction or rescheduling.

In a cloud environment, the controller may also query the cloud provider about the instance associated with an unhealthy Node. That check can distinguish an unreachable VM that still exists from an instance reported as deleted or terminated. The Cloud Controller Manager documentation describes deleting the Kubernetes Node object when the provider reports that its cloud instance has been deleted, while noting that provider implementations vary. Consult the versioned Kubernetes v1.32 Cloud Controller Manager guide and your provider’s documentation for actual behavior.

Cloud controller check vs. Node Problem Detector

Aspect Cloud-provider check Node Problem Detector
Where the signal comes from Cloud-provider API and infrastructure inventory, considered alongside Kubernetes node health. Node-local logs, system statistics, custom plugins, and kubelet or container-runtime health checks.
Main question Does the VM for this unhealthy Kubernetes Node still exist or remain active? What problems can configured monitors observe and report on this node?
What it can do Provider integration can update or delete Kubernetes Node objects based on provider state. Reports temporary problems as Events and permanent problems as Node Conditions through the Kubernetes exporter; it can also export metrics.
Scope Cloud infrastructure lifecycle and node identity or inventory. Details differ by provider. Node diagnostics and configured health-signal reporting.
What it cannot establish by itself The local operating-system or service symptom that caused a node to become unhealthy. Whether the cloud VM has been deleted.
Operational dependency A cloud-provider integration, including its permissions and API behavior. A daemon on each node, with resource overhead and access/configuration requirements.

The distinction is infrastructure existence versus symptoms visible from the node. An instance query does not provide NPD’s local diagnostic detail; NPD does not establish provider inventory state. Kubernetes defines NPD as a daemon for monitoring and reporting node health in its Monitor Node Health guide.

What does Node Problem Detector monitor?

NPD is deployed either as a DaemonSet or as a standalone daemon. Its available monitors include:

Anker USB-C Hub, 5-in-1 USB Hub for Laptops, 4K HDMI Multiport Adapter
  • 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
  • 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
  • Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
  • 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • System logs: monitors configured log sources for problems. The Kubernetes guide notes that kernel issues use the kernel log format and warns that the system-log directory can differ by operating-system distribution.
  • System statistics: collects node statistics that can be used to detect problems.
  • Custom plugins: runs user-defined checks to surface environment-specific symptoms.
  • Kubelet and container runtime health checks: checks these node services and reports detected issues.

NPD can report to the Kubernetes API server and the guide lists Prometheus and Stackdriver exporters. Reporting a condition or event makes a problem visible to Kubernetes and monitoring systems; it does not, by itself, repair the node or prove that a process has stopped.

Should you use NPD with a cloud controller?

Use both when you need both kinds of information and actions: provider-side knowledge of whether an instance exists, and node-local health signals that help explain what is failing. In practice, Kubernetes heartbeats and node lifecycle handling form the baseline; the cloud integration adds infrastructure state in supported environments; NPD can report configured diagnostics concurrently.

Before deploying NPD, review the example rather than copying it unchanged. The Kubernetes sample DaemonSet uses privileged access, host networking, and a read-only mount of host logs, alongside resource requests and limits. Confirm that the required privileges and mount paths fit your security policy and Linux distribution. The guide recommends NPD and characterizes its additional per-node resource overhead as usually acceptable when a resource limit is set; it does not publish a comparative benchmark against cloud-provider checks.

  • Verify the Kubernetes release, controller flags, and eviction settings behind any timing assumptions.
  • Confirm what your cloud provider’s controllers query, and what they do when an instance is missing, deactivated, or terminated.
  • Set NPD log sources and paths for the node operating system; choose monitors that produce actionable signals.
  • Review NPD permissions, networking, host mounts, and per-node resource limits.
  • Check taints and tolerations so the placement and eviction effects of node conditions match your workload policy.

Why can pods still run on a node marked unreachable?

A control-plane decision is not the same as stopping a process on an isolated machine. During a network partition, the API server may be unable to communicate with the node’s kubelet. Kubernetes can mark the node unreachable and schedule replacement work elsewhere, while pods already running on the partitioned node continue running until communication recovers or the node is otherwise stopped. The Taints and Tolerations documentation describes this limitation. An API-level eviction therefore does not prove that the old process has terminated.

Where Node Readiness Controller fits

Node Readiness Controller is a separate, condition-driven policy mechanism, not another health checker. It manages taints declaratively from node conditions, with continuous enforcement for conditions that can fail later and bootstrap-only enforcement for one-time initialization requirements. It can consume conditions reported by NPD, but it does not perform NPD’s checks or query cloud-instance existence. The Kubernetes project’s February 3, 2026 announcement, updated April 22, 2026, described it as a new project seeking community feedback. Check its release and maturity for the Kubernetes version and environment you intend to use.
