Replication and Kubernetes self-healing help keep services running through supported failures; backups let you return to a retained recovery point after data or cluster loss. They address different risks, so production recovery plans often use both. Choose based on the failures you need to survive, the data each method covers, and your workload’s recovery point and recovery time objectives.
What is the difference between Kubernetes backup and replication?
Replication keeps additional or live copies of data or workloads available. It can reduce interruption when a component fails, but a replica may also reproduce deletion or corruption. It is not automatically a historical, independent backup.

Backup creates a retained recovery point that can be restored. It is intended to help recover after accidental deletion, corruption, storage loss, or a broader disaster. A backup only helps if it covers the state and data the application needs and can be restored within the required time.
Kubernetes self-healing and storage failover can support availability too, but they are not substitutes for retained recovery points. Kubernetes describes reattaching a persistent volume to a Pod on another node after node failure when the storage system supports that behavior; this does not establish a way to recover a deleted or corrupted volume. See Kubernetes self-healing and Kubernetes volumes.

What does each approach recover?
etcd backups protect Kubernetes API state
Kubernetes documentation states, “All Kubernetes objects are stored in etcd.” A periodic etcd snapshot can preserve cluster state and critical information for scenarios such as losing all control-plane nodes. Kubernetes recommends encrypting snapshot files. See Kubernetes guidance for operating etcd clusters.
Persistent-volume data needs its own protection
An etcd snapshot is not a backup of persistent-volume contents. Application data on PVs needs a separate protection plan, such as storage snapshots or file-system data movement. Kubernetes defines a standard volume-snapshot API through CSI, but the storage implementation and destination determine where the copy lives and how durable or portable it is. A snapshot on the same storage system may not survive loss of that system. See Kubernetes volume snapshots.

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Applications also depend on state outside the cluster
Inventory what the service requires beyond Kubernetes objects and PVs, including external databases, secrets, certificates, and other dependencies. Identify which protection mechanism covers each item; a resource or disk snapshot alone does not prove that every application dependency is recoverable.
How to choose for your recovery goals
Start with the failure scenarios that matter, then define the amount of data loss and downtime the workload can tolerate. There is no universal RPO or RTO that fits every Kubernetes application.

- Failure scope: Decide whether you need to handle Pod or node failure, accidental object deletion, control-plane loss, storage loss, site or region loss, or malicious and widespread corruption. Replication and self-healing can address some bounded failures; a retained backup is important when you need to recover from destructive events.
- Recovery point objective (RPO): Set how much recent change the workload can afford to lose. Derive this from business requirements and the schedule or cadence of backups and replication, rather than assuming a fixed figure.
- Recovery time objective (RTO): Set how quickly the service must return. Count the full recovery path: provisioning or rebuilding a cluster, restoring storage, recreating resources, starting the application, and validating it.
- Coverage: Map Kubernetes API objects and configuration, PV contents, and external dependencies to the mechanism that protects each. Confirm what is included rather than treating “cluster backup” as proof that all application state is covered.
- Isolation and retention: Check whether a recovery copy is retained outside the primary failure domain and protected from the same deletion or compromise that could affect the source.
- Consistency: Determine whether writes must be coordinated or quiesced. A point-in-time storage copy by itself does not establish application-level consistency.
- Portability: Confirm whether recovery targets an existing or rebuilt cluster, and check compatible Kubernetes and API versions, CSI or provider support, plugins, credentials, and access to object storage.
- Restore proof: Schedule exercises that verify restored resources and volume contents, validate application integrity, and measure actual RPO and RTO.
Where Velero and Kubernetes snapshots fit
Velero documents workflows for backing up and restoring cluster resources and persistent volumes, including on-demand and scheduled operations, filters by resource type, namespace, or label, object storage, and optional provider disk snapshots. It also describes migration and replication use cases. See the Velero overview.
These parts do different jobs: Velero orchestrates resource-protection workflows and can integrate volume protection; CSI and the storage system supply snapshot operations. Kubernetes VolumeSnapshot requires a supporting CSI driver, the snapshot controller, and CSI sidecar components. Check the documentation for the Kubernetes, Velero, plugin, CSI driver, and storage versions actually deployed.

Velero’s file-system-backup documentation describes a route for volume types without a usable snapshot path, but the cited documentation labels that capability beta and notes that copying a live filesystem is less consistent than snapshot approaches. Its maturity and behavior are version-sensitive, so verify the documentation for the installed release before relying on it. See Velero file-system backup documentation.

Having backups and being able to recover are distinct concerns, as CNCF’s Kubernetes disaster recovery guidance emphasizes. Test restoration into a suitable existing or rebuilt cluster, then check that resources, volume contents, application data, and dependencies behave as expected. Record the elapsed time and the age of the restored data, and compare both with the workload’s RTO and RPO.

Test a representative failure path rather than only confirming that a backup job completed. Include the credentials, storage access, plugins, and cluster prerequisites the restore depends on. A recovery plan that cannot access its copies or recreate required dependencies is not a usable recovery path.
