KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe 2020 did not take place in Amsterdam. CNCF moved the conference online during the COVID-19 pandemic: the original plan was an in-person event in Amsterdam from March 30 to April 2, while the final virtual conference ran August 17–20, 2020. CNCF reported more than 18,700 registrations, a 70% attendance rate and 72% first-time attendees.

From Amsterdam to a virtual conference

CNCF announced the Europe 2020 edition for Amsterdam on March 30–April 2. That schedule was superseded by the online event held Monday, August 17 through Thursday, August 20. The chronology is documented in CNCF’s January announcement, its conference report and the 2020 annual report.

What CNCF reported about attendance

The following figures come from CNCF’s 2020 reporting and are organizer-reported measurements rather than independent attendance audits.

Measure Reported result
Registrations More than 18,700
Attendance rate 70%
First-time KubeCon + CloudNativeCon attendees 72% of registrants
Attendees affiliated with an end-user organization 45%
Participating companies 7,800, including 3,598 end-user companies
Time on the conference platform 61% of attendees spent at least 10 hours

The registration, attendance and first-time-attendee figures are in CNCF’s post-event report. The company, audience-composition and platform-engagement figures are in the September 2020 transparency report.

Program and session access

CNCF’s 2020 annual report described more than 215 live and on-demand sessions. The program included keynotes, breakout talks, tutorials, maintainer sessions and an expanded 101 track. Live content began at 13:00 CEST each day.

The January announcement proposed more than 240 sessions for the Amsterdam edition, covering topics such as Kubernetes sustainability, air-gapped deployments, service mesh, regulatory compliance, high-performance computing, tracing, Prometheus and neuro-inclusivity. That was the proposed in-person program; it should not be treated as proof that every listed session appeared unchanged in the virtual schedule.

CNCF’s August look-back said presentation PDFs and closed-caption transcripts could be reached from individual talks in the schedule. The Linux Foundation event archive also points to the archived schedule and session slides. Availability of individual files may vary today.

Feedback and representation

CNCF reported an overall average satisfaction score of 87%. Session feedback collected through Sched.com averaged 9.1 out of 10. In its transparency post, CNCF characterized the event as successful based on attendance, diversity and positive feedback.

CNCF also reported that 74% of keynote speakers identified as women or gender non-conforming. These figures describe the organizer’s reported speaker and survey measures; they do not establish how the event would compare with another conference using different definitions or collection methods.

How to use the report today

  1. Start with the CNCF event report for the headline attendance and first-timer figures.
  2. Use the Linux Foundation archive to locate the historical schedule and available slides.
  3. Open an individual schedule entry before relying on a PDF or transcript, because the archive does not guarantee that every file remains available.
  4. Read the transparency report when you need the survey, engagement, company-participation or diversity methodology described by CNCF.

What the 2020 edition shows

This edition is best understood as CNCF’s first large-scale virtual KubeCon + CloudNativeCon rather than as a normal Amsterdam conference with a streaming option. Its reported reach was substantial, and the high proportion of first-time attendees indicates that the online format opened the event to many people who had not previously attended. The published numbers remain CNCF’s own measurements, so comparisons with other conferences require matching definitions for registration, attendance, satisfaction and survey response.
