On 11 May 2021, the Linux Foundation announced that it would host the Lura Project, created from KrakenD’s donated core framework and engine. KrakenD did not disappear: its Community and Enterprise gateway editions continued as assembled products built on the underlying framework. Today, KrakenD describes Community Edition as free, self-hosted, open source and Apache 2.0 licensed; its current plugin policy also matters for deployments that rely on Go plugins.
What happened when KrakenD joined the Linux Foundation?
The change announced on 11 May 2021 was a governance and stewardship change for KrakenD’s core, not the end of the KrakenD product. KrakenD donated its core framework and engine, which became the Lura Project under the Linux Foundation. The foundation described Lura as “a stateless, distributed, high-performance API Gateway that enables microservices adoption.” Linux Foundation announcement, 11 May 2021.
The Linux Foundation provided a neutral home for the project and an open-governance setting. KrakenD’s team initially formed Lura’s Technical Steering Committee, according to KrakenD’s announcement. KrakenD announcement.
Is KrakenD the same as Lura?
They are closely related, but the names refer to different layers. Lura is the donated open-source engine and framework. KrakenD Community and Enterprise are assembled gateway editions built using that framework. KrakenD describes Lura as a library of components for assembling custom gateways for cloud-native and on-premises deployments. KrakenD announcement.

In practical terms, a developer can work with Lura as a framework, while an organization choosing a KrakenD edition uses a packaged gateway product. The project transition did not mean that the KrakenD name or its editions were replaced by Lura.
What can Lura and KrakenD do?
Lura and KrakenD are designed for API gateway workloads in distributed microservice environments. They use declarative configuration and can aggregate responses from multiple backend services into a response for a client. The gateway is stateless and distributed, making it suitable for deployment patterns where gateway instances can be scaled across infrastructure rather than relying on a single stateful gateway node. The underlying framework is intended for high-performance gateway deployments, but the available sources do not establish an independent benchmark or a comparable performance figure. The project’s architecture and stated purpose should not be read as a quantified guarantee for a particular deployment.
Is KrakenD still open source?
Yes. KrakenD’s current official pages describe Community Edition as free, self-hosted, stateless and licensed under Apache 2.0; Lura remains the Linux Foundation-hosted engine. KrakenD and KrakenD GitHub organization.

Community Edition and Enterprise are separate editions. Community is the open-source option; Enterprise is KrakenD’s commercial edition. The 2021 project announcement did not convert the Community edition into a closed product or make Lura synonymous with Enterprise.
How widely is KrakenD used?
KrakenD reported 1.8 million online KrakenD servers in a month in its 2021 announcement. KrakenD, 2021. The KrakenD GitHub organization’s profile, accessed in 2026, says approximately two million servers run KrakenD monthly around the world. KrakenD GitHub organization.

There is a significant compatibility change for Go plugins: KrakenD says Community Edition and Lura will no longer support them starting with version 3.0. KrakenD plugin update, June 2026. The precise release timing and migration guidance should be checked in KrakenD’s current release notes and documentation before upgrading, because this is a version-dependent product policy.

If a deployment depends on Go plugins, inventory those extensions and identify supported alternatives before moving to version 3.0. The change is specifically about Go-plugin support in Community Edition and Lura; it should not be generalized to every kind of extension or assumed to describe Enterprise without checking its current documentation.
What the Linux Foundation move means for users
The 2021 announcement separated the open framework’s governance from the continued KrakenD editions: Lura became the foundation-hosted project, while KrakenD remained the product family. For users, that distinction helps clarify where to look: Lura for the framework and its project governance, KrakenD for edition-specific packaging and product documentation.
