Before you join a gym, check the full contract for the total cost, minimum term, renewal date, cancellation method, and any separate recurring add-ons. There is no single cancellation rule for every U.S. gym membership: your rights depend on your state, contract, how you enrolled and paid, and whether the facility is operating.
What to check in the contract before you sign
Read the complete agreement rather than relying on a salesperson’s summary. Work out what you will pay over the initial term, not just the advertised introductory rate. Identify the payment schedule, enrollment and annual fees, the minimum commitment, and any charge for ending the membership early.

Check which services and locations are included, when the agreement renews, what the price will be after a promotion, how much notice cancellation requires, and exactly how to submit it. Ask whether personal training, towel service, or other amenities are separate recurring agreements; an add-on may have its own billing and cancellation terms.

North Carolina’s Department of Justice also advises consumers to understand the cancellation policy, included services, and total cost, and to obtain an exact copy of the agreement.

How to compare gyms fairly
Compare more than the monthly price. New York’s Attorney General recommends contacting or visiting at least two other clubs and considering price and payment timing, hours, classes, and access to multiple locations. Also compare contract length, renewal terms, cancellation method, and add-on charges against what you will actually use.
Cancellation rights depend on your state and circumstances
Do not assume there is a universal federal three-day right to cancel a gym membership. State rules differ, and the applicable rule can depend on the contract, how and when you paid, whether the gym is open, and whether it has already provided services. These state examples are not a substitute for checking the law where you live.

New York
For contracts covered by New York’s Health Club Services Act, the Attorney General says contracts generally cannot exceed 36 months or $3,600 per year, with an exception for tennis and racquetball facilities. Covered consumers may cancel within three days of signing. Certain events, including the club ceasing services, moving 25 or more miles from any seller-operated club, or a significant qualifying disability, may also support cancellation. The state summary describes renewal cancellation windows and says clubs must permit cancellation through methods that include a website, email, telephone, mail, or in person. Check the state’s health clubs and gyms guidance for the details and conditions.
Georgia
Georgia’s Attorney General describes a seven-business-day cancellation right for covered contracts. For a presale membership, the seven business days run after the gym is fully operational and available for use. Under the described statutory clause, a consumer may owe fair market value for services received, capped at $50. See the state’s presales and seven-day cancellation guidance; do not apply this rule to another state.

Connecticut
Connecticut’s Department of Consumer Protection says health-club contracts may run for up to two years, and contracts longer than one year must also offer a one-year option. Its guidance describes limits on automatic renewal, a maximum one-month renewal period when an automatic-renewal clause is used, and written acceptance and payment conditions for renewal options. North Carolina
North Carolina’s Department of Justice describes a three-day cancellation right when a consumer pays before receiving all or part of the contracted services and the agreement is covered by the state’s prepaid entertainment contract law. It is not an unconditional three-day right for every membership. See North Carolina’s health-club guidance.

For your own contract, check your state attorney general or consumer-protection agency and read the agreement. The relevant facts include your state, the contract language, when and how you enrolled and paid, whether the facility is open, and whether you have received services.
How to handle renewals and recurring charges
An automatic-renewal clause can mean charges continue unless you cancel in the way required by the agreement and applicable law. Read renewal notices and check the amount, particularly if a promotional rate has ended. The FTC’s consumer guidance on auto-renewals and recurring subscriptions recommends following the business’s cancellation instructions, keeping records, monitoring statements afterward, and disputing continued charges.

- Before joining: Note the initial term’s end date, renewal date, notice deadline, post-promotion price, and cancellation channel for both the membership and each add-on.
- Keep your records: Save the full signed agreement and applicable promotional terms.
- When cancelling: Follow the contract and state-law procedure. Send a dated request through a method that leaves a record, and keep a copy and proof of delivery or submission.
- After cancelling: Check your bank or card statements. If charges continue, contact the card issuer or bank to dispute them, follow up with the gym in writing, and consider reporting the issue to the FTC and your state attorney general.
Blocking or replacing a card does not, by itself, establish that you have ended your contractual obligations. Give cancellation notice separately under the applicable agreement and law, and address any continued charge with your payment provider.
Why clear cancellation terms matter
On August 20, 2025, the FTC sued Fitness International, LLC and Fitness & Sports Clubs, LLC, operators of LA Fitness and other gym brands. The FTC alleged that the companies made it exceedingly difficult to cancel memberships and related recurring services, citing alleged barriers such as in-person or mail requirements, difficulty accessing forms, limited availability of a particular employee, and unclear written instructions. It also alleged that add-on services were not clearly disclosed as separately cancellable.
The FTC sought injunctive relief and money back for harmed consumers, alleging violations of the FTC Act and the Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act. The complaint is an allegation; the agency’s release said the case would be decided by a court. It is an example of why cancellation terms deserve attention, not evidence that every gym uses the same practices. The FTC’s announcement of the lawsuit also reported that the operators had more than 600 locations and over 3.7 million members nationwide. It gave a $30-to-$299 monthly range for those operators’ memberships, depending on the gym, alongside optional add-ons; that is not a general estimate of U.S. gym prices.
