The Kitronik Smart Greenhouse Kit is a hands-on BBC micro:bit project for measuring plant-growing conditions and coding responses such as watering. It includes a greenhouse enclosure, control board, pump and moisture sensor, but not the micro:bit, batteries or growing materials. Kitronik documents support for micro:bit V1 and V2, MakeCode blocks, and tutorials that guide learners from sensing to automation.
What the Smart Greenhouse Kit does
The project combines a small greenhouse enclosure with an Environmental Control Board that reads conditions and controls connected devices. Learners can explore how temperature, humidity and soil moisture relate to plant care, then write code to respond to those inputs.

The board’s BME280 sensor measures temperature, barometric pressure and humidity. A real-time clock supports time-based activities, while the board also provides two 1A outputs for devices such as a pump, fan or heater pad, a servo output and an onboard piezo buzzer. ZIP LED indicators and an expansion connection provide visual feedback, and three additional micro:bit pins are exposed for crocodile-clip connections. The BBC micro:bit is separate. Kitronik’s documentation and the retailer listing identify compatibility with micro:bit V1 and V2. You will also need power—three AA batteries or a compatible supply for the board—and seeds plus soil or another suitable growing medium. The retailer suggests cress, sprouting white mustard, and micro-herbs or micro-greens as fast-sprouting options. These are suggestions, not a guarantee of a particular growing result.
Power and setup to plan for
The board can run from three AA batteries or through its 2.1 mm DC jack; its regulated 3V supply powers an inserted micro:bit. Kitronik also describes a solar-cell input that can charge rechargeable batteries when installed. Check the current documentation for voltage limits and the correct power arrangement before choosing a plug-in supply or connecting a solar cell. Do not assume that any adapter or battery arrangement is suitable.

- Check the micro:bit. Have a V1 or V2 board ready; it is not part of the greenhouse kit.
- Choose power. Prepare three AA batteries or a supply confirmed as compatible with the board’s documented input requirements.
- Gather growing materials. Provide seeds and soil or another growing medium appropriate for the crop and enclosure.
- Review the code and wiring guide. Use Kitronik’s documentation before connecting outputs, sensors or any externally powered device.
What learners can code
Kitronik provides a custom MakeCode extension with blocks for ZIP LEDs, the clock, sensors, inputs and outputs, and data logging. The sensor blocks read pressure, temperature and humidity; general input/output blocks access pins 0, 1 and 2. The product documentation also lists MakeCode Blocks, JavaScript and Python as programming options.
Kitronik’s tutorial sequence covers seven activities: a visual thermometer, ZIP LED hue, automatic watering, growlight control, timed watering, water-level sensing and data logging. Together these offer a path from displaying a sensor reading to building rules around a condition or schedule. The tutorials describe project activities, not measured learning gains or guaranteed plant-growth outcomes.

Is it suitable for a classroom or home project?
It is a good fit when the goal is to combine basic coding with physical inputs and outputs: learners can observe conditions, use sensor values in a program, and see an output such as a pump or light respond. The supplied pump and moisture sensor make watering a natural project, while the extension and tutorials provide a supported starting point.
Before choosing it, consider the complete setup rather than the kit alone:

- You already own a micro:bit: check that it is V1 or V2, then budget for power and growing supplies if needed.
- You do not own a micro:bit: plan to obtain one separately; the greenhouse kit does not include it.
- You want to grow cress: cress is among the retailer’s suggested fast-sprouting crops, but seeds and growing medium are still separate.
- You want a mostly self-contained purchase: this is not one. Verify the listing contents and identify the missing board, power source and planting materials before ordering.
- You want to use a separate control board: Kitronik’s Environmental Control Board is also documented as a standalone item, so compare its contents with the complete greenhouse kit rather than assuming the same enclosure and accessories are included.
