Kobo is worth a closer look if you want broader stated file-format support, on-device public-library borrowing where it is supported, or features such as color screens, page-turn buttons, and stylus compatibility on select models. The deciding factors are usually where you get books and which exact device has the features you need—not a universal winner. Library access depends on country, library, and individual title, so check those before buying.
Current Kindle and Kobo models at a glance
These are model-specific examples, not equivalent tiers. Amazon’s device guide, accessed October 4, 2026, identifies current Kindle lines including Kindle (11th Generation), Paperwhite (12th Generation), Colorsoft, and Scribe models. Kobo’s U.S. lineup page lists Libra Colour, Clara Colour, and Clara BW. Features and prices can change; confirm the live listing for your country before purchase.

Where you get ebooks matters most
Choose Kindle if your reading is centered on Amazon
If you already own Kindle books or usually shop in Amazon’s Kindle store, a Kindle keeps that library and device workflow together. The cited sources do not establish that either brand has a larger overall catalog or lower ebook prices, so compare the books you actually want rather than assuming one store is cheaper or more comprehensive.

Consider Kobo if you bring your own ebook files
Kobo says its readers support a wide range of ebook formats, but its product page does not provide a complete format-and-DRM compatibility matrix. Check the file type and any copy protection on your specific books before relying on a Kobo for them.
Amazon’s Send to Kindle service accepts EPUB, PDF, HTML, RTF, TXT, and several image formats. Sending an EPUB uses Amazon’s service to process the file for the Kindle library; it does not mean an arbitrary EPUB can simply be copied to a Kindle and read through native EPUB support. See Amazon’s Send to Kindle document guidance.

Public-library borrowing depends on your country and each title
Neither brand guarantees that every library ebook will work. Your library’s catalog, publisher licensing, loan availability, and format determine what you can borrow.
- Kindle in the United States: Libby says most Libby books can be read on Kindle e-readers, but delivery depends on the individual title being available in Kindle format. Details: Libby’s Kindle e-reader guidance.
- Kobo with built-in Libby/OverDrive: Supported Kobo models can borrow on the device in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, according to Kobo’s feature-support page. Model and title support still vary; Libby warns that some loans are not Kobo-compatible. See Kobo’s feature-support list and Libby’s Kobo guidance.
Before buying for library use, check that your country appears on the Kobo support list, that your library supports the relevant service, and that the titles you want are compatible. Kobo’s borrowing instructions are at Kobo’s public-library borrowing guide.

Match the device to the way you read
You mostly buy from Amazon or already own Kindle books
Start with Kindle. Then compare the basic Kindle and Paperwhite against the features you will use, such as water resistance, warm light, storage, and screen size. Amazon’s current guide also includes Colorsoft and Scribe models; check the individual model rather than relying on older comparisons that may omit newer generations.
You borrow frequently and want to borrow on the e-reader
Look at Kobo if built-in library borrowing is supported where you live and by your library. In the United States, a Kindle can also work for Libby loans when a specific title is offered in Kindle format. In either case, confirm access to the particular books you plan to read.

You want color for covers, comics, or annotations
Kobo offers color options including Libra Colour and Clara Colour. Color E Ink is not the same kind of display as a tablet’s LCD, and Kobo describes its palette as subtle. There is no independent side-by-side screen-quality test in the cited sources, so if color appearance is decisive, inspect the specific model in person if possible. Rakuten Kobo described the Libra Colour and Clara Colour as bringing books and its bookstore to life with “a beautiful spectrum of gentle hues” in its April 10, 2024 launch announcement; that is the company’s description, not an independent assessment.

Kobo Libra Colour supports Kobo Stylus 2, which is sold separately. Stylus compatibility is model-specific; check Kobo’s feature list for other supported models before purchasing a pen. Kindle Scribe is also in Amazon’s current device lineup, but the cited sources do not provide a direct comparison of handwriting features between it and Kobo models.

You want physical page-turn buttons
Kobo lists buttons on Libra Colour and select other models. Amazon’s current guide describes buttons on the Oasis as a feature of its 2019-generation device; it is not presented as a current Kindle lineup choice. Check the exact Kobo model if buttons are essential.
You read near water
Compare the exact model’s water-resistance rating rather than assuming a whole brand is waterproof. Amazon lists IPX8 water resistance for Paperwhite (12th Generation). Kobo lists water resistance on selected models, including Libra Colour, Clara Colour, and Clara BW, on its feature-support page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check storage, accessories, and claims carefully
Storage and extras differ by model: for instance, the Paperwhite Signature Edition has 32 GB and wireless charging, while the standard Paperwhite has 16 GB. Kobo Libra Colour has 32 GB and supports an optional stylus. Kobo’s comparison page also shows that audiobook playback, cloud integration, waterproofing, and other features are not universal across its family. Match the feature list to the specific model rather than assuming it applies to every Kindle or Kobo.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRakuten Kobo says the exteriors of the devices listed on its comparison page contain at least 85.5% recycled content, comprising 75.5% post-consumer recycled content and 10% ocean-bound plastic. This is a company-published material-content figure, not an independent lifecycle assessment.
A quick decision path
- Check your library first. Confirm country support, your library’s service, and compatibility of the books you want.
- Check where your existing ebooks live. If they are mainly in Amazon’s Kindle library, begin with Kindle. If you rely on personal files, verify each file’s format and DRM against the device and transfer method.
- Choose must-have hardware features. Compare the exact models for color, size, buttons, stylus support, lighting, waterproofing, and storage.
- Confirm current local pricing. Prices and availability vary by market and can change; the Kobo amounts above are U.S. listing observations from October 4, 2026.
The sources cited here do not provide a reliable independent head-to-head measure of battery runtime, screen performance, durability, catalog size, or total ownership cost. Compare those concerns using the exact models and books you are considering rather than treating either brand’s claims as a direct test against the other.
