Choose the entry-level Kindle if you want a compact device for straightforward reading. Choose the Kindle Paperwhite if you prefer a larger screen, adjustable warm light, and water resistance. The right choice depends less on basic book reading—which both handle—than on those differences and the price of the exact model available where you shop.

Which Kindle should you buy?
Choose the entry-level Kindle for compact, straightforward reading
The Kindle is the better fit if you mainly want an e-reader for books and value a smaller device over Paperwhite-specific features. Amazon’s 2024 announcement gives it a 6-inch, 300 ppi display and a weight of 158 g. It has an adjustable front light, so it is not limited to daylight reading. Choose Paperwhite for a larger screen, warm light, or water resistance
Paperwhite makes sense if you want more display area, adjustable warm light, or the listed IPX8 rating. The 2024 12th-generation model has a 7-inch, 300 ppi screen; Amazon lists up to 12 weeks of battery life. Those features may justify a higher price for your habits, but the basic Kindle remains a capable choice for reading books. Amazon’s 2024 announcement; Amazon’s support page.

What IPX8 water resistance does—and does not—mean
Amazon lists IPX8 water resistance for the 12th-generation Paperwhite, but that rating is not permission to use the device underwater. Amazon says testing covers brief accidental immersion under specified conditions; it also warns that damage can compromise water protection and that the device is not intended for underwater use. Do not treat the rating as protection from every liquid or situation. Amazon’s water-resistance guidance.

Battery, storage, and ads: details to check
Battery estimates are not guarantees
Current reporting gives maximum estimates of up to six weeks for the entry Kindle and up to 12 weeks for Paperwhite. Amazon advises lowering light settings to conserve battery. Your actual time between charges depends on use, so treat the figures as estimates rather than a promise. TechRadar’s 2026 comparison; Amazon’s support page.
Check ad status on the listing
Some configurations show sponsored screensavers and ads on the home screen. Amazon says supported ad-included Kindles can have ads removed for a one-time fee, with the amount shown during the account checkout process; the fee should not be assumed from an old price reference. Compare the price of the exact model you can buy
Prices vary by date, marketplace, generation, and configuration. Amazon announced US launch prices of $109.99 for Kindle and $159.99 for Paperwhite in October 2024; those are historical launch prices, not current quotes. TechRadar listed temporary US sale prices of $84.99 and $124.99 shortly before its October 2026 sale coverage. Do not compare those figures as if they were simultaneous, permanent prices. Check the current local listing and whether it includes ads before deciding whether Paperwhite’s added features are worth the difference.
