Kindle Update 5.20.1: What’s New, Which Models Get It, and What’s Separate

Kindle 5.20.1 is listed for select Kindle models. Here’s what’s reported for Scribe, which devices are listed, and how Kindle Click differs from the update.

Kindle software version 5.20.1 is listed for several Scribe models and selected 2024 Kindle devices. Its most notable reported additions are voice dictation on supported Scribes and handwritten sticky notes in fixed-layout books or documents. Kindle Click, Amazon’s page-turn remote, is a separate accessory—not a feature added by this update.

What’s new in Kindle update 5.20.1?

The clearest feature details are in an October 6, 2026 report that reproduces Kindle Scribe 5.20.1 release-note text. The official Kindle software page lists version 5.20.1 for supported models, but the Scribe release-note page available at the time showed older entries. Treat the specific feature details below as secondary reporting rather than a verified, current Amazon changelog. (Amazon’s Kindle software updates page; The eBook Reader Blog’s report)

Voice dictation on supported Scribes

The report says the update adds microphone dictation for entering text in Search, book and document annotations, and notebook names. It says the 2022 and 2024 Scribe models lack a microphone, so they cannot use dictation. The reported feature therefore depends on the specific Scribe model, not just installation of version 5.20.1.

Handwritten sticky notes in fixed-layout content

The reported release notes say users can add handwritten sticky notes in fixed-layout eBooks and personal documents, using the writing toolbar or the text-selection action menu. The stated scope is fixed-layout content; it does not establish that handwritten sticky notes work in every Kindle book format.

Which Kindle models are listed for version 5.20.1?

Amazon’s software-updates page lists 5.20.1 for the following models. Amazon advises readers to identify their exact Kindle model before downloading an update; the online list may change as rollout progresses. (Amazon Kindle software updates)

  • Kindle Scribe (2022)
  • Kindle Colorsoft 1st Generation
  • Kindle Paperwhite 12th Generation (2024)
  • Kindle 11th Generation (2024)

The same Amazon page lists version 5.19.2 for Kindle 11th Generation (2022) and Kindle Paperwhite 11th Generation. A model’s listed firmware version is not proof that it supports every feature described for Scribe.

Is Kindle Click part of update 5.20.1?

No. Amazon announced Kindle Click as a Bluetooth page-turn remote in its 2026 Kindle lineup announcement. It is a separate accessory, not a firmware feature attributed to version 5.20.1. Amazon says Click works with all new Kindle devices and Kindle models from 2024 onward; that claim does not establish compatibility with older models. Its announcement price was $34.99. How Click differs from the Page-Turn Cover

Amazon also announced a $79.99 Page-Turn Cover with physical buttons for the Paperwhite Signature Edition and Colorsoft Signature Edition. Unlike the separate Bluetooth remote, it is a fitted cover, and Amazon’s announcement does not describe it as a general accessory for every Kindle model. Both prices are announcement prices, not a guarantee of current or localized pricing. (Amazon’s Kindle lineup announcement)

How to check your Kindle’s update

  1. Identify your exact Kindle model and generation. Amazon’s software-updates page recommends confirming the model before downloading.
  2. Open Amazon’s Kindle software updates page and find that model in the list to see the version Amazon currently specifies.
  3. Compare the listed version with your device’s installed software. If Amazon’s model-specific instructions call for a manual download, follow those instructions for your exact model rather than using a file intended for another Kindle.

Version availability can differ by model, and Amazon’s list may change during rollout. The reported dictation and sticky-note details are specific to Scribe release notes reproduced by an independent report; consult current model-specific notes if you need confirmation before relying on either feature.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
