If your Kindle won’t download or install update 5.20.1, first check whether Amazon lists that version for your exact Kindle model. The update is not for every Kindle. If it is listed for yours, work through Wi-Fi checks before trying Amazon’s manual computer-transfer process. Amazon’s official pages do not confirm a specific 5.20.1 bug list or a version-specific repair.
Can my Kindle model get version 5.20.1?
Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page lists 5.20.1 for selected Scribe models, Kindle Colorsoft (1st Generation), Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation, 2024 Release), and Kindle (11th Generation, 2024 Release). Other Kindle models have different versions listed. Do not install a file intended for another model.

Find your Kindle’s model and generation, then compare it with the model names on Amazon’s live update page before downloading anything. A Kindle that is not listed for 5.20.1 should use the version Amazon lists for that model.
Amazon normally sends software updates automatically when a Kindle is connected to Wi-Fi. Its manual installation instructions are for cases where the latest software does not download automatically.

Why won’t my Kindle download update 5.20.1?
A failed download can be a network connection problem rather than a firmware defect. Amazon recommends checking the Kindle’s wireless settings and network before moving on to a manual update.
- On the Kindle, confirm Airplane mode is off and connect to Wi-Fi. Check that the network credentials are correct.
- Move closer to the router and try again.
- Restart the Kindle. If needed, restart the router and other network equipment as well.
- Try connecting the Kindle to a phone hotspot. Amazon says that if the hotspot works, the problem is with the original network.
- Check Amazon’s update page again to confirm the version you expect is listed for your model.
Wi-Fi compatibility can matter, especially on older Kindles. Amazon says Kindle devices do not support 6 GHz Wi-Fi; devices released before 2021 also do not support 5 GHz or WPA3 encryption. If your router uses one of those settings, try a supported network or hotspot.

- On a computer, open Amazon’s Kindle software update page and find the download for your exact model.
- Download that update file to the computer.
- Connect the Kindle to the computer with its charging cable.
- Transfer the downloaded file to the Kindle drive.
- Safely eject the Kindle from the computer and disconnect the cable.
- On the Kindle, open Settings > Update Your Kindle and confirm the update.
The Kindle should restart after installation. Amazon recommends keeping it charged and leaving it plugged in overnight so books have time to index. The computer-transfer procedure requires a computer and a cable that connects to the reader; Amazon’s instructions do not specify a connector type.

What if the Kindle freezes or runs slowly after updating?
Amazon’s general restart guidance says restarting can help with intermittent problems such as a frozen screen or slow performance. It is a general troubleshooting step, not a confirmed fix for a 5.20.1-specific bug.
- Press and hold the power button for 40 seconds.
- Release the button and allow the Kindle to restart.

Are there confirmed Kindle 5.20.1 bugs?
Amazon’s official update information describes software releases in general terms such as performance improvements, bug fixes, and enhancements. The official pages reviewed do not establish a confirmed list of 5.20.1-specific bugs or a reproducible fix for one.
A Kindle-focused blog reported on October 6, 2026, that some devices appeared to show a newer-looking 5.20.1.0.1 build and that official release-note pages did not consistently display the same latest-version information. That is secondary reporting, not confirmation from Amazon that 5.20.1 has an update defect. For eligibility and the current version, rely on the Amazon listing for your exact model. Individual user reports should be treated as anecdotal unless independently verified.
When should I contact Kindle Support?
If the update still will not download or install after these steps, contact Amazon Kindle Support. Include your exact Kindle model and generation, the installed software version, the full error message, and the troubleshooting steps you have already tried. Amazon’s reviewed instructions do not document a rollback or downgrade procedure.
