Choose the Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation, 2024 release) if your books and reading routines are already tied to Amazon’s Kindle ecosystem and you want a monochrome reader. Choose the Kobo Libra Colour if you want a colour e-ink screen, physical page-turn buttons, optional stylus annotation, or direct library borrowing where Kobo’s OverDrive integration works. The Libra Colour is the specific Kobo Libra model compared here; these recommendations depend on what you read and how you get your books, not on one device being universally better.
At a glance: which one fits your reading habits?
| Your priority | Better fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Keep using Kindle purchases, subscriptions, or familiar Amazon reading routines | Kindle Paperwhite | Staying with the ecosystem you already use is the lower-friction choice. The available product information does not provide a complete guide to transferring or accessing every Kindle title or service on Kobo. |
| See colour covers, illustrations, or colour annotations | Kobo Libra Colour | Kobo documents a 7-inch colour E Ink Kaleido 3 screen and colour annotation. A page designed in black and white remains monochrome. |
| Turn pages with physical buttons | Kobo Libra Colour | Kobo lists page-turn buttons on the Libra Colour. |
| Handwrite notes in eBooks | Kobo Libra Colour, if you want stylus annotation | It is compatible with Kobo Stylus 2, sold separately. This is not a comparison of full-featured note-taking tablets. |
| Borrow eBooks from a local library on the reader | Kobo Libra Colour, where supported | OverDrive is available only in select countries, and eBook availability depends on the library’s catalogue and location. |
| Compare storage and water resistance | Both have documented capabilities | Amazon lists 16 GB and waterproofing for the 2024 Paperwhite. Kobo lists 32 GB and IPX8 protection for the Libra Colour, rated for up to 60 minutes in 2 meters of water. These vendor specifications do not establish a complete real-world head-to-head comparison. |
How the screens differ
Paperwhite: a conventional monochrome Kindle
Amazon’s October 16, 2024 announcement describes its new Paperwhite as a monochrome Kindle. It is the straightforward choice if colour is not important to your reading and you would rather stay with the Kindle ecosystem.

Libra Colour: colour for covers, illustrations, and markup
Kobo describes the Libra Colour as having a 7-inch colour E Ink Kaleido 3 screen. Colour can be useful for book covers, illustrated material, comics, and notes you mark up in colour. It does not turn a black-and-white book page into a colour one: Kobo’s colour-screen guidance explains that the display cannot add colour to a page designed in black and white.

Buttons and handwritten annotation
The Libra Colour has physical page-turn buttons, which give readers a button-based alternative to tapping or swiping the screen. It is also compatible with Kobo Stylus 2 for annotation. Kobo states that the stylus is sold separately, so check the package contents in your region rather than assuming it comes with the e-reader.

Library borrowing and file formats
OverDrive depends on your country and library
Kobo’s product page describes borrowing eBooks directly from a local library through OverDrive and Libby integration, but that option is not universal. Kobo says OverDrive is available only in select countries, and eBook availability varies by library location. Before choosing the Libra Colour for library use, check both whether the service is supported in your country and whether your library offers the titles you want.
Kobo lists support for several common formats
Kobo’s factsheet lists EPUB, EPUB3, PDF, FlePub, and MOBI among the Libra Colour’s eBook formats, along with image, text, and comic formats. Its official product page says the reader supports 15 file formats natively. Format support alone does not establish that every book or service from another ecosystem will transfer or work; check access to your existing content before switching from Kindle.

Storage, water resistance, and price context
The manufacturer specifications show 16 GB of storage and waterproofing for the Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation, 2024 release), according to Amazon’s 2024 announcement. Rakuten Kobo’s factsheet lists 32 GB for the Libra Colour and IPX8 protection for up to 60 minutes in 2 meters of water. These are vendor-published specifications; they do not establish a comparative battery-life result or a tested advantage in everyday use.

Which e-reader should you buy?
Choose the Kindle Paperwhite if you are already a Kindle reader
If your purchases, subscriptions, or habits are centered on Kindle, the Paperwhite is the lower-friction default. The available product information does not establish a complete Kindle-to-Kobo transfer or service-compatibility matrix, so do not assume your existing library will work the same way after switching.
Choose the Kobo Libra Colour if its specific features matter to you
The Libra Colour is the better-supported fit if you want colour e-ink, page-turn buttons, stylus annotation, or library borrowing through OverDrive in a supported country with a participating local catalogue. Factor in the separately sold stylus if handwriting notes is part of your plan.

Check before you switch ecosystems
- List the books and services you rely on, then confirm they are accessible on the device you are considering.
- If colour is the reason to choose Kobo, consider whether you read colour illustrations or annotate pages; ordinary black-and-white text pages remain monochrome.
- If library borrowing is important, verify OverDrive support in your country and check your own library’s catalogue.
- If you want handwritten annotations, account for Kobo Stylus 2 being sold separately.
- Compare current local prices and package contents rather than treating an undated MSRP as today’s price.
