How to check your Kindle Fire OS version

Open Settings on the tablet.

On newer Fire tablets, select Device Options, then About Fire Tablet. Amazon’s model-identification instructions describe this area for finding device details; wording can differ on older models.

Look for a field called Fire OS version, Software version, or System Version. The exact label is not consistent across generations. Amazon’s original Kindle Fire user guide says the Device settings page displays the system version for that older interface.

If those labels are not visible, inspect the device-information screens in Settings and note the model and software details shown there. The model identifies the tablet; the software-version field tells you what it is currently running.

Why the model name does not tell you the installed version
“Kindle Fire” covers many generations, and their software differs. Amazon’s Fire tablet specifications and software update listings include examples spanning Fire OS 2, 4, 5, and 8. There is no single Fire OS version for every Kindle Fire or Fire tablet.
Use the version shown on your tablet when troubleshooting an app or checking compatibility. If you are comparing it with a newer release, first confirm the exact model and generation, then consult the matching entry in Amazon’s update information. A model’s listed software does not establish the version installed on your particular device.

How to compare your version with an update
Amazon’s update listing is model-specific. At the time reflected by its current listing accessed in 2026, it shows Fire OS 8 version 8.3.3.7 for the Fire HD 10 (13th generation), Fire Max 11 (13th generation), Fire HD 8 (12th generation), and Fire 7 (12th generation). This is a dated listing, not a permanent version guarantee; check the current update page for your exact model.
Do not assume an older tablet can install the newest Fire OS generation. Amazon’s specifications and update entries distinguish support by model, so compare the full model and generation—not just the screen size or the broad “Fire” name.

Automatic updates and manual installation
Fire tablets automatically download software updates when connected to the internet, according to Amazon’s software update guidance. Checking the version is separate from installing an update: the version screen reports what is on the tablet, while the update page helps determine what Amazon lists for that model.
If you need to install an update manually, identify the exact tablet model first and follow Amazon’s model-specific instructions. Do not select a download based only on an approximate device name or screen size.
Does the tablet still receive security updates?
Amazon’s Fire Tablet Device Software Security Updates policy says support lasts until at least four years after purchase new from Amazon as the seller on Amazon.com, or until a later date stated on the policy page. Amazon may provide updates beyond that period, subject to technical and other limitations. The stated period is qualified by the seller, marketplace, and purchase circumstances; check Amazon’s current policy and your device details for applicability.
