The practical first step is to install Amazon’s current Kindle desktop app; Amazon lists Windows 11 as supported. That change is the right fix for an unsupported legacy installation, but Amazon’s guidance does not establish that it will resolve every launch problem with the current app.
1. Check whether you have the unsupported Legacy Kindle app
Amazon identifies the former Kindle for PC software as the “Legacy Kindle app” and says it is no longer supported as of June 30, 2026. If that is the app on your PC, move to Amazon’s current desktop app rather than trying to make the legacy version work. Amazon’s desktop installation guidance lists Windows 11 as a supported operating system.

2. Install the current Kindle desktop app
- Open Amazon’s Kindle desktop installation page.
- Follow its link to the Kindle Apps page, choose the download for your device, and follow Amazon’s installation instructions.
- After installation, open the current Kindle app and sign in with the Amazon account associated with your Kindle books.
Amazon lists Windows 11 as supported for the current desktop app, but its published guidance does not specify why an individual installation may fail to launch or provide a Windows-specific repair sequence.

3. If the current app still will not open
Amazon’s available desktop guidance does not establish a cause for a launch failure in the current Windows app or document app-specific steps such as clearing a cache, resetting the app, changing compatibility settings, or altering security software. Those actions should not be presented as an Amazon-approved fix. If installation of the current app has not resolved the issue, use Amazon’s support route for account- and app-specific help rather than assuming a particular Windows setting is responsible.

4. Use sign-out only if you understand the consequence
Amazon documents signing out as a troubleshooting option, but warns that signing out deletes downloaded content and deregisters the device from the Windows app. Do not sign out casually, particularly if you rely on books downloaded for offline reading. If you do sign out, expect to set the app up again and download needed content again.
5. Keep reading while the Windows app is unavailable
Kindle sync can preserve reading position, notes, and highlights and make them available across linked Kindle apps and devices. You can continue on another linked Kindle app or device and use sync for continuity. Amazon also links Kindle for Web from its desktop support page for unsupported operating systems; that does not mean it is a documented repair for a launch failure on a supported Windows 11 PC.

A Kindle e-reader is not required to install or troubleshoot the Windows app. It is simply one possible alternate reading endpoint if you already use one.
