Kids’ Smartphone vs. GPS Watch: Which Is Better for Staying in Touch?

A GPS watch can keep communication focused on trusted contacts; a smartphone offers broader access but requires more parental setup. Compare needs, controls, compatibility, and privacy.

For a child who mainly needs to reach trusted people and share their location, a GPS watch is often the simpler first device. A smartphone is a better fit when the child has a real need for broader apps and communication—and an adult is ready to configure and maintain the controls. Neither option is right for every family: check the child’s readiness, the caregiver’s device, local carrier support, and your comfort with location and app privacy.

What each device lets a child do

A GPS watch can offer calls or messages to a managed circle and location features without giving a child a conventional smartphone. For example, Apple says Apple Watch For Your Kids supports calls, messages, approved contacts, and location sharing when set up with a parent’s iPhone and a GPS + Cellular Apple Watch. Gabb lists calling, messaging, GPS, safe zones, and parent-managed contacts for its Watch 3e. These are descriptions of specific products; features and limits vary across models.

A smartphone offers broader app and communication options. That flexibility also means more decisions about contacts, chats, content, purchases, privacy settings, and screen time. The Federal Trade Commission’s advice on setting up a child’s first phone applies to connected watches, too.

Compare the practical trade-offs

Consideration Smartphone GPS watch
Communication Broader app and communication choices; check contact, chat, content, and purchase controls. FTC guidance Often centered on calls or messages to managed contacts; confirm what the specific model supports. Apple Watch For Your Kids and Gabb Watch 3e are examples.
Apps and distraction More app and content choices for adults to configure and revisit. The FTC recommends screen-time and content controls. FTC guidance May offer a more limited experience, but verify available apps and contacts on the chosen model. Gabb Watch 3e
Location Review device and app permissions, and decide who can see the child’s location. FTC guidance The cited Apple and Gabb examples advertise location features; accuracy, update timing, and service terms depend on the model. Apple; Gabb
Setup and compatibility Depends on the phone’s operating system and the parental controls you choose. Family-control tools include Apple Family Sharing, Google Family Link, and Microsoft Family Safety. FTC guidance Requirements differ by product. Apple’s setup needs a parent iPhone, a GPS + Cellular watch, and eligible carrier service; verify current local eligibility. Apple
Privacy Review handset settings and the data practices of each app the child uses. FTC guidance Review the companion app and service privacy notices as well. A connected watch can handle sensitive location and contact data. FTC COPPA guidance

When a GPS watch makes more sense

  • The immediate need is reachability and location, rather than general-purpose internet access.
  • The child is not ready for the wider range of apps and content on a smartphone.
  • The watch’s contact list, communication features, setup requirements, and service arrangement fit the family.

Check the actual model rather than assuming every kids’ watch works the same way. Gabb, for instance, says its Watch 3e location updates approximately every 15 minutes; that is the manufacturer’s claim for that product, not a category-wide standard or an independent test. Gabb Watch 3e

When a smartphone makes more sense

  • The child has a concrete need for broader apps or communication.
  • A caregiver can set up and revisit controls for screen time, content, contacts and chats, app downloads and purchases, and location sharing.
  • The phone and family-control tools work with the devices and accounts the family already uses.

For a starting checklist, the FTC recommends reviewing privacy and security settings, screen-time limits, app downloads and purchases, content filters, contact and chat settings, and available family-monitoring tools. FTC guidance

Set a clear rule for location sharing

Agree on who can see the child’s location, which apps may access it, and when a caregiver will check. The FTC advises limiting location access and discussing when sharing is appropriate; children should not broadcast their location broadly or continuously. A map is one communication aid, not a guarantee of safety. FTC guidance

Understand the privacy and COPPA context

A watch is not automatically more private than a phone. Apps and connected services can collect personal information, so examine the privacy notices and data practices for the specific device and service.

The FTC says COPPA covers operators of commercial websites and online services—including mobile apps and IoT devices—directed to children under 13 that collect, use, or disclose personal information. It can also cover some general-audience services with actual knowledge that they are collecting information from children under 13. For covered operators, FTC guidance describes duties such as providing a privacy policy and direct notice to parents, obtaining verifiable parental consent with limited exceptions, and providing parental access or deletion rights. Those legal duties are not a privacy certification for a particular vendor. The FTC describes COPPA’s purpose this way: “The primary goal of COPPA is to place parents in control over what information is collected from their young children online.” FTC COPPA guidance
