The Keychron M5 is a right-handed vertical wireless mouse with three connection options, two scroll wheels, and two configurations that differ in their sensors and polling limits. The 8K version has higher specifications; the 1K version is the lower-spec option. Whether either is a good buy depends most on whether its 47-degree shape and grip feel right in your hand.

What is the Keychron M5?

The M5 is a vertical mouse designed to hold the hand at a manufacturer-specified 47-degree angle, in a handshake-like position. It is right-handed and weighs 95 g according to Keychron. A main scroll wheel handles vertical scrolling; a thumb wheel is provided for horizontal scrolling. The mouse supports Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz wireless, and USB wired operation. Keychron says Bluetooth can switch among three devices. Keychron’s product page is the primary source for these specifications.

Those features make the M5 adaptable to a desk setup with multiple devices, but its defining feature is the shape. A vertical mouse can feel unfamiliar if you are used to a conventional, low-profile mouse, and a comfortable fit depends on your hand and grip.

Keychron M5 1K vs. 8K: what changes?

The labels identify distinct hardware configurations, not just different polling settings. Keychron specifies a different sensor and maximum DPI for each, as well as different battery-life claims.

Specification Keychron M5 1K Keychron M5 8K
Sensor PixArt 3311 (Keychron specification) PixArt 3950 (Keychron specification)
Maximum polling rate Up to 1,000 Hz (Keychron specification) Up to 8,000 Hz (Keychron specification)
Maximum DPI Up to 12,000 (Keychron specification) Up to 30,000 (Keychron specification)
Bluetooth battery claim Up to 100 hours (Keychron claim) Up to 140 hours (Keychron claim)
2.4 GHz battery claim Not stated in the cited Keychron product specifications Up to 40 hours at 8K polling; up to 120 hours at 1K polling (Keychron claims)

These are manufacturer specifications and battery-life claims, not independent measurements. The figures are maximum claims tied to the stated version, connection, and, for the 8K model, polling rate; they should not be read as typical-use guarantees. Higher DPI and polling ceilings are not automatically useful for every user. Choose the 8K model if those capabilities matter to your setup; the 1K model has a lower ceiling and different internals.

Is the Keychron M5 comfortable?

Keychron presents the 47-degree angle as an ergonomic design intended to put the hand in a handshake-like posture. That description explains the shape, not a guarantee of comfort or a medical benefit. Hand size, grip, desk position, and personal preference all affect how a vertical mouse feels. Neither the shape nor manufacturer claims establish that the M5 will relieve wrist pain or prevent repetitive strain injuries.

If possible, try the mouse before buying. Pay attention to whether you can reach the buttons and thumb wheel without stretching, whether the mouse feels stable in your usual grip, and whether the angled position remains comfortable during a normal work session. Allow for an adjustment period when switching from a conventional mouse; the time needed varies by person.

Is the Keychron M5 good for gaming?

On paper, the 8K version’s PixArt 3950 sensor and polling rate of up to 8,000 Hz make it the higher-spec option. Independent gaming coverage has also considered the M5 as an ergonomic gaming mouse; see PC Gamer’s review. But sensor specifications and shell shape answer different questions: a high polling ceiling does not make a vertical mouse feel like a conventional gaming mouse.

The M5 may suit someone who wants a vertical shape for mixed work and play. If fast, precise movements are central to your games, consider whether the angled grip feels natural to you before choosing it. A conventional gaming mouse may feel more familiar for that style of control.

What should you check before buying?

  • Configuration: Confirm whether the listing is for the 1K or 8K model; their sensors and maximum specifications differ.
  • Shape and fit: Check the right-handed layout, thumb reach, grip, and 47-degree angle. Try it if practical.
  • Click noise: Confirm whether the exact listing is silent or clicky. These are variant-level details, not a universal M5 characteristic.
  • Connections: The M5 supports Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz wireless, and USB wired use; the product page describes Bluetooth switching among three devices.
  • Battery expectations: Compare the claim for your exact configuration and connection mode rather than treating one figure as applying to every M5.
  • Price and stock: Check the live product listing for the precise variant, since price and availability can change.

What does the Keychron M5 cost?

At the time of the listing snapshot accessed in 2026, Keychron’s US variant listing showed $49.99 for one 1K silent configuration and $69.99 for an 8K clicky configuration; some variants were marked backordered. These are time- and configuration-specific listing prices, not a universal price range. Check Keychron’s current listing for the price and stock of the exact version you want.
