KeyChainino 144 is a pocket-sized arcade keychain with 17 preloaded games and a 12×12 grid of individual LEDs. You can play it as supplied or reprogram it with Arduino tools, but reflashing requires an ISP programmer; a USB cable alone is not enough. It uses a CR2032 coin cell, which the maker says is not included.
What the current KeyChainino includes
The current maker-listed model is KeyChainino 144. Its 4.8 × 2.5 × 1 cm body holds an ATmega328 microcontroller running at 8 MHz, two buttons, and a 12×12 charlieplexed LED matrix. That grid contains 144 individual LEDs; it is not an LCD or OLED display. The maker describes three brightness levels and grayscale, and says high scores are saved in EEPROM.

Seventeen games come preloaded, so the device can be used as a small arcade without any programming. The maker also describes automatic sleep and button-based wake-up.

How its LED display works
Instead of drawing pixels on a conventional screen, KeyChainino lights individual LEDs arranged in a 12×12 grid. The matrix is charlieplexed: the arrangement lets the controller address many LEDs using fewer pins than a direct one-pin-per-LED layout would require. The creator’s home page puts the distinction simply: “It’s not a screen — that’s the charm of it.”

That design gives the keychain its distinctive, low-resolution look. It is best understood as a tiny LED game board, not as a miniature version of a phone or handheld-console display.
What you need to reprogram it
The firmware is open source and compatible with Arduino IDE, but reprogramming involves an in-system programming (ISP) connection. The maker’s guide for V144 describes using an Arduino board such as an Uno as the ISP programmer, connecting through a six-pin header, and configuring the ATmega328 for an internal 8 MHz clock. It also directs users to install MiniCore and select Arduino as ISP. Remove the KeyChainino battery before uploading.

- Install Arduino IDE and the MiniCore board package, following the maker’s V144 programming guide.
- Configure the target as an ATmega328 with an internal 8 MHz clock, and select Arduino as ISP as the programmer.
- Connect the programmer to the KeyChainino’s six-pin header, then remove the coin cell before uploading.
- Use the maker’s game-development tutorial for the library setup and an introduction to writing a game.
This is a maker project with a defined programming path, not a plug-in-and-upload USB gadget. The separate ISP setup and header connection are important practical requirements if your interest is making games rather than simply playing the included ones.
Battery, runtime and purchase details
KeyChainino 144 uses one CR2032 coin cell, and the maker says the battery is not included. The product page claims “more than three months of normal daily use.” That is the maker’s runtime claim; no independent test conditions or results are provided with it.

When the maker’s product page was checked on October 7, 2026, it displayed a price of €27.00, reduced from €30.00, and said stock was limited. Price and availability can change, so those figures are a dated listing snapshot rather than a standing offer.
The maker says KeyChainino is designed and assembled in Italy in small batches. The current product listing, rather than older coverage of earlier KeyChainino versions, is the reference for the 144 model’s specifications.
