If your keyboard seems to type backwards, first check whether the text field is using right-to-left (RTL) paragraph direction or the wrong keyboard layout. Reversed letter order, a paragraph flowing from right to left, and unexpected characters are different symptoms; none alone proves the keyboard is broken.
First identify what “backwards” means
Look closely at the text and cursor. The distinction points to different settings:

- The whole paragraph flows from right to left: The paragraph or field may have RTL direction. That is a text-formatting behavior, not evidence that the physical keyboard is oriented or working incorrectly. macOS and Microsoft 365 support bidirectional text, including mixed left-to-right and right-to-left writing. Apple’s Mac guide and Microsoft’s Office guidance explain these behaviors.
- The cursor starts on the right or moves in an unexpected direction: In bidirectional text, cursor movement and reading order can differ from what you expect in a left-to-right paragraph.
- The letters in an English word appear in reverse sequence: Check the field or app’s direction first, then test the same text in another app. The available documentation establishes direction controls, but does not show that every report of reversed letters has the same cause.
- Keys produce different characters than expected: Check the active keyboard/input layout. A layout can differ from the Windows display language.
A Microsoft Q&A user described words in a reply or address field appearing “in reverse order.” That is a symptom report, not a diagnosis: the operating system, app, field and input language all matter. Read the user-submitted report.
Use this diagnostic sequence
- Compare the behavior in another app or field. Type a short test in a different text field. If the issue is limited to one document or app, inspect that paragraph’s or field’s direction before changing system settings. This is a diagnostic inference from the app- and paragraph-level direction controls documented by Apple and Microsoft.
- Check whether the characters are wrong or only the flow is unexpected. If the intended letters appear but the paragraph flows right to left, investigate text direction. If different characters appear, investigate the input layout.
- Confirm the active input layout. On Windows, open Settings > Time & language > Language & region and review the keyboard/input layout associated with the language. Select the intended layout. Windows supports adding and selecting alternate layouts independently of the display language; see Microsoft’s Windows language and keyboard-layout instructions.
- Set the paragraph direction explicitly in a supported Mac app. Use the app’s Format menu writing-direction command if available. Apple documents Control-Command-Right Arrow for left-to-right paragraph direction, Control-Command-Left Arrow for right-to-left, and Control-Command-Down Arrow for default direction. For selected text, the documented shortcuts are Control-Option-Command-Right Arrow, Control-Option-Command-Left Arrow and Control-Option-Command-Down Arrow, respectively. These shortcuts require the relevant input-source option to be enabled, and some apps do not provide the menu commands. See Apple’s instructions.
- In Microsoft 365, inspect paragraph direction and context. The first strong character can influence reading order when direction is contextual. For RTL composition, make sure the corresponding Windows input language is enabled. See Microsoft’s Office instructions.
Why text direction can change without a keyboard fault
macOS
macOS supports entering and editing left-to-right and right-to-left text in the same paragraph. Apple says the first character entered determines a paragraph’s default direction, while supported apps can provide explicit writing-direction controls. The direction shortcut may be unavailable unless its input-source option is enabled. Apple documents the controls and their limits.

Windows and Microsoft 365
Microsoft 365 supports RTL composition and mixed-direction text. With contextual direction, a paragraph’s first strong character can affect its reading order. Separately, Windows lets you use a keyboard layout associated with a language other than the current display language. Check both the paragraph direction in the app and the active input layout if the symptom is unclear. Microsoft 365 direction guidance and Windows layout guidance cover these separate settings.

A paragraph flowing right to left is not, by itself, evidence of hardware failure. If incorrect characters appear in multiple apps even after you confirm the intended input layout, the problem needs device- and operating-system-specific diagnosis. The sources cited here do not establish a general hardware fix for that case, so replacing the keyboard is not a justified first step.
