Changing a theme alone does not remap what the keys enter. A layout can change the characters or symbols produced, and may be tied to a language.
What a keyboard theme changes
A theme controls visual styling, such as the keyboard’s colors or background image. Google describes Gboard themes as a way to change how the keyboard looks; its Android settings let you select and apply a theme. Google’s Gboard theme instructions show the option in the keyboard’s menu.

A theme does not, by itself, change the input mapping. If the keyboard’s keys are in the right places and type the expected characters but you want a different color or background, a theme is the relevant setting.

What a keyboard layout changes
A layout determines the arrangement used for input: where letters or symbols appear and, depending on the keyboard, what a key produces. It may be associated with a language, but “layout” does not mean only a country-specific letter arrangement. Samsung, for example, documents Korean formats such as QWERTY and Cheonjiin, alongside English formats such as QWERTY, QWERTZ, and AZERTY; available formats vary by device operating system. On Gboard, adding a language involves choosing one of the layouts available for it. Changing the typing language in Gboard does not change the Android device’s language setting, as Google’s language instructions explain.
Layouts matter especially when the keyboard’s printed or on-screen key positions do not produce the characters you expect. On iPhone, Apple lets users assign an alternative layout to a language keyboard and notes that it may not match the markings on a physical keyboard. See Apple’s iPhone keyboard guide.

Theme or layout: which setting should you change?

Keyboard apps can put these controls near each other without making them the same setting. Samsung lists language, layout, themes, size, feedback, and custom symbols as distinct keyboard settings. Its Galaxy keyboard settings guide illustrates that distinction.
How to find the right option
- To change appearance in Gboard for Android: Open an app where you can type, bring up Gboard, open the keyboard menu, select Theme, choose an option, and apply it. The exact menu can vary by version.
- To change language or key arrangement in Gboard: Open the keyboard’s language settings, add or select a language, then choose an available layout for it. The choices depend on the selected language.
- To use a different iPhone layout: Add or change keyboards in iPhone keyboard settings, then assign an alternative layout to the relevant language keyboard if one is available.
- If the keyboard only looks too large or compact: Check for a separate size or mode control rather than changing its theme or input layout.
These are examples, not universal menu paths. The options and labels depend on the keyboard app, language, device, and operating-system version. A software layout can also differ from the labels printed on an attached physical keyboard.
