There is no universal speed winner. A visible toolbar button can be quickest for an easy-to-reach command; a keyboard shortcut can become more efficient after you learn it and use it often. Gesture results depend on what “gesture” means: practiced drawn strokes performed well in one command task, while free-space Kinect gestures struggled with precise target selection in another.
What counts as a mouse gesture?
“Mouse gestures” can describe different input methods, and their results should not be treated as interchangeable:

- Toolbar or menu selection: moving a pointer to a visible control or navigating a menu. These are mouse actions, but not necessarily gestures.
- Stroke gesture: drawing a learned shape or direction with a mouse to invoke a command.
- Touchpad gesture: swiping or tapping on a touch-sensitive surface.
- Free-space gesture: moving a hand or body in front of a sensor, such as a Kinect, to control an interface.
Each has different demands: locating a target, remembering a command, making a recognizable stroke, or being tracked accurately by a sensor.

| Study and task | Finding | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Omanson, Miller, Young and Schwantes, 2010: mouse menu selection, keyboard shortcuts and toolbar selection over 90 trials | Toolbar-mouse selection was fastest overall; menu-keyboard showed the most improvement. The authors say shortcuts can be as efficient as toolbars in heavily used interfaces. Study record | The result separates a direct visible target from menu navigation and memorized commands. The abstract does not give exact completion times, so it cannot support a specific time-saving estimate. |
| 2015 study of menu selection versus preassigned key combinations | The reported performance crossover occurred after approximately 200 responses in that experiment. After training, all but one person in the shortcut-trained group chose to keep using shortcuts. PubMed record | About 200 responses is an experiment-specific result, not a universal learning threshold for shortcuts. |
| Appert and Zhai stroke-gesture experiment, as recounted in a 2012 chapter | For the tested command task, stroke gestures were significantly faster and had fewer errors than keyboard shortcuts, particularly with moderate practice. At least one error occurred in 19% of gesture trials and 22% of keyboard trials. Chapter record | These error figures describe trials in a particular setup and should not be treated as general error rates for either method. |
| Sambrooks and Wilkinson, 2013: 15 participants selected 100 targets with each tested technique | Kinect-based gestures produced three times as many miss-selections as mouse and touch. The report attributed the result to participant unfamiliarity and sensor inaccuracy; touch was comparable to mouse overall but had trouble with smaller targets. Paper record | This was a preliminary test of free-space gestural target selection, not a verdict on learned mouse strokes or all gesture interfaces. |
Which method is likely to suit a common task?
Choosing a visible command
For a command with a clear, nearby toolbar button, clicking may be quickest because the target is visible and requires no shortcut recall. The 2010 comparison found toolbar selection fastest overall in its tested conditions, but it does not establish that every toolbar is faster than every shortcut.
Repeating a command often
A shortcut is worth learning when you use the same command repeatedly and can recall its key combination without searching. It may take longer at first; the crossover study shows that practice can change the comparison, but its response count should not be used as a promise about how quickly any particular person or application will improve.

Invoking commands with a learned stroke
A drawn gesture may be efficient when a specific application supports it and the movement is easy to perform reliably. The stroke-gesture result is encouraging for its tested command task, but does not establish that a gesture will be faster for text editing, menu navigation or target selection.

Selecting small or precise targets
For precise pointing, target size and the input method matter. In the Kinect experiment, free-space gestures missed more targets than mouse and touch; touch also had difficulty with smaller targets. Do not apply those findings to a different sensor or gesture technique without comparable evidence.

How to compare methods in your own workflow
For a practical comparison, pick three actions you perform frequently and measure both completion time and mistakes. This is a suggested personal test, not a published benchmark.
- Choose three repeated actions, such as opening a panel, applying a formatting command or switching views.
- For each action, compare your current method with one alternative available in the same application.
- Try each method repeatedly under similar conditions. Include enough repetitions to notice whether recall or accuracy changes with practice.
- Record elapsed time and errors, including missed targets, wrong commands and corrections.
- Use the method that works best for that action in your real workflow; check the application’s current help for its supported shortcuts and gestures.
A method that wins on a single attempt may lose in practice if it causes mistakes or requires correction. Time and accuracy belong in the same comparison.

Keep a keyboard route available
Speed is not the only design consideration. W3C guidance for WCAG Success Criterion 2.1.1 says functionality must be operable through a keyboard interface, except where the function’s underlying purpose depends on a movement path. It identifies functionality available only through pointing-device-specific handlers, including gestures, as a failure example. The guidance does not discourage offering mouse input alongside keyboard operation. W3C: Understanding Keyboard
Microsoft’s Windows guidance likewise says, “Don’t make a shortcut key the only way to perform a task.” It recommends reserving shortcuts for common commands, documenting them and avoiding conflicting assignments. These are design recommendations, not proof that shortcuts are faster for every user. Microsoft Learn: Keyboard – Win32 apps and Microsoft Learn: Keyboard interactions – Windows apps

Why there is no single speed ranking
The studies differ in task, gesture type, practice and interface. A toolbar click, a memorized key combination, a learned mouse stroke and an in-air sensor gesture are not equivalent actions. The literature cited here includes older desktop studies, a chapter account of a stroke-gesture experiment and a small preliminary Kinect experiment; it does not establish how every current application performs across representative everyday tasks. The useful conclusion is narrower: match the method to the task, learn shortcuts for commands you repeat, and judge speed alongside mistakes.
