Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe right keyboard setting depends on what is getting in your way: Sticky Keys lets you press modifier combinations one key at a time; input-filtering features change which keystrokes are accepted; and keyboard-navigation or on-screen-keyboard tools help you use a computer without relying on a mouse or physical keyboard. These built-in options are available in Windows, macOS and ChromeOS, though their names and controls differ. They change how input works; they do not guarantee that every user will work faster.
Choose the setting for the problem you want to solve
| What you need | Setting to try | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Press a shortcut without holding multiple keys together | Sticky Keys on Windows, macOS or ChromeOS | Lets you enter a modifier combination sequentially. |
| Stop brief or repeated presses from registering as unwanted input | Filter Keys on Windows; Slow Keys on macOS | Changes how keystrokes are accepted and can affect ordinary typing. |
| Hear when a lock key is pressed | Toggle Keys on Windows | Plays a sound when Caps Lock, Num Lock or Scroll Lock is pressed. |
| Navigate or control the computer from the keyboard | Full Keyboard Access on macOS | Enables keyboard navigation and control, with a command list and shortcut customization. |
| Type without a physical keyboard | On-Screen Keyboard on Windows; Accessibility Keyboard on macOS | Displays a keyboard on screen for typing and interaction. |
Try one setting that matches your specific difficulty, then check whether normal typing and shortcuts still behave as expected. If the change is uncomfortable, return to the same settings area and adjust or turn it off.
How do I press keyboard shortcuts one key at a time?
Windows 10 and Windows 11: Sticky Keys
Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and turn on Sticky Keys. You can also press Windows logo key + U to open Accessibility settings. Sticky Keys lets you enter a multi-key command such as Ctrl+S by pressing its keys in sequence rather than holding them together.
Microsoft documents Shift pressed five times as a Sticky Keys toggle. If a key sequence seems to have switched the feature on unexpectedly, use the Settings path to inspect its state.

Open Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard, then enable Sticky Keys. It allows modifier keys to be pressed sequentially. macOS can also show pressed modifiers on screen or play a beep, depending on the options you choose. Apple documents these controls in its macOS 26 guide.
ChromeOS: Sticky keys
Open Accessibility settings and look under Keyboard and text input for Sticky keys. Google says the feature allows shortcut keys to be entered sequentially. Labels and availability can vary by device or ChromeOS version; Google’s Chromebook accessibility guide describes the feature and related options.
How do I make unwanted brief or repeated keystrokes less likely?
Windows: Filter Keys
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and configure Filter Keys. Microsoft describes it as a way to adjust keyboard sensitivity so brief or repeated keystrokes can be ignored. This changes accepted input, not shortcut assignments, so check how it feels with ordinary typing as well as the keys that were causing trouble.

Holding Right Shift for eight seconds is a documented Filter Keys toggle. If it activates unexpectedly, inspect the feature in Settings.
macOS: Slow Keys
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and adjust Slow Keys. It adds a delay before a pressed key is accepted. Because that delay affects input, it may also change the feel of everyday typing.

Holding Num Lock for five seconds is another documented toggle; if you hear or notice an unexpected change, check the setting in that same location. Microsoft lists Toggle Keys and the other Windows keyboard accessibility controls in its Windows 10 and Windows 11 accessibility guidance and accessibility shortcut guidance.
