If your Chromebook keyboard isn’t typing, it’s usually fixable without taking the device in. The fastest path is to separate software/input issues from hardware issues, then try a sequence of targeted fixes.
This guide focuses on Chromebook keyboards specifically (including built-in keyboards and detachable/2-in-1 models) and provides 8 tested fixes that you can run in under an hour. Each fix includes exact steps for ChromeOS.

Why a Chromebook keyboard can stop working
On ChromeOS, keyboard problems usually come from one of four buckets: keyboard input is disabled, the input method/language mapping is wrong, accessibility features are interfering, or the keyboard/hardware is failing (or blocked by liquid/dust).

Before you start: prerequisites and quick checks
Do these checks first to avoid wasting time and to make later fixes easier.
Confirm the problem scope
- Does no key work, or just some keys?
- Does the keyboard work in the Chromebook login screen, or only after you sign in?
- Does it fail in every app (Google Docs, browser address bar), or only one?
- If you have an external keyboard, does that work?
Power + charging check
Plug the Chromebook into power for at least 15 minutes if possible. Low battery can cause unstable input behavior on some models.
Try a “known-good” input field
Open Settings > About ChromeOS, then click the search field (or any text field) and test keys there. This helps rule out app-specific issues.
8 Tested Fixes (2024)
Work through these in order. If you find a fix that restores typing, stop there.
1) Remove external devices and wake the keyboard
External devices (Bluetooth keyboards, game controllers, docks, USB hubs) can sometimes steal focus or interfere with input routing. Also, sleeping or lid-closed states can leave the keyboard unresponsive until you fully wake the device.

- Simple Wired USB Connection,You will enjoy a comfortable and quiet typing experience
- The keyboard for business and office working is the budget-friendly keyboard that is built for longer use
- Low profile keys for a more comfortable and quiet keystroke, desktop-centric design, splash resistant
- Unplug any USB devices and remove any connected accessories.
- Turn off Bluetooth: click clock in the bottom-right > Bluetooth toggle.
- Wake the Chromebook: open the lid or press Power once to wake.
- Log in and test the keyboard in a text field.
2) Check Chromebook hardware keyboard mode and tablet/fold state
Many 2-in-1 Chromebooks switch keyboard behavior when in tablet mode or when the display is folded. If you’re using one of these models, the keyboard may be disabled or limited depending on hinge state.
- Close the lid, wait 10 seconds, then open it fully.
- If your device has a detachable keyboard, re-seat the keyboard.
- Test again in normal laptop posture (not tent/tablet mode).
3) Restart the Chromebook the right way
A simple reboot fixes a surprising number of keyboard/input glitches because ChromeOS reloads input drivers and focus state.

- Press and hold Power until the screen goes black (about 10 seconds).
- Wait 10 more seconds.
- Press Power again to turn it on.
- After login, test several keys, including letters, numbers, spacebar, and Enter.
4) Toggle keyboard language and input methods
If your keyboard layout is mismatched (for example, switching between US and UK, or enabling a different input method), you may think the keyboard is broken because the wrong characters appear.
- Click the status area (bottom-right clock).
- Click the Current keyboard/input indicator (often shows a language like ENG).
- Select a common layout such as English (United States).
- Open a text box and test typing.
If you can type but characters are wrong, this is the fix you want. If keys are dead, move on.
5) Disable accessibility keyboard features (Sticky Keys, etc.)
Accessibility settings can change how typing works, including modifier keys like Ctrl/Alt/Shift and repeat behavior. Temporarily turning them off is quick.

- Open Settings.
- Go to Accessibility.
- Look for Keyboard or typing-related options and turn off anything enabled (examples include Sticky Keys-style behavior).
- Sign out and back in if the change doesn’t apply immediately.
Also check that you didn’t accidentally turn on a screen keyboard mode that conflicts with physical input.

6) Re-register the keyboard with ChromeOS (powerwash-free reset steps)
If the keyboard subsystem or input mapping got stuck, you can often recover without a full Powerwash. These steps force ChromeOS to reload input settings.
- Try a different ChromeOS user account: click your profile in the sign-in screen and test there (or add a guest session).
- Disable extensions temporarily: if you can type enough to open Chrome, go to chrome://extensions and toggle off extensions one at a time.
- Restart again after disabling extensions.
If the keyboard works in a new user but not your primary profile, the issue is likely configuration-related, not a failing keyboard.
7) Update ChromeOS and installed apps
Keyboard and input fixes ship with ChromeOS updates. If your device is on an older patch level, updating can resolve known bugs affecting key scanning, remapping, or HID handling.
- Open Settings.
- Go to About ChromeOS.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the update and click Restart.
Even small updates can matter, so if an update is available, take it.

8) Use an on-screen keyboard and run a hardware test (and plan next steps)
If none of the software fixes help, you need to check whether the keyboard hardware itself is failing or disconnected. Use an on-screen keyboard to keep moving while you test.
- Open accessibility keyboard: press Search + Esc to open accessibility shortcuts (varies by model), or go to Settings > Accessibility and enable On-screen keyboard.
- Use the on-screen keyboard to navigate to Settings > About ChromeOS and note your ChromeOS version.
- Back up important files if needed (Google Drive sync, etc.).
- If you can, run any available built-in diagnostics for your Chromebook model (many models show keyboard/hardware test options through the device diagnostics tools).
If the on-screen keyboard works but the physical keyboard doesn’t, it strongly points to a hardware issue: a failing keyboard matrix, ribbon cable, or internal sensor damage.
Common failure modes and what to try next
Keyboard issues rarely behave randomly. Here are frequent patterns and the most likely remedies.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try first |
|---|---|---|
| Entire keyboard dead after login | Input remapping/accessibility conflict or a profile issue | Fix #3 restart, then Fix #5 accessibility, then test a new user |
| Only number row or specific keys fail | Hardware scanning issue or keycap damage | Test in login screen (if possible), then Fix #8 diagnostics |
| Keyboard works at first, then stops | Bluetooth/external interference or sleep/wake glitch | Fix #1 external devices, then Fix #3 proper restart |
| Wrong characters appear for the same keys | Keyboard layout/input method mismatch | Fix #4 toggle language/input method |
| Keyboard works in some apps but not others | App-specific shortcut handling | Disable extensions (Fix #6) and test in Chrome and Docs |
When to suspect the keyboard is physically damaged
Physical damage is the most likely when multiple keys are affected, the problem started after liquid exposure, or the keyboard fails in the login screen as well as in the OS.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a Chromebook without the physical keyboard?
Yes. Enable the on-screen keyboard from Settings > Accessibility. If you have a working USB or Bluetooth keyboard, you can also keep working while you troubleshoot.
Why does my Chromebook keyboard type the wrong letters?
That’s almost always a layout/input method mismatch. Check the input language in the bottom-right status area and switch to your expected layout (commonly English (United States)).
Does a restart fix keyboard issues on Chromebooks?
Often, yes. A full power restart forces ChromeOS to reload input handling and clears stuck states after sleep/wake or background driver hangs.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I Powerwash my Chromebook?
Only after you’ve tried user testing and the common software fixes. If the keyboard fails even in a new profile and you’ve confirmed updates are current, Powerwash usually won’t help.
If I can type in the browser but not in Google Docs, what’s wrong?
Docs may be affected by an extension, browser setting, or a shortcut conflict. Try disabling extensions (or use an incognito window) and test again.
Bottom Line
If your Chromebook keyboard stops working, start with the quick eliminations: remove external devices, perform a proper restart, and verify the keyboard layout and accessibility settings. Those three steps solve a large share of cases.
If the keyboard is dead across login screens, multiple profiles, and ChromeOS updates, switch to on-screen keyboard for access and treat it as likely hardware—then use diagnostics and consider repair if the Chromebook is still under warranty.
