To connect a keyboard, match its plug to an available port on your computer, then connect it without forcing the fit. Check both devices before buying an adapter: connector compatibility depends on the specific keyboard plug and the ports your computer actually has.
How to identify the keyboard connection
Look at the end of the keyboard’s cable and compare its shape with the ports on your computer. The USB Type-C specification describes a connector standard, but its existence does not tell you which connector either of your devices has. USB-IF lists USB Type-C Connector Specification Release 2.5, dated April 8, 2026.

- Inspect the keyboard plug and note its shape.
- Inspect the computer for a port that matches the plug.
- If they do not match, check the keyboard and computer documentation for a compatible connection option before purchasing an adapter. A universal adapter recommendation cannot be made from connector shape alone.
Do not force a plug into a port. If the plug does not fit comfortably, stop and verify the connector type.

Connect the keyboard and check whether it works
Once the plug and port match, connect the keyboard. Operating-system setup can vary, and the available official documentation here does not establish current Windows, macOS, or Linux installation steps. If the keyboard does not respond, consult the documentation for your specific keyboard and computer rather than assuming that every system uses the same setup path.

What USB keyboard standards do—and do not—tell you
USB-IF’s HID Version 1.11 includes an appendix on keyboard implementation. Its requirement that “The keyboard must support the Idle request” concerns how a USB keyboard is implemented; it is not an instruction for connecting one. The USB HID Usage Tables define keyboard usages and key names. Neither document identifies the connectors on a particular keyboard or computer.
