Yes—KeePass is still worth considering in 2026 if you want a password database you control as a local file and are comfortable managing its backups, synchronization, and device-specific apps. The official project lists KeePass 2.61.1, released May 1, 2026. Its security design encrypts the entire database, but that does not remove the need for a strong master secret, safe file handling, and a secure device.
What KeePass is—and its current status
KeePass is a free password manager built around an encrypted database file. The official download page lists KeePass 2.61.1, released May 1, 2026, with both installer and portable packages. The project states support for Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11, and for Linux, macOS, BSD, and other Unix-like systems through Mono. Listed architectures include x86, x64, and ARM64. These are the project’s stated compatibility details, not a guarantee that every system configuration or third-party package will work identically. KeePass downloads and system requirements.

“KeePass” can also refer to third-party apps that open compatible database files. The project’s download directory lists Android options including KeePassDroid, KeePass2Android, and KeePassDX, and Apple-platform options including OneKeePass, KeePassium, and Strongbox. These are separate clients, not one official KeePass mobile app; the project’s listing does not establish that they have equal maintenance, privacy, pricing, or features. KeePass download directory.

What the database encryption protects
KeePass documentation says the complete database is encrypted—not only the password fields. That includes usernames, URLs, notes, and other stored information. KeePass 2.x documents AES-256 and ChaCha20 encryption, with HMAC-SHA-256 used to check ciphertext integrity. These are design properties described by the project; they are not proof that the entire application is invulnerable. KeePass security features.

KDBX 4 supports both AES-KDF and Argon2 as key-derivation options. Argon2 lets users configure iterations, memory, and parallelism. There is no universally correct setting in the documentation: the practical choice depends on the device and the apps that need to open the file. KeePass KDBX 4 documentation.
What remains your responsibility
The master password, any key file, and the device where the database is unlocked remain critical. A key file adds a separate access requirement only if it is stored and backed up safely; lose it, and you may lose access to the database. Keep a recovery plan that protects the key file without placing it beside the database in an exposed location. KeePass supports a master password, a key file, or combined key components. Encryption cannot protect secrets from a compromised computer after the database is unlocked. Nor does it make every method of syncing or backing up the file safe. The official materials reviewed do not provide a named, current independent comparative security test of KeePass 2.61.1, so the listed algorithms should not be mistaken for a guarantee against every threat.

This flexibility comes with file-management work. You decide where the database lives, how its changes reach other devices, how backups are made and restored, and which client to use away from the desktop. The official documentation establishes portability and lists third-party mobile clients; it does not establish effortless setup or conflict-free synchronization in every arrangement. Treat syncing as a workflow you must choose and maintain, not as automatic universal sync.
Plugins add features—and a separate trust decision
Plugins can extend KeePass, but the project says most listed plugins are written by independent authors and it cannot check all of them for bugs or malicious code. Use only plugins you need, and assess their source and maintenance before installing them. Some hardware-token functions depend on independent plugins; they should not be treated as built-in KeePass features. KeePass plugins.

KeePass vs. KeePassXC and hosted password managers
KeePassXC is a separate password-manager project, not simply a newer edition of KeePass. Its documentation says it supports KDBX 3.1 and KDBX 4 and provides browser integration. The project announced KeePassXC 2.7.12 on March 10, 2026, and its audits page lists an ANSSI Security Visa for version 2.7.9. Those facts apply to KeePassXC, not KeePass 2.x, and they do not constitute a head-to-head security test. KeePassXC documentation, KeePassXC 2.7.12 release announcement, and KeePassXC audits.
The projects also differ in their plugin ecosystems. KeePassXC warns that many KeePass 2 plugins are poorly maintained or have known unpatched vulnerabilities, and says plugins do not receive the same review as KeePassXC’s own code. This is a caution about the respective plugin ecosystems, not evidence that KeePass itself has a known vulnerability. KeePassXC documentation.

A hosted password manager may suit someone who would rather have a service handle synchronization and wants polished mobile access and browser autofill. The trade-off is that the provider operates the hosted service and its sync model, rather than you managing a local database file. Which approach fits depends on how much setup and maintenance you are willing to take on; no particular hosted service or current plan is assessed here.
Quick Recap
| Decision factor | KeePass | KeePassXC | Hosted password manager |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core model | Encrypted, transferable database file | Supports KDBX 3.1 and KDBX 4 | Hosted account; provider operates the service |
| Synchronization and backups | You choose and manage file storage, sync, and backups | Depends on your chosen file and sync workflow | Provider-managed synchronization is the category-level convenience |
| Browser integration | Features depend on setup and any chosen plugins | Documented browser integration | Varies by service; not assessed here |
| Mobile access | Third-party clients are listed by the KeePass project | Client and platform details not stated in the cited material | Varies by service; not assessed here |
| Plugin considerations | Many listed plugins are independent; the project cannot check all for bugs or malicious code | Project warns that many KeePass 2 plugins are poorly maintained or have known unpatched vulnerabilities; KeePassXC plugins have a different review status | Not applicable as a direct KeePass-plugin comparison |
Who should choose KeePass?
- Choose KeePass if local-file ownership, portability, and control matter more to you than having a provider handle synchronization—and you will maintain backups and choose compatible apps.
- Compare KeePassXC if you want to keep using KDBX files but browser integration and a separate project’s release and security-review record are important factors.
- Consider the hosted-manager category if reducing sync setup and getting mobile and browser convenience matter more than managing a local database file yourself.
