For a few extra minutes, open Settings > Display > Screen timeout and choose the longest option available. Samsung currently documents choices from 15 seconds to 10 minutes, depending on model and software. For hands-free reading, turn on Keep screen on while viewing. For a continuously visible full screen, use Developer options > Stay awake while the device is charging. If you only need the clock or notifications, use Always On Display (AOD) instead.
The normal Screen timeout menu generally has no permanent “Never” setting. Menu names and availability can vary by Galaxy model, One UI version, carrier, region and form factor.
Choose the right way to keep a Samsung screen awake
| Need | Best first choice | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| A few additional minutes | Increase Screen timeout | Normally limited to 10 minutes |
| Reading while you look at the phone | Keep screen on while viewing | Uses the front camera and may not work in every condition or on every model |
| Full-screen dashboard or display | Stay awake in Developer options | Works while connected to a charger |
| Clock, date or notifications only | Always On Display | Shows limited information, not the open app |
| Video, navigation or reading in one app | That app’s own screen-on control | Behavior differs by app |
Increase Screen timeout to the maximum
Use this when you need the phone to remain active briefly and want the simplest, least intrusive solution.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Tap Screen timeout.
- Choose the longest duration shown. Samsung support currently documents a range of 15 seconds to 10 minutes, although the exact choices depend on the device and software: Samsung’s troubleshooting guide.
If you cannot find the menu, open Settings and search for Screen timeout. Some Samsung material describes 30 seconds as a common default, while regional documentation describes 15 seconds; neither is universal. See Samsung’s battery guidance and its regional display guidance.

This setting controls the active display after inactivity. It does not set the timeout to unlimited, and it does not necessarily control how long the lock screen remains visible. Samsung Canada notes that the lock screen can disappear sooner under a separate behavior: Samsung Canada’s explanation.
Keep the screen on while you are looking at it
Keep screen on while viewing uses the front camera to detect your face and prevent the display from timing out while you are viewing it.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Advanced features > Motions and gestures.
- Turn on Keep screen on while viewing.
The label may also appear in Settings search or near the Screen timeout controls. Samsung describes the feature and its path at this support page.

When viewing detection may fail
- The room is dark or your face is poorly lit.
- You are looking from an extreme angle or are not facing the phone.
- A mask, sunglasses or another obstruction hides part of your face.
- The phone is flat, positioned unusually or pointed away from you.
- A case or screen protector interferes with sensors.
- Your model or software does not support the feature.
Samsung says availability varies and lists devices, including some recent foldables, where the feature is unavailable. Troubleshooting details are in Samsung’s viewing-detection guide and its timeout troubleshooting page. This is a viewing aid, not a way to leave an unattended phone permanently illuminated.

Keep the full screen on continuously while charging
For a dashboard, monitoring display, presentation or kiosk-style setup, Android’s Stay awake developer option is the built-in method most likely to provide continuous full-screen visibility. It keeps the display on while the device is connected to a charger; it is not a battery-powered “Never timeout” switch.
Enable Stay awake
- Open Settings > About phone > Software information.
- Tap Build number repeatedly until Samsung confirms that Developer options are enabled. The wording and number of taps can vary.
- Return to Settings and open Developer options. Depending on One UI, it may be a top-level item, appear under Settings > System, or be near the bottom of Settings.
- Turn on Stay awake.
Samsung Community guidance documents the charging-only behavior: Samsung Community example. The display can still turn off if you press the power button, an app or system crashes, a device policy intervenes, or thermal protection acts.

Turn it off afterward
Return to Settings > Developer options and disable Stay awake when the dashboard or presentation is finished. Leaving it enabled can make a phone remain lit every time it is charging.
Use Always On Display when you only need glanceable information
Always On Display shows limited information—such as the time, date, notifications and missed calls—after the main display turns off. It does not keep a map, document, video or desktop visibly open.

Samsung says AOD slightly repositions its image to help prevent burn-in. That statement applies to AOD; it should not be generalized to a bright, static third-party app left open continuously. Power-saving configurations can restrict or disable AOD: Samsung’s power-saving troubleshooting.
App-specific ways to keep the display awake
Video players
Many video apps request that the display stay on during playback. If the screen sleeps, check the player’s playback, battery or screen-lock settings before changing global phone settings.
Navigation
Navigation apps may manage screen-on behavior themselves, especially when the phone is connected to power. Review the app’s navigation and display settings and use a charger for long journeys.

Reading apps and teleprompters
Use the app’s keep-awake option if available. Otherwise, try viewing detection or a 5–10-minute timeout. Camera-based viewing detection is unsuitable when the phone is positioned where nobody will be looking at it.
Dashboards, presentations and tablets
Use Stay awake with a charger on a stable, ventilated surface. Lock the device or use app pinning and other kiosk controls when people could touch or view it. Tablets and foldables can expose different settings on the main and cover screens.
Third-party keep-awake apps
Consider one only when Samsung’s features and the app’s own controls do not meet the task. Check the developer, permissions, maintenance history, compatibility and any battery-management exemptions before granting access. Do not assume every app is safe or current.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the screen may still turn off
- Verify the setting: search Settings for both Screen timeout and Keep screen on while viewing.
- Separate active-screen and lock-screen behavior: a phone can obey the display timeout and still hide the lock screen sooner.
- Remove accessories temporarily: test without a case or screen protector if sensors may be obstructed. Samsung lists accessory and proximity-sensor interference as possible causes: Samsung troubleshooting.
- Improve face detection: provide better light, face the phone and uncover the front camera area.
- Check Power saving: temporarily disable it and retest, because it can restrict display functions.
- Check the active app: some apps permit sleep while others request that the display remain awake.
- Restart the device: then test the same setting again.
- Install software updates: especially if the problem began after a One UI or app change.
- Check Stay awake: disable it if the screen remains on unexpectedly while charging.
- Contact Samsung: use Samsung Members to submit an error report or contact support if a setting is missing or malfunctioning. Samsung provides feature-availability guidance at this support page.
Why the screen dims before turning off
Dimming is normally the final stage of the timeout process. A longer timeout delays the eventual turn-off but may not remove this dimming stage. Other causes include Adaptive brightness, Extra dim, Power saving, thermal or battery-protection behavior, and the intentionally low brightness of AOD. A display that looks dark is not necessarily staying fully awake.

- Power: Android recommends keeping the screen on only as long as necessary because a continuously active display can drain the battery quickly: Android screen-on guidance.
- Heat: charging, high brightness and a continuously lit display can add heat. Use a reputable charger on a hard, ventilated surface—not under bedding or on a sofa.
- Privacy: viewing detection uses the front camera to identify whether your face is present. Samsung’s documentation establishes face detection for this feature; it does not establish that the camera records or stores video.
- Accidental touches: an unattended awake phone can respond to clothing, objects or another person. Use screen locking, app pinning or a physically protected mount when appropriate.
- Static images: do not assume that a bright, unmoving app is protected in the same way as Samsung’s repositioning AOD image.
For Android developers: keep an Activity awake
If you are building the app rather than configuring a phone, Android supports the FLAG_KEEP_SCREEN_ON window flag. It belongs to the foreground Activity, not a Samsung Settings menu or a background service.
window.addFlags(WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_KEEP_SCREEN_ON)
Clear it when the screen is no longer needed:
window.clearFlags(WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_KEEP_SCREEN_ON)
XML layouts can use:
<RelativeLayout
android:keepScreenOn="true">
When the Activity goes into the background, Android can allow the display to sleep normally. API guidance and battery cautions are documented at Android Developers and Android’s wakefulness guidance.
