There is no single free app that reproduces all of Photoshop. Start with Affinity by Canva for a polished desktop workflow if its reported 2026 free terms fit your needs, Photopea for immediate browser-based PSD work, GIMP for open-source raster editing, or Krita for digital painting. Canva, Adobe Express, and Pixlr are better substitutes for specific design tasks than for Photoshop’s complete layer-based workflow.

Photopea: best for browser-based PSD work
Photopea runs in a modern browser on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Chromebooks. It offers layers, masks, selections, text, adjustments, and compositing in a familiar Photoshop-like layout, making it the practical first stop for an old PSD on a computer without Photoshop.

- No traditional installation.
- Useful on school, borrowed, or Chromebook computers.
- Strongest reason to choose it is its PSD-oriented workflow.
Limitations and privacy
Free use is ad-supported. Browser performance depends on RAM, browser support, image dimensions, layer count, and file size; large projects can feel less comfortable than in a desktop app. Confidential client files, identity documents, or unreleased product images require checking the current privacy and retention terms before upload. Photopea is not guaranteed to reproduce every plug-in, filter, color-management setting, Smart Object, or automation workflow.
Test a copy of every important PSD
Keep the original untouched and compare a working copy. Pay particular attention to Smart Objects, layer styles, adjustment layers, type rendering, linked assets, clipping masks, blend modes, 16-bit or 32-bit color, CMYK profiles, artboards, vector masks, and plug-in effects. “PSD compatible” means a file can be opened or saved—not that it will round-trip identically.

Best fit
Choose GIMP when local files, Linux support, community tutorials, and long-term independence matter. Plug-ins, scripts, custom brushes, and configuration can extend it.
Trade-offs
GIMP is not “Photoshop but free.” Its interface, terminology, shortcuts, and workflow conventions differ substantially. PSD support is useful but incomplete, and Photoshop-specific actions, plug-ins, and layer behavior may need replacement or rebuilding. Check current behavior against the release and documentation you install rather than relying on old tutorials.
Krita: best for painting and illustration

Paint.NET: lightweight Windows editing
Paint.NET is a Windows-focused proprietary editor for cropping, resizing, basic color correction, layers, text, screenshots, and quick cleanup. It is easier and faster to learn than a full professional suite.

I process camera RAW files
Use a dedicated processor such as Darktable or RawTherapee, then send rendered images to GIMP, Affinity, or another compositor. RAW development, cataloging, camera profiles, lens corrections, and batch exposure work are a separate category from layered editing.
I need logos or vector artwork
Use Inkscape or Affinity’s vector tools if available under its current free offering. Vector artwork is often a better fit than a raster editor.
Important checks before replacing Photoshop
- Privacy: determine whether a browser service processes files locally or uploads them, whether an account is required, and how long files are retained.
- Commercial rights: software being free does not make templates, fonts, stock media, plug-ins, brushes, or AI outputs unrestricted. Read each asset license.
- Color and print: verify CMYK, ICC profiles, soft proofing, 16-bit workflow, PDF/X, spot colors, bleed, crop marks, and font embedding for prepress.

- Compatibility: file compatibility, interface familiarity, tool compatibility, automation compatibility, and asset compatibility are separate questions.
- Learning support: compare current documentation, tutorial quality, keyboard shortcuts, accessibility, and community support before committing.
A safer migration workflow
- Keep the original Photoshop files untouched and make working copies.
- Export fallback TIFF, PNG, JPEG, PDF, or SVG files where the destination requires a flattened or universal result.
- Open representative PSDs in the proposed replacement and compare dimensions, color, type, masks, effects, and blending.
- Rebuild brushes, shortcuts, actions, scripts, and plug-ins rather than assuming they transfer.
- Run a test export and print or deliver it only after visual and technical checks.
