Keep Your Crypto Wallet Safer: Protect Your Keys, Backup, and Transactions

Keep your crypto recovery phrase secret, verify software sources, ignore urgent wallet messages, and review each transaction before signing. Learn what hardware signers can—and cannot—protect.

Protecting a cryptocurrency wallet starts with one rule: never reveal its recovery phrase. Then make sure wallet software comes from an official source, treat unexpected “security” messages as possible phishing, and approve only transactions you understand. A hardware signer can keep private keys isolated from an internet-connected computer, but it cannot protect a phrase you disclose or make a deceptive approval safe.

Keep your recovery phrase private

A recovery phrase—also called a seed phrase or wallet backup—can restore access to a wallet. Treat it as equivalent to the keys that control the funds. Anyone who obtains it may be able to take control, so never enter it into a website, share it in a message, or give it to someone claiming to be customer support.

Trezor’s official guidance says, “Never share your wallet backup (recovery seed) with anyone!” Ledger likewise says its support will never ask for the phrase. Read their guidance at Trezor’s scams and phishing page and Ledger’s phishing-campaign status page.

  • Keep the phrase private and offline. As a practical consequence, don’t photograph it, store it in cloud storage, or paste it into an app or form.
  • Keep any physical backup somewhere secure and protected from unauthorized access. A particular material or branded backup product is not required by the cited guidance.
  • Do not send the phrase to a support agent, caller, website, or anyone promising to verify, recover, migrate, or protect the wallet.

Recognize and handle wallet phishing

Unexpected messages that create urgency—claiming your wallet needs verification, recovery, migration, or immediate protection—are a reason to stop, not a reason to act quickly. Scammers may imitate wallet providers and direct people to convincing-looking pages designed to capture recovery words or prompt unsafe actions.

  1. Do not click links, open attachments, scan QR codes, or reply with recovery information.
  2. Do not install an application or connect a wallet because an unsolicited message tells you to.
  3. If you need help, navigate to the provider’s official website independently and start a support conversation there.

Ledger and Trezor both publish guidance on scams and phishing; their pages are useful starting points for provider-specific warnings: Ledger and Trezor.

Install wallet software only from official channels

Use the wallet provider’s official site or another download route that the provider itself identifies. Ledger identifies its website as the official location for downloading Ledger Wallet. Avoid search ads, unsolicited messages, and unofficial download pages, which may direct you to software that imitates a wallet application.

Review what you are approving

Self-custody puts control of transaction approvals and fund movement in your hands. Before signing, check the transaction information shown by your wallet signer and proceed only if the action matches what you intended. If the displayed details are unclear or unexpected, do not approve it; pause and verify what the wallet is asking you to authorize.

Ledger’s device threat model includes user consent as a security objective, but that does not make every transaction automatically safe or provide a complete verification checklist. Trezor notes that users control where funds are sent and that transactions are final and irreversible by design. See Ledger Donjon’s threat model and Trezor’s security guidance.

What a hardware signer can—and cannot—do

A hardware signer can reduce a specific risk: exposure of private keys to a potentially compromised internet-connected computer. Ledger’s developer documentation describes signers as isolating cryptographic secrets from potentially insecure computers. That makes a cryptocurrency hardware wallet a relevant option for someone who wants that separation.

It is not a cure-all. A device cannot make it safe to disclose a recovery phrase, guarantee that software came from a genuine source, or ensure that an action you approve is the one you intended. You remain responsible for the phrase, the device’s setup and updates, and each transaction approval. Ledger’s materials describe security objectives and threats; they are not independent comparative tests of wallet models. The cited sources do not establish a best model.

When assessing a signer, consider how it isolates keys, how it displays and confirms user intent, how you can verify device genuineness and firmware updates, and what backup and recovery responsibilities you must handle. Also weigh convenience against your ability to use and recover the wallet safely. For background, consult Ledger’s device-app introduction, its threat model, and Trezor’s overview of wallet threats.

How widespread are wallet security incidents?

A 2023 paper, “SoK: Design, Vulnerabilities, and Security Measures of Cryptocurrency Wallets,” reports that its authors identified 84 wallet-security incidents from 2012 through 2024, accounting for $5.4 billion. That is the paper’s stated scope and result—not an annual loss figure, a current 2026 estimate, or a complete count of every wallet attack. The abstract is available at arXiv.
