The important boundary: the vault protects the key while the database is locked; once unlocked, the key can be made usable by the agent in memory. This setup does not automatically encrypt hostnames or connection settings, and it does not protect an active computer session from compromise.
What a local SSH vault does—and does not—store
KeePassXC is one documented way to keep SSH key material in a local encrypted database. You can attach a private key to a database entry, or use an entry to manage the decryption key for a key file stored elsewhere. Its SSH Agent integration connects to an existing compatible agent; KeePassXC does not provide a separate SSH agent. See KeePassXC’s documentation and FAQ for the feature and its current limitations.

Keep host aliases and connection options in your SSH client configuration if that suits your workflow. Storing a private key in KeePassXC does not, by itself, move or encrypt your SSH configuration. Hostnames remain in whatever file or service contains that configuration, and their privacy depends on how that location and its backups are protected.

How the vault and SSH agent work together
- Protect the key at rest. Create a local encrypted KeePassXC database with a strong master credential. Store the SSH private key as an entry attachment, or keep the key file elsewhere and use the database to manage its decryption key.
- Connect to a compatible agent. Configure KeePassXC’s SSH Agent integration for your platform and existing agent. When the database is unlocked, the integration can add the intended key to the agent; when it is locked, it can remove the key, subject to the agent’s capabilities and configuration.
- Authenticate through the agent. SSH clients request authentication operations from the agent rather than repeatedly decrypting the on-disk key. The remote host does not receive the private key, but a process permitted to access the agent may be able to ask it to sign authentication data.
The agent is therefore a sensitive runtime boundary, not another encrypted vault. OpenSSH explains the agent’s role and the risks around access and forwarding in its agent restriction documentation; its features page describes agent use without revealing private keys to the server. The IETF’s RFC 9987 describes the SSH agent as a key-management component.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Configure the integration for your platform
KeePassXC documents SSH-agent integration for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Exact setup depends on the installed KeePassXC release, the SSH client, and the agent you use. Consult the current KeePassXC documentation for release-specific interface labels and setup steps rather than assuming every platform uses the same menus or agent.
- Agent prerequisite: The integration expects an existing compatible SSH agent. macOS commonly has an agent available; Windows has multiple possible agent setups.
- Key formats: The integration supports OpenSSH-format key files, including encrypted keys. KeePassXC says PuTTY
.ppkand RFC4716 files are not supported by this integration. - Agent differences: Implementations can vary in their support for removing keys, confirmation constraints, and key types. Test the lock-and-remove behavior with the specific agent you use.
Understand the security boundary
When the database is locked
The encrypted database protects its contents at rest. KeePassXC says information is decrypted in computer memory when accessed. Keep that distinction clear: locking the database protects stored entries, but it cannot guarantee secrecy from every form of endpoint capture or memory inspection.

When the database is unlocked
Once the key is available to the agent, a process allowed to reach the agent may request signing operations. The private-key bytes are not thereby disclosed to a remote SSH server, but the ability to authenticate can still be abused through a compromised local session or a reachable forwarded agent. Do not treat an unlocked vault or agent socket as harmless.
Agent forwarding is not key copying
Forwarding lets an SSH agent be reached through a remote connection; it does not copy the private key to the server. However, a remote system with access to the forwarded agent may be able to request authentication operations. Avoid forwarding unless the workflow requires it, and use host-bound or confirmation constraints where your agent supports them and they fit the task. OpenSSH discusses these risks in its agent restriction documentation.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Keep the workflow recoverable and limited
- Make a backup of the database and verify that you can restore it; KeePassXC warns that losing the database password can permanently lock the database and recommends protecting the database from loss or accidental deletion. See its Getting Started Guide.
- Keep a secure recovery copy of the master credential. A backup that cannot be decrypted is not a usable recovery copy.
- Load only the keys needed for the current task, then lock the database when finished.
- Remove stale identities from the agent when they are no longer needed, and confirm that your agent actually removes them on lock.
- Do not forward agent access by default; enable it only for a specific remote workflow that needs it.
Optional database protection with a hardware challenge
KeePassXC documents YubiKey challenge-response as an optional way to enhance the database encryption key. It is an additional database-protection choice, not a substitute for secure agent handling, backups, or a strong master credential. Compatibility depends on the KeePassXC version, operating system, and hardware; check current documentation for your setup before selecting a key.
