What to do before selling, giving away or trading it in
Back up the old device, move the information you want, and confirm you can access it on the replacement before erasing anything. Apple says Quick Start works for devices on iOS 11 or later; older iOS devices can use iCloud, iTunes, or Finder transfer methods. See Apple’s handoff instructions.

- Check whether authenticator apps need reactivation on the new device.
- On an iPhone, check Parts and Service History for a “Finish Repair” message. Apple says an unfinished repair must be completed before trade-in.
- Unpair an Apple Watch, if one is paired. Consider cancelling or transferring AppleCare if applicable.
How to erase the device safely
- Sign out of iCloud and the App Store. On the device, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [device] > Erase All Content and Settings, then follow the prompts. If prompted, erase the eSIM profile if it applies to your handoff.
- Remove the old device from your trusted-device list. If you are moving to a non-Apple phone, deregister iMessage.
- For an iPhone with a removable SIM, take it out. The FTC notes that a SIM may contain personal information; if you will not reuse it, the FTC recommends destroying it. Remove an SD card if the device has one.
Apple Support says that tapping “Erase All Content and Settings” completely erases the device. That does not delete content stored in iCloud. Do not manually delete synced photos or contacts as a substitute: deletions can sync to iCloud and other connected devices. Erasing also turns off Find My and Activation Lock.

If the device has already left your possession, ask the recipient to erase it. If it is lost or stolen, use Find Devices on iCloud.com to erase it, remove it from trusted devices, and change your Apple Account password. Apple warns that changing the password alone does not remove data stored on the device.
What to expect from Apple Trade In in the United States
Apple’s U.S. program offers online and Apple Store options, with eligible value available as credit toward a purchase or as an Apple Gift Card. The estimate depends on model and condition and may be revised after inspection if the device differs from the condition described. Confirm current terms on Apple’s U.S. Trade In page; program details and availability may differ elsewhere.

That page says an online trade-in device should arrive within 14 days after the new device is received and that the online process generally takes two to three weeks. These are U.S.-page timelines, not a guarantee for every transaction or region.
Recycling and battery precautions
For mail-in recycling, follow the recipient’s current battery and packaging instructions. Apple’s U.S. guidance says not to mail a device with a swollen, damaged, or defective battery; it also says not to ship loose batteries or disassembled devices. If you are dropping a device off, check the collection provider’s local requirements before you go. The Apple Trade In page describes its U.S. program, while the FTC’s phone disposal guidance covers removing personal information and removable cards.
