If a link jumps from a browser into an app, first check whether you need to change the default browser or stop an app-associated link from opening that app. On Android, Firefox has a direct Never option for opening links in apps. On iPhone and Windows, the documented settings are different: choosing a default browser does not necessarily disable links associated with an app.
First identify what is opening the app
A default-browser setting chooses which browser handles ordinary web links. An app-and-website association is separate: it can route a supported link to its associated app. Also note where you tapped the link. A link opened inside a mail, social, or search app may follow that app’s own behavior; there is no single cross-app setting established here for those cases.

Stop Firefox for Android from opening links in apps
Mozilla documents a browser-specific control that prevents Firefox from handing links to native apps:
- Open Firefox and tap the three-dot menu.
- Tap Settings > Advanced > Open links in apps.
- Select Never.
The other documented choices are Always and Ask before opening. This setting applies to Firefox for Android; it is not a universal Android switch. Mozilla’s support article was last updated September 8, 2024. Mozilla’s instructions for opening links in native apps.

Choose the default browser on Android
To change which browser handles ordinary web links, open Settings > Apps > Default apps or Choose default apps, then tap Browser app and select a browser. Google documents this as the default-browser route; it does not establish a universal way to disable every app’s supported-link association. Set the default browser on iPhone
On an iPhone running iOS 26, Apple documents this path: Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Browser App. Choose a supported browser to handle web links. Why a link can still open an iPhone app
Apple’s Universal Links let a website and its associated app handle links together. Apple says the association is verified through a file on the website’s server. In Safari, tapping a Universal Link to the same domain keeps the user in Safari; tapping one for a different domain can open the associated app. That behavior is distinct from the default-browser selection. Windows provides a page for reviewing registered website-to-app associations. Open Settings > Apps > Apps for websites to see them. Microsoft documents these associations as a way for supported links to launch an app. Microsoft’s documentation on apps for websites.

Browser behavior can matter too. Microsoft documents that supported links clicked in Microsoft Edge Legacy launch the associated app, while supported browsers including Chromium Edge and Firefox keep the user in the browsing experience. This describes the documented browser behavior, not a guarantee for every link, app, or future Windows and browser version.

What to try if the link still opens an app
- Note whether you tapped the link in a browser or inside another app. The latter may control how it opens.
- Set your preferred default browser using your platform’s settings.
- If you use Firefox for Android, set Open links in apps to Never.
- If the handoff continues, consider whether the site is associated with the app rather than assuming the default-browser setting failed. On Windows, review Apps for websites; on iPhone, Universal Links may explain the behavior.
- If the menu or result differs from these steps, include your operating system version, browser, and the app involved when seeking device-specific help. Menu names and link routing can vary by version and device.
