Scratch branches and free-tier drafting sessions are useful for trying out a change to an API schema, a migration, or a tool definition. They should not be where that change becomes trusted. Casey Sun’s September 16, 2026 DEV Community article, “Keep Free-Lane Diffs Off the Schema Lock,” draws that line directly: a low-trust drafting lane may propose contract bytes, but an accountable human or trusted job must authorize those bytes before they reach the schema lock or any apply step. Free-lane output stays out of the lock, and production apply jobs run only from the trusted path.
What the free lane and the schema lock mean
The “free lane” is the article’s term for any drafting environment with low trust: a free-tier model session, a scratch branch, or a sandbox whose origin is free or unknown. The “schema lock” is the committed record of which contract bytes a team has accepted. In the article’s design it consists of a committed lockfile and a pending digest map, and only the lock owner’s path writes to it.

The distinction is about trust, not about quality. A free-lane draft can be correct and still be the wrong thing to apply, because nothing in the drafting environment establishes who approved the bytes or whether the consumers of that contract have been checked.
Which files count as contract-class changes
The article’s test is whether other systems depend on the bytes. It lists these as contract-class artifacts:
#1 Best Overall
- This 4-3/8" x 7" small size, 1 subject notebook has 80 double-sided college ruled sheets that fight ink bleed and are perforated for easy tear out. Perfectly sized for when you're on the go.
- Tough pockets resist tears and hold loose sheets and notes. Durable plastic water-resistant front cover helps protect your notes and our Spiral Lock wire helps prevent snags on clothes and backpacks.
- All the benefits of our larger notebooks in a smaller, easy to carry size. Sheets measure 4-3/8" x 7 when torn out.
- Available in Seaglass Green
- LASTS ALL YEAR. GUARANTEED!*
- Version-controlled OpenAPI and JSON Schema files
- Agent tool parameter schemas
- Database migrations and generated ORM models
- Protobuf, Avro, and GraphQL definitions
- Webhook payload contracts consumed by partners
- IAM condition documents that authorize destructive writes
It classifies README edits and a service’s internal log-format experiment as not contract-class, so they can move freely.
Where scratch work stops
The article offers policy classifications for specific edits. They are the author’s suggested policy, not a published standard, and they are reproduced here as the article presents them.
Rank #2
- A classroom classic: this 6-pack of 1-subject spiral notebooks helps you identify your subjects at a glance with color-coding efficiency; color assortment may vary
- The right ruling: these 8" x 10-1/2", college-ruled notebooks fit more writing per page than wide-ruled sheets; each notebook provides 70 double-sided sheets with red margin lines
- Perect perforation: Dependable micro-perforated sheets retain your must-have notes but still detach cleanly when you’re ready to revise
- Glide from page to page: Your favorite gel or ballpoint pens will move effortlessly across these smooth pages for A+ notes with minimal ink bleeding or show-through
- 3-Hold punched: Every notebook comes 3-hole punched to fit a standard binder; take along one notebook or several to save extra trips to the locker
| Change | Author’s classification |
|---|---|
| Temporary comments in a contract file | Permitted in the scratch lane |
| Local test renames | Permitted in the scratch lane |
| Required-field edit in a tool-schema | Draft-only; must be authorized through the lock owner |
| Database migration | Draft-only; kept behind designated review ownership |
| API path or HTTP method removal | Draft-only, or refused from a free origin |
| Webhook enum shrinkage | Draft-only, or refused from a free origin |
| Audit records | Draft-only, or refused from a free origin |
| Secret or IAM policy bytes | Draft-only, or refused from a free origin |
Two further rules sit alongside the table. Removals and type changes need the locked path regardless of how small the diff looks. A rename should be treated as a delete plus an add, which means it inherits the removal rules.
How the proposed gate works
The article includes a sample Node.js gate. It is an unexecuted proposal: the author has not presented it as a tested implementation. Its logic has three checks:

- Path match. Flag any changed file whose path matches a contract prefix. The prefix list is intentionally incomplete and must be extended to fit the repository’s layout.
- Origin check. Reject free or unknown origin labels on those paths. The script trusts an input named
PATCH_ORIGIN, so that label needs its own protection. - Digest comparison. Compare each file’s digest with the committed lockfile and the pending digest map. A mismatch means the bytes have not been approved as they now stand.
The review and acceptance workflow
The article’s example workflow keeps approval with people who own the contract:
- A lock owner reviews the candidate change and writes its digest to the pending digest map.
- Consumer fixtures run against the candidate schema.
- After merge, the accepted digest is recorded in the lockfile.
Fixtures and versioned breaking changes
The article recommends keeping consumer fixtures alongside the schemas they test, including fixtures that are expected to fail. A failing fixture that is supposed to fail documents that a consumer depends on behavior the change would break. For breaking changes, the article prefers a versioned document over silently dropping a required key, so existing consumers keep a defined contract while the new version rolls out.

- This 5 subject notebook has 200 double-sided, college ruled sheets that fight ink bleed and are perforated for easy tear out. Sheets measure 8-1/2" x 11" when torn out.
- Tough pockets help prevent tears and hold 8-1/2" x 11" loose sheets. Durable plastic front cover is water-resistant to help protect your notes and our Spiral Lock wire helps prevent snags on clothes and backpacks.
- Made with SFI certified paper. Notebook is recyclable – just remove the reinforcement tape on the pocket and recycle the rest! Available in Pacific Blue.
Apply and revert
The article proposes running apply jobs only on a signed, non-free runner. For reverts, it proposes returning to a pinned checksum rather than asking a model to generate a repair. The reasoning is that a repair produced under pressure from a broken deploy is itself a new, unreviewed change.

What the gate does not prove
The article is explicit about the gate’s limits, and a team adopting it should treat these as part of the design:
Best Value
- BEST-SELLING HARDCOVER JOURNAL: This classic 5.6" x 8" vegan leather journal features a durable and water-resistant cover, 160 college ruled lined pages, inner expandable pocket, sticker labels, ribbon bookmark & elastic closure band.
- PREMIUM PAPER: Made with high-quality, 100 gsm acid-free paper in light ivory color, our journal paper is thicker than average notebooks & note pads, so you can confidently use most pens, pencils, and markers without ghosting and bleed-through.
- LAY FLAT DESIGN FOR WRITING EASE: Our thread-bound, college ruled notebook is designed to lay flat, making it easier to write for both right and left-handed users. It’s the perfect notebook for journaling, note taking and planning.
- INNER POCKET: Includes an expandable inner storage pocket to store appointment cards, notes, receipts, and more. Personalize your journal cover & spine with the sheet of sticker labels included.
- VERSATILE LINED NOTEBOOK: Ideal for journaling, note-taking, planning, or creative writing. Whether you're making a to-do list, capturing ideas, or writing notes, this journal makes a perfect notebook for school, work, or home office.
- Checksum equality does not prove that a change is semantically safe. A file can match its approved digest and still change meaning.
- Fixtures miss behavioral breaks. The article’s examples include money rounding and timezone shifts, which a schema can leave structurally valid while changing results.
- The path-prefix list is incomplete by design and must be extended for each repository.
- The gate is not a backup substitute and is not a secret scanner.
- Because the script is unexecuted, the article instructs readers to trial it on staging branches before relying on it.
When you may not need this gate
The article identifies two situations in which the full gate may be more than a team needs. The first is a team with no external contract consumers and no migrations. The second is a team that already requires two-person review on every schema file. In both cases the core rule still holds, but the mechanical enforcement adds less.
The rule is stated in the article as of its September 16, 2026 publication. Teams adopting the approach should check the current version of the article, since the sample code and its prefix list are the parts most likely to change.
