Update a domain’s registration contacts through the registrar or reseller that manages it—not through ICANN. Keep the registrant information accurate, use a monitored technical contact, and retain control of the registrar account even when someone else handles day-to-day work.
Know which contact details you are managing
The registrant is the person or organization listed as holding the domain registration. Registration records may also include administrative or technical contact details, but the fields available and how they are used can vary by registrar and applicable policy. Your registrar’s current account interface and instructions are the authority for a specific domain.

Keep the registrant’s information accurate and update it when it changes. ICANN’s guidance, under the cited Registrar Accreditation Agreement (RAA) terms, says registrants should update changed details within seven days. It also describes registrar action, including possible suspension or cancellation, if a registrant fails to update information or respond to an accuracy inquiry within 15 days. These periods are tied to the cited terms; do not assume every domain extension worldwide follows identical rules. See ICANN’s Keeping Registration Data Accurate guidance.

Find the registrar and make the update
- Identify the registrar. Check the account or receipt used to register the domain. If you do not know which registrar manages it, use ICANN’s information for domain name registrants and its registrant lookup tool.
- Sign in or contact support. Open the domain’s settings and confirm who is listed as the registrant and which contact fields are available. If a reseller registered the domain or manages your account, contact that reseller or the registrar for the relevant process.
- Replace outdated details. Enter accurate information and choose email addresses that are actively monitored. For technical notices, consider a role-based address such as a technical-support inbox rather than a staff member’s personal address, if the registrar supports it.
- Complete any requested confirmation. Follow the registrar’s verification instructions and check that the updated details are reflected in the account. There is no single confirmation workflow for every registrar.
ICANN states: “Contact your Registrar to update your contact information. ICANN org does not (and cannot) verify or update your contact information. Only your Registrar or its Reseller can assist you with contact information updates.” Read the ICANN FAQ on registrant contact information.

Choose a technical contact that can act on notices
A technical contact should be an address or person who can reliably receive and handle operational messages. Where a technical contact is provided, ICANN’s Registration Data Policy allows the registrant or its representative to be designated, or non-personal technical contact details to be used. That means an individual employee’s personal email need not be the default choice.
- Use an inbox someone checks regularly, with a backup or coverage plan.
- Make sure the person or team receiving messages knows who can approve registrar-account or DNS changes.
- Review the address when staff, contractors, or support arrangements change.
Do not assume an “administrative contact” field will always be available or displayed in the same way. Registration data requirements and registrar interfaces can change, so check the settings for your domain.

Check what the public record shows
Use ICANN’s registrant lookup tool to inspect the registration data available publicly for the domain. Public RDDS/WHOIS or RDAP information is not necessarily identical to the full data held by the registrar. Ask the registrar which fields are displayed and what privacy or proxy options currently apply.
Privacy and proxy services have different effects under ICANN’s descriptions:
Rank #3
| Service | Registrant of record | What to understand |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy service | The customer remains the registrant of record. | Alternate contact information may be used in public data; check the service and registrar terms for what is shown and how messages are handled. |
| Proxy service | The proxy provider is the registrant of record. | The provider has the legal rights and responsibilities associated with being the registrant. Review the terms, contact channel, and forwarding process before choosing it. |
These distinctions are described by ICANN in its information on privacy and proxy services. Neither option should be treated as a guarantee that all registration data becomes inaccessible.

If the domain should belong to a different person or organization, contact the registrar about changing the registrant or transferring the domain to another registrant. ICANN’s Change of Registrant information covers specified changes involving the registrant’s name, organization, email, and certain administrative email changes. The exact procedure and any processing requirements depend on the applicable policy and registrar; confirm the steps for your domain rather than assuming every contact edit is an ownership change.

Keep account control when work is delegated
A developer or service provider can perform routine domain work without becoming the only person with access to the registrar account. Keep the account credentials and recovery methods under the registrant’s control, and grant others only the access they need where the registrar supports separate permissions.
If someone else registered the domain, contact that person and the registrar to establish appropriate account access and confirm the registrant of record. ICANN’s registrant FAQ advises keeping management credentials even when domain management is outsourced. Document who can make changes and how the business can recover access if a working relationship ends.
Make contact reviews part of domain maintenance
Recheck the registration contacts when the registrant’s address or organization changes, a technical owner leaves, a contractor relationship ends, or the registrar changes its contact fields or privacy options. A short review of the registrar account and public lookup can catch stale routes for important notices before they become an access or renewal problem.
