Keep Azure Key Vault Secrets Current in Go with mamori

mamori can reconcile Go configuration with Azure Key Vault through polling. Learn how latest-version references, Azure identity, and application-side update handling fit together.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To keep a Go service’s Azure Key Vault secret current, it must retrieve changes after startup and apply them to its live configuration. mamori’s Azure provider does this through polling—not instant push notifications—when the application uses its watch and reconciliation path. A new Key Vault version alone does not change a value already held in process memory.

What changes when a Key Vault secret rotates?

Azure Key Vault stores secrets as versioned values. If a Go service reads a secret once during startup, it continues using that in-memory value until its code retrieves and applies another one. Creating a newer version in the vault does not update the running process by itself.

mamori provides typed configuration loading and a watch/reconciliation path for this scenario. Its Azure provider resolves a Key Vault reference; mamori can revalidate the resulting configuration and atomically swap it when an update is found. The application still owns the consequences of that swap. For example, a database pool may need an update callback or equivalent step to reconnect with the replacement credential.

Choose between startup loading and watching

Approach How it behaves Trade-off
One-time load Load configuration at startup and keep using it until the process reloads or restarts. Simpler when secrets change only during deployment; it does not react to runtime rotation on its own.
Continuous watch Poll for source changes, revalidate configuration, and apply an accepted replacement. Can respond to rotation without a process restart, but updates depend on polling and on application code accepting and applying them.

Use one-time loading if your deployment process deliberately restarts services after changing secrets. Use watching when the service should respond to a new upstream value while it remains running, and define what a successful application-level change means for dependent resources.

How Azure Key Vault references work

The provider is a separate Go module, github.com/xavidop/mamori/providers/azure, built on Azure’s azsecrets SDK. Its reference format is:

azure-kv://<vault-name>/<secret-name>[#json-key][?version=<v>]

Reference Meaning
azure-kv://my-vault/db-password Resolve the latest version of db-password.
azure-kv://my-vault/api-key?version=abc123 Resolve the explicitly pinned version abc123.
azure-kv://my-vault/creds#password Select the password field from a JSON secret.

Omitting the version follows the latest version; specifying one pins the reference rather than automatically following later versions. Version identifiers should be treated as identifiers, not assumed to be sequential numbers. Latest-version lookup suits a secret expected to rotate; pinning provides deliberate control over which version the application consumes.

Install and register the Azure provider

The provider documentation shows installing the Azure provider module and registering it through a blank import. Package release numbers and compatibility details are not stated here, so check the current provider documentation before selecting versions or adapting the setup.

Set up identity and Key Vault access

The provider authenticates with Azure DefaultAzureCredential. Depending on the environment, credential sources documented for this integration include local environment configuration, managed identity, and Azure CLI credentials. Selecting a credential does not authorize it: the identity the application actually uses must have permission to read secrets in the target vault.

  1. Choose the runtime identity for the environment where the service runs, such as its managed identity in Azure.

  2. Grant that principal the necessary Key Vault secret-read access for the target vault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. Run the service using that identity and confirm that the reference resolves from the intended vault.

Microsoft’s Go secrets quickstart demonstrates the azsecrets and azidentity packages and granting access through an Azure role assignment. Follow the access model configured for your vault rather than assuming that successful credential discovery also grants secret access.

Understand polling and update timing

Key Vault does not provide native change notifications to this mamori provider. It polls, with a configurable interval and jitter, so a new version is discovered on a polling-based cadence rather than through an immediate event-driven push. The sources do not establish a measured refresh latency; the configured polling behavior and the application’s own update handling determine when a change takes effect.

Reconciliation is not complete merely because a replacement value was fetched. The application needs to accept the updated configuration and apply it. If existing objects capture the old credential—for example, an established database pool—provide an update callback or equivalent lifecycle action so they can begin using the replacement.

Keep secret access reliable and within Key Vault’s purpose

  • Cache thoughtfully. Microsoft recommends caching secret values instead of calling Key Vault for every use, both to reduce API calls and to avoid throttling. Refresh cached values when secrets rotate.

    • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
    • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.

  • Handle transient failures. Microsoft recommends retries with exponential backoff for transient errors and throttling. Decide how the service should behave if a refresh fails, rather than treating an unsuccessful poll as a successful update.

  • Monitor access. Microsoft recommends enabling Key Vault logging and reviewing access. These are application and Azure operational responsibilities, not automatic consequences of registering the mamori provider.

  • Keep ordinary settings elsewhere. Key Vault secrets fit credentials, connection strings, passwords, and access keys. Microsoft recommends Azure App Configuration for ordinary settings such as IP addresses, service names, and feature flags.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep values concise. The Key Vault secrets overview states a maximum size of 25 KB per secret. For credentials with multiple components, Microsoft notes that a formatted connection string or JSON object can be used.
