Keep a Discord Bot Running on Render: Free-Tier Limits and Your Options

Render’s Free tier cannot reliably keep a Discord bot running continuously. Learn what triggers spin-down, why pings fall short, and when to choose a paid Background Worker or Web Service.

You cannot reliably stop a Discord bot from sleeping on Render’s Free tier. Render spins down a Free web service after 15 minutes without inbound HTTP requests or WebSocket messages from an existing connection. A normal Discord bot’s outbound connection to Discord should not be assumed to count as inbound activity. For continuous operation, use paid compute; periodic pings are not an uptime guarantee.

Why does a Discord bot go offline after 15 minutes?

Render’s Free web-service idle timer is based on traffic arriving at the service: HTTP requests or WebSocket messages received through an existing connection. Render’s current documentation says a new HTTP request or a new WebSocket connection wakes a spun-down service, with spin-up taking about one minute. Those are Render’s documented limits, not independent performance measurements. Render’s Free service documentation describes the rule.

A Discord bot typically initiates an outbound gateway connection to Discord. Render’s policy describes inbound activity at the hosted service, so it is a reasoned inference—not a Discord-specific guarantee—that the bot’s outbound gateway traffic does not reset the Free web-service idle timer. Render updated its policy on February 24, 2026 so messages arriving through an existing WebSocket connection can delay spin-down; that change does not establish that outbound Discord traffic qualifies. Render’s changelog explains the WebSocket update.

Does pinging your Render app keep it awake?

An external health check that reaches your application may count as inbound traffic while the service is running, and so may affect the idle timer. But a ping is not a supported always-on guarantee: it does not prevent other documented restarts, and a request that arrives after spin-down encounters a cold start of about one minute.

There is also an important exception: requests to /robots.txt while a Free web service is spun down are handled automatically and do not reach the service or wake it. A monitor checking that path will not restart the app. Render documents this exception.

How do I stop my Discord bot from sleeping on Render?

For a bot that must remain available continuously, move it to paid compute. Render says paid compute plans do not spin down. Choose the service type according to what the bot actually does:

  • Paid Background Worker: the closer fit for a process that only maintains its Discord connection and performs bot work. Workers are designed to run continuously without incoming network traffic, but Render does not offer them on Free instances. See Render’s Background Workers documentation and Render’s FAQ.
  • Paid Web Service: consider this if the bot also needs to accept inbound HTTP requests, such as for a dashboard or webhook endpoint. Render describes Web Services as applications that listen for HTTP requests. See Render’s deployment overview.

Check Render’s current plan costs and resources before switching; pricing can change, and no current price is quoted here. The choice also depends on whether the bot needs inbound HTTP and whether you are willing to pay for a continuously running process.

Can I use a Render Background Worker for free?

No. Render does not offer Background Workers on Free instances. A Background Worker is intended for processes that run continuously without receiving incoming network traffic, which makes it a natural service type for a bot that does not serve HTTP. The service type does not make the Free tier available for that workload. Render’s worker documentation outlines the service.

What else should you account for?

  • Monthly Free hours are not always-on time. Render’s documentation lists 750 Free instance hours per workspace per calendar month. A spun-down service does not consume those hours, but using the allowance does not remove the 15-minute idle rule; when the allowance is exhausted, Free web services are suspended until the next month. Render lists Free web-service resources as 0.1 CPU and 512 MB RAM. These are platform limits, not a performance benchmark. See Render’s compute-plan documentation and its Free service documentation.
  • Do not rely on local files or process memory for persistence. Free services may restart at any time, and their filesystems are ephemeral: local changes can be lost on restart, redeploy, or spin-down. Store durable bot state outside the local filesystem. Render documents the Free service limitations.
  • Handle shutdowns and reconnects. Render may send SIGTERM during maintenance and zero-downtime deploy operations. Long-running services should handle graceful shutdowns, and the bot should be able to recover its connection after a restart. Paid compute avoids the Free idle spin-down rule, not every restart. See Render’s platform maintenance guidance.

Render’s 15-minute policy concerns its service lifecycle; it is not a statement about Discord’s own gateway or session rules. The exact reconnect steps depend on the bot’s language, library, and deployment setup.
