For a convertible laptop, the safest way to protect the keyboard in tablet mode depends on whether it detaches or folds beneath the screen. Check the manual for your exact model: some devices disable keyboard input when folded back, but that does not physically protect the keys from dirt, abrasion, or pressure. Detach a removable keyboard when practical, handle a built-in one as the manufacturer directs, and carry the closed device in a well-fitting sleeve or laptop compartment.
First, identify which kind of convertible you have
Convertible designs do not all protect their keyboards the same way. A detachable system lets you remove the keyboard; a 360-degree laptop keeps its keyboard attached and rotates the display over it. Find your exact model and generation in its manual before choosing how to handle it.

- Detachable keyboard: You can take the keyboard off for touch or pen use if the manufacturer supports that use.
- Rotating keyboard: The keyboard stays attached beneath the screen in tablet configuration. Check whether tablet mode disables the keyboard and touchpad, and follow the manufacturer’s handling guidance.
What to do while using the laptop as a tablet
If the keyboard detaches
When extended touch or pen use makes the keyboard unnecessary, detach it if your manufacturer recommends doing so. Microsoft advises detaching a Surface Keyboard or Type Cover when it is not in use for the best 2-in-1 experience, and suggests removing it for long inking or note-taking sessions. Set the detached keyboard on a clean, stable surface where it will not be stepped on, pressed under other items, or exposed to spills.

If the keyboard is built in
Use the manufacturer’s designated tablet mode and confirm how that particular model handles input. For example, Lenovo’s 2025 ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 Gen 10 user guide says the keyboard and pointing device are automatically disabled in stand, tent, and tablet modes. That prevents key presses from registering; it does not mean the keycaps, palm rest, or touchpad are physically shielded from grime, rubbing, or pressure.
Microsoft says a folded-back Type Cover will not register key presses on supported Surface models. That instruction is model-specific: Microsoft’s Type Cover guide says the referenced Type Cover is not compatible with Surface Pro X, Surface Pro 8, or later models. Check compatibility for the exact Surface generation rather than assuming a general rule applies.

Handle the hinge and screen gently
Rotate the display smoothly rather than forcing it. Lenovo cautions that excessive force while rotating the ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 Gen 10 display, or pressing excessively on either upper display corner, could damage the display or hinges. Follow your own device’s instructions and avoid using the keyboard or screen as a leverage point.

When you are not using a detachable keyboard, put it away separately in a clean place. For the computer itself, close it as intended before storage or travel; Microsoft advises against leaving a Surface stored open or folded back for a long time. A correctly sized sleeve or the laptop compartment of a bag adds a layer of protection to the closed device during transport. It is not a cover for an exposed built-in keyboard while you are using the laptop as a tablet.

Choose a sleeve by checking your device’s dimensions and shape, including any unusual hinge or chassis profile. Make sure it is easy to remove before unfolding the computer.

A silicone keyboard cover or improvised rigid panel might seem like a simple way to shield keys that face outward in tablet mode, but there is no universal fit or safety guidance established for built-in convertible keyboards. A cover can interfere with hinge clearance or put pressure on the display when the laptop is folded. Do not use one unless its maker confirms compatibility with your exact device generation and the laptop manufacturer’s guidance allows it.
