For a practical waterproof mid-height comparison, start with the KEEN Targhee III Waterproof Mid and the Merrell Moab 3 Mid Waterproof, then decide by fit, climate and trail conditions. KEEN describes the Targhee’s forefoot as roomy; Merrell lists a Vibram TC5+ outsole and 5 mm lugs on the Moab. Those are useful model-specific details, not proof that one boot will feel better or grip more reliably for you.
KEEN vs. Merrell: compare the boots, not just the brands
Both companies sell multiple hiking-boot models, heights and versions. The comparison below uses two specific waterproof mid-height boots, and the listed specifications apply to the cited men’s models unless otherwise noted. A different generation, gender version or non-waterproof variant may have different details.

| Decision point | KEEN Targhee III Waterproof Mid | Merrell Moab 3 Mid Waterproof |
|---|---|---|
| Forefoot fit | KEEN says its Original Fit offers generous space across the forefoot for toes to splay. This is the company’s fit description, not a guarantee about an individual foot. (KEEN product listing) | Merrell describes a footbed that contours to the foot; the cited listing gives no directly comparable toe-box measurement. (Merrell product listing) |
| Waterproofing | KEEN.DRY waterproof, breathable membrane; the product page also describes PFAS-free water repellency. (KEEN product listing) | Waterproof membrane intended to keep water out while allowing moisture to escape. (Merrell product listing) |
| Outsole and lugs | KEEN.ALL-TERRAIN rubber outsole with 4 mm multi-directional lugs. (KEEN product listing) | Vibram TC5+ outsole with 5 mm lugs. (Merrell product listing) |
| Published weight | 526 g (18.55 oz) per shoe for the cited men’s Targhee III Mid listing. (KEEN product listing) | 495 g per half pair for the cited men’s Moab 3 Mid Waterproof listing. (Merrell product listing) |
| Warranty evidence | KEEN’s North American policy covers qualifying original material and workmanship defects for one year from purchase, subject to terms and exclusions. (KEEN warranty terms) | Not stated in the Merrell product material cited here; no warranty comparison is established. |
The weights use different measurement bases, so they do not support a direct lighter-boot ranking. Lug depth also does not settle traction: rubber compound, tread pattern, wear, surface and conditions matter.
Which boot makes more sense for your hikes?
Start with the Targhee if you need forefoot room
KEEN’s own description of the Targhee III emphasizes space across the forefoot for toes to splay. If narrow-feeling toe boxes bother you, it is a reasonable model to try first. Treat that description as a starting point, not a promise: the only dependable fit check is the exact boot on your foot, with your hiking socks.
#1 Best Overall
- WATERPROOF: KEEN.DRY waterproof breathable membrane keeps your feet dry and comfortable all day long by allowing vapor out without letting water in
- CONSTRUCTION: Direct-attach construction provides long-lasting cushioning and reduces the chance of footwear separating over time, because the best boot is the one you keep wearing
- TRACTION: KEEN.ALL-TERRAIN rubber outsole provides elevated traction in muddy environments and on rocky surfaces; 100% recycled PET laces and breathable mesh lining makes these hiking boots light on your feet and the planet
- COMFORT: Removable Luftcell footbed provides excellent arch support and cradles to the natural contours of the foot; Padded tongue and collar for comfort
- FIT & PROTECTION: KEEN Original Fit gives generous space for toes to spread out; Bruise plate for protection on uneven surfaces; High abrasion rubber toe guard for added durability and protection
Put the Moab on your shortlist for an all-purpose waterproof option
The Moab 3 Mid Waterproof is a candidate if you want a mid-height boot with a waterproof membrane and the listed Vibram TC5+ outsole. Merrell’s 5 mm lug figure is a specification, not evidence of better grip than the Targhee’s 4 mm lugs on every trail. Try both on the surfaces and inclines your intended hikes resemble, if the retailer allows it.
Reconsider waterproofing for frequent hot, dry hikes
Waterproof membranes suit wet, muddy or cool conditions, but waterproofing alone does not determine comfort in heat. KEEN’s hiking guide identifies a Targhee Vent option for hot, humid hikes. The Merrell material cited here does not establish a directly matched hot-weather alternative, so compare current ventilated or non-waterproof models from both brands rather than assuming the waterproof mids are the right choice. What the specifications do—and do not—tell you
The cited men’s Targhee III listing identifies style 1017786, a 5.31 in (135 mm) shaft, a 12 mm heel-to-toe drop, KEEN.DRY membrane and KEEN.ALL-TERRAIN outsole. Those details describe that listing, not all Targhee boots. KEEN also lists a Targhee IV Waterproof Hiking Shoe with glue-free KEEN.FUSION construction, Luftcell cushioning and a KEEN.RUGGED outsole; it is a shoe-height listing, and its construction claims should not be transferred to the Targhee III Mid. (Targhee III listing; Targhee IV listing)

Published weights vary by version and how a brand reports them. The cited women’s Moab 3 Mid Waterproof listing reports 410 g (16.36 oz) per shoe, unlike the men’s listing’s half-pair basis. Compare the same gender version, size and measurement basis before using weight to choose. (Merrell product listings)
How to make the choice in a store
- Choose the exact version first: Targhee III or IV, Moab 3, mid or low height, waterproof or ventilated, and the correct gender/fit listing.
- Try both with the socks you hike in. Check toe space while standing and walking downhill; your toes should not be forced into the front of the boot.
- Walk on an incline or uneven surface if the retailer permits it. Look for heel movement, pressure points and secure footing rather than picking by lug depth alone.
- Match the boot to your usual weather. For frequent hot, dry hikes, include non-waterproof options in the comparison.
- Check the current model details and the warranty that applies in your country and through your seller before buying.
Warranty and evidence limits
KEEN’s North American footwear policy states a one-year period for defects in original materials and workmanship from the original purchase date. It requires proof of purchase and has conditions and exclusions; normal wear and fit or comfort concerns are not the same as manufacturing defects. This is a regional policy, not a global promise. (KEEN warranty terms)
Rank #4
- MATERIAL & CONSCIOUSLY CREATED: Durable premium leather; KEEN sources hides from Leather Working Group certified tanneries; Environmentally preferred DWR helps prevent leather from drying out
- WATERPROOF & TRACTION: KEEN.DRY waterproof breathable membrane keeps feet dry in wet terrains; 4mm multi direction lugs provide optimal grip for sure footing in the most rugged terrain
- SUPPORT & COMFORT: External stability shank offers lightweight support for improved mobility on uneven surfaces; S3 heel technology helps dissipate shock with each step; Cushioned collar reduces irritation and discomfort around ankle
- FIT & INSOLE: Removable footbed with arch support forms to the natural contours of the foot; KEEN Original Fit gives generous space for toes to spread out
- CARE TIPS: KEEN recommends gently brushing the boot with a soft bristle brush or hand towel to remove loose dirt and then using a leather cleaner and conditioner to extend the upper’s life; Stains can be treated by lightly rubbing a gum eraser
The cited material does not establish Merrell warranty terms, so it cannot support declaring a warranty winner. Nor does it provide an independent lab comparison, long-term durability trial or controlled head-to-head hiking test. Manufacturer specifications can narrow a shortlist, but they cannot establish which boot will be more comfortable, durable, waterproof or grippy for every hiker.
