What “better” means in this comparison
A file manager is used for more than opening a folder. Everyday work usually includes finding a document, checking what it is before opening it, moving files between locations, organizing removable storage, connecting to a server, and occasionally inspecting permissions or metadata.
Dolphin and Files can both handle local storage, tabs, removable devices, and network locations. The meaningful differences are how much control each exposes and how many actions can be performed without leaving the current window.

| Open a terminal in the current folder | Dolphin | An integrated Terminal panel can be enabled, with a command to open a terminal at the current location. |
| Preview a file during routine browsing | GNOME Files | Pressing the space bar opens a documented quick preview before you open, copy, or delete the item. |
| Simple path and bookmark navigation | GNOME Files | The path bar and sidebar bookmarks keep common locations visible without exposing many controls. |
| Search by filename | Both | Files searches in or below the current folder; Dolphin searches filenames and can also search file contents. |
| Remote and cloud locations | Depends on the protocol | Both support remote workflows, but Files explicitly documents FTP, SSH, Windows shares, and WebDAV while Dolphin’s support depends on the KDE and distribution setup. |
GNOME Files: the focused browsing workflow
Navigation with a path bar and sidebar
Files is designed around a direct folder-browsing flow. The path bar lets you move through the current location and enter a textual path when you know where you want to go. The sidebar keeps frequently used places available as bookmarks, reducing repeated navigation through the directory tree.
This approach suits people who usually work in one folder at a time: open a location, find an item, preview it, and perform an action from the same window. It exposes fewer configuration choices than Dolphin, which can make the basic workflow easier to learn.
Tabs for related locations
Files can open folders in tabs. Tabs are useful when you need to keep a downloads folder, a project directory, and a destination such as an external drive available in one window, even though Files does not provide Dolphin’s dedicated two-pane split workflow.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Filename search where you are working
Typing a filename while viewing a folder starts a search in that folder or below it. This is useful when you remember the name or part of the name but not the exact subfolder. It is a location-focused search rather than a promise that every file on every mounted volume will be indexed or searched.
Space-bar preview
Select a file and press the space bar to preview it before opening, copying, or deleting it. That small interaction is valuable for photographs, PDFs, audio, and other files whose names do not tell you enough. The preview helps prevent acting on the wrong item without launching a separate application.
External disks and network shares
GNOME Help describes Files as handling local files, external disks, file servers, and network shares. Its topic documentation specifically covers FTP, SSH, Windows shares, and WebDAV. The exact connection experience still depends on credentials, network permissions, installed support, and the server itself.

KDE Dolphin: control for file-heavy work
Three view modes and per-folder settings
Dolphin documents icon, compact, and details views. Details view can show size and modification time, and you can add columns for other information. Additional metadata can include file type, rating, tags, comments, permissions, and owner.
Recommended Free Tools
View settings are remembered separately for each folder by default. That lets a photo directory use large icons while a source-code directory uses a dense details layout. It also means a folder can appear different from the last folder you visited, so users who prefer one global layout may need to adjust the settings deliberately.
Split view for two-folder operations
Dolphin’s split view displays two different folders in one window. Drag and drop between the panes, or use the documented commands to copy or move selected items to the inactive pane. This is the clearest practical advantage for routine file transfers: the source and destination remain visible, so you do not need to remember a path or switch between windows.
Tabs, panels, and an integrated terminal
Dolphin supports multiple tabs and reopening a closed tab. Optional panels include Places, Information, Folders, and Terminal. The Terminal panel opens a shell in the current folder, which is useful when a graphical operation needs a command-line follow-up such as checking a filename, running a script, or using a development tool.
These controls make Dolphin adaptable, but they also add choices. A new user may need to decide which panels, view mode, and toolbar actions belong in the normal layout.
Search and previews
Dolphin can search filenames or file contents from the current folder or everywhere, depending on the selected search scope and available indexing. Its previews can use the actual file contents, and preview behavior is configurable. GNOME Files has the more immediately recognizable space-bar gesture; Dolphin offers more surrounding configuration.

Storage, remote files, and plugins
KDE describes Dolphin as a manager for hard drives, USB sticks, SD cards, other storage, remote files, and cloud files. Plugins can extend behavior. Whether a particular remote protocol or plugin works out of the box depends on your distribution and installed components.
Task-by-task comparison
Opening and organizing local files
Both applications cover the fundamentals: create folders, rename items, delete or send them to trash, and work with mounted storage. Files keeps the interface centered on navigation and common actions. Dolphin gives you more ways to expose information and arrange the workspace.
Choose Files when you want the file manager to stay out of the way. Choose Dolphin when folder organization is a substantial part of your work and you want visible type, size, dates, permissions, or tags without opening a separate properties dialog.

Moving or copying between locations
Dolphin is the stronger fit when this is a frequent operation. Enable split view, open the source in one pane and the destination in the other, select the items, then drag them across or use the copy/move command targeting the inactive pane.
In Files, you can still use tabs, separate windows, drag and drop, or cut and paste. The difference is that the destination is not presented as a persistent second pane, so the workflow involves more switching or navigation.
Finding a file
Use Files when your search is naturally tied to the current folder tree and you want to start by typing the name. Use Dolphin when you may need a broader search or want to search inside file contents as well as filenames. Search results can still be limited by permissions, mounted volumes, indexing, and the search scope you selected.

Checking an item before acting
Files makes the check explicit: select the item and press the space bar for a preview. Dolphin can display previews and metadata, but the exact presentation depends on enabled preview and information settings. If a quick visual confirmation is central to your workflow, Files has the simpler documented interaction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesInspecting metadata and permissions
Dolphin’s details view and additional columns are useful when dates, sizes, ownership, ratings, tags, or permissions determine what you do next. Files also provides file properties and permissions, but its everyday browsing interface is less centered on persistent metadata columns.
Using a terminal alongside the file manager
Dolphin is the natural choice if you routinely alternate between graphical file operations and shell commands. Its Terminal panel opens in the current folder, avoiding a separate terminal window and manual directory changes. Files can coexist with a terminal application, but the terminal is not documented as an embedded Files panel.
Connecting to a server or share
Files explicitly documents FTP, SSH, Windows shares, and WebDAV access. Dolphin documents remote and cloud files and integrates with KDE’s broader file-access framework. Before choosing on this criterion, identify the protocol your organization uses and verify that your distribution includes the needed backend and authentication support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose by workflow
Choose GNOME Files if these statements sound like you
- You prefer a clean window with a small number of visible decisions.
- You navigate by bookmarks and a path bar more often than by a detailed directory tree.
- You preview items frequently with the keyboard before opening or deleting them.
- You usually work in one folder at a time and use tabs for a few related locations.
- Your remote work uses a protocol documented by GNOME, such as SSH, FTP, Windows shares, or WebDAV.
Choose KDE Dolphin if these statements sound like you
- You regularly copy or move files between two known folders.
- You want split view, tabs, and optional panels in one application.
- You rely on sizes, dates, permissions, owners, tags, ratings, or other metadata while browsing.
- You want to open a terminal in the current folder.
- You expect to tune views and behavior for different directories.
- You sometimes need filename and file-content searches with a selectable scope.
Practical workflows
Move a project directory to another drive in Dolphin
- Mount the destination drive and open Dolphin.
- Open the source directory in one pane.
- Enable split view and open the destination directory in the other pane.
- Select the project directory.
- Drag it to the destination pane, or use the command that copies or moves the selection to the inactive pane.
- Check the destination and resolve any overwrite or permission prompt before closing the tab.
The advantage is visibility: both paths remain on screen while the operation is chosen.
Preview and find an item in GNOME Files
- Open the folder or bookmarked location.
- Type part of the filename to search in or below the current folder.
- Select a result.
- Press the space bar to preview it.
- Open, copy, move, or delete it only after confirming that it is the intended item.
Set up a remote location
- Identify the server protocol: FTP, SSH, a Windows share, WebDAV, or another supported method.
- Confirm the server address, account name, and required credentials with the administrator.
- Use the file manager’s network or remote-location interface.
- Test listing a directory and transferring a small, noncritical file.
- If the connection fails, check protocol spelling, firewall rules, permissions, VPN requirements, and whether your distribution installed the relevant backend.
Versions, packaging, and what the documentation does not prove
KDE’s application page lists Dolphin 26.08.2 dated October 8, 2026, and says Linux installation is available through AppStream stores or a distribution package manager. Your distribution may ship a different release, backport features, change defaults, or omit optional components.
Best Value
The GNOME Help pages used for the Files workflow do not identify a matching application version. Do not assume that a feature label, keyboard shortcut, or remote-protocol behavior is identical across every GNOME or distribution release.
Official documentation describes capabilities; it does not establish that one application is faster, uses fewer resources, or is easier for a statistically typical user. Startup time, search speed, thumbnail generation, indexing, filesystem type, storage hardware, and desktop integration all affect those outcomes.
Common pitfalls and fixes
“The second folder is not visible in Dolphin”
Enable split view and open the destination in the inactive pane. If the layout is crowded, close optional panels such as Information or Folders temporarily rather than switching to another window.
“Files search does not find an item”
Confirm that you are searching from the folder that contains the item or a parent folder, that the volume is mounted, and that permissions allow access. A filename search in the current folder tree is not automatically a complete search of every disk.
“A network share opens but transfers fail”
Separate connection from write permission. You may be able to list a directory while lacking permission to create, replace, or delete files. Check the server account, share permissions, path, and protocol-specific requirements.
“Dolphin shows too much information”
Switch from details to icon or compact view, hide optional panels, and adjust columns. Because Dolphin can remember settings per folder, change the setting in the folder where the clutter is occurring.
“A preview is unavailable”
Preview support depends on the file type, installed components, and application settings. Try the file’s associated application, verify that previews are enabled, and do not treat a missing thumbnail as evidence that the file is damaged.

For a straightforward GNOME-style browsing experience, GNOME Files is the better fit. For two-folder transfers, configurable layouts, persistent metadata, panels, and an embedded terminal, KDE Dolphin is the better fit. Both are capable everyday file managers; the choice should follow the operations you perform repeatedly, not an unsupported claim that one is universally faster or easier.
