KB5121003: What to do if your Windows 11 PC won’t shut down

Windows 11’s August 2026 KB5121003 update is linked to a shutdown-fix claim, but Microsoft documents a different issue: certain games affected by RGB-related drivers.

Not according to Microsoft’s published notes. The likely update behind this claim is KB5121003, released August 11, 2026, for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. Microsoft documents a fix involving certain games and RGB-related drivers, but does not list a general shutdown or power-button fix. A secondary summary attributed to XDA Developers says the update addressed PCs whose screens went dark while fans kept running; that claim is not confirmed by Microsoft’s release notes.

What does KB5121003 officially fix?

Microsoft describes KB5121003 as providing security improvements and documents a problem affecting some games on systems with certain RGB-capable peripherals or internal components. Symptoms can include a game becoming unresponsive, closing unexpectedly, an EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION error, or an unexpected device restart. Microsoft says the resolution blocks the inpoutx64 driver from loading on affected devices. Microsoft’s KB5121003 notes do not describe a broad Windows shutdown or power-button repair.

Where did the shutdown-fix claim come from?

A daily.dev page attributing the claim to XDA Developers summarizes a scenario in which a PC appears to shut down, but the screen is off while fans continue running, leading the user to force a shutdown. The summary says Windows power-plan settings were involved and describes a staged rollout. The underlying XDA article text was not available in the material reviewed, and Microsoft’s notes do not corroborate those details. Treat them as a secondary account, not as an established description of what KB5121003 fixes.

How can you check whether your PC has KB5121003?

  1. Open Settings > System > About and check the Windows edition, version, and OS build. The relevant releases are Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2.

  2. Compare the build with Microsoft’s Windows 11 release history. KB5121003 corresponds to build 26100.9168 for version 24H2 and build 26200.9168 for version 25H2, according to Microsoft’s release information.

  3. To check for the update, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Microsoft also lists Windows Update for Business and the Microsoft Update Catalog as distribution channels for KB5121003. See Microsoft’s update page for the available channels.

Does the update’s documented fix apply to every PC?

The driver-block mitigation is for the documented game issue, not a confirmed remedy for a PC that will not shut down. Microsoft says it is applied automatically on affected consumer devices and business devices that are not managed by IT. Enterprise-managed devices do not receive the mitigation automatically. That distinction concerns the game-and-driver issue; it does not establish that the update fixes shutdown behavior.

What to conclude if your PC still needs a forced shutdown

Installing KB5121003 may be appropriate for an eligible Windows 11 system, but Microsoft’s documentation is not evidence that it will resolve a screen-off, fans-running shutdown problem. The available secondary summary is not enough to verify that the reported behavior was caused by a power-plan setting or that this update corrected it. If shutdown trouble continues, record the exact Windows version and build and describe the symptoms to your IT administrator or support technician rather than assuming this update is the fix.
