Normalerweise nein. Ein gewöhnliches HDMI-Kabel überträgt Bild, Ton und Steuerdaten, liefert aber nicht genug Leistung für den Betrieb eines Monitors oder Fernsehers. Ein tragbarer Bildschirm benötigt zusätzlich USB-Strom oder ein Netzteil. Nur spezielle Standards wie MHL oder ein kompatibler USB-C-Anschluss können Bild und Strom in einer Verbindung kombinieren.
Was HDMI tatsächlich überträgt
HDMI ist in erster Linie eine Audio-/Video-Schnittstelle. Neben digitalen Bild- und Tonsignalen überträgt sie unter anderem Erkennungs-, Steuer- und Kopierschutzdaten. Am Anschluss steht außerdem eine begrenzte Hilfsversorgung für die Schnittstellenelektronik bereit. Diese reicht nicht für Panel, Hintergrundbeleuchtung und Signalverarbeitung eines Bildschirms.

Auch HDMI ARC und eARC ändern daran nichts: Sie sind Audio-Rückkanäle zum Verstärker, keine Stromversorgungsstandards für den Bildschirm. Die HDMI-Dokumentation beschreibt ARC als Rückkanal für Audiodaten (HDMI-Spezifikation).

Die aktuelle Spezifikationsübersicht führt HDMI 2.2 als neueste aufgeführte HDMI-Spezifikation (HDMI-Spezifikationen). Eine höhere HDMI-Version bedeutet jedoch nicht automatisch, dass ein Monitor über das Kabel betrieben werden kann.

Warum HDMI nicht als Netzteil für einen Monitor genügt
Ein Bildschirm benötigt Energie für das LCD- oder OLED-Panel, die LED-Hintergrundbeleuchtung, den Signalprozessor und je nach Modell zusätzlich Lautsprecher, USB-Hub, Kamera, Touch-Funktionen oder Netzwerk. Die kleine HDMI-Hilfsversorgung ist für Erkennung und Signalelektronik gedacht, nicht für diese Betriebsleistung.
Darum gilt die praktische Regel: HDMI liefert das Bild; USB oder ein Netzteil liefert den Strom. Ein PC, Laptop, Receiver, Blu-ray-Player, Streaming-Gerät oder eine Spielekonsole kann den Monitor normalerweise nicht über seinen HDMI-Ausgang mit Betriebsstrom versorgen.
Die Ausnahme: HDMI Cable Power
HDMI Cable Power versorgt aktive HDMI-Kabel mit eigener Elektronik, etwa für lange Strecken oder anspruchsvolle Hochgeschwindigkeitssignale. Laut HDMI Licensing Administrator müssen sowohl die HDMI-Quelle als auch das Kabel diese Funktion unterstützen (HDMI Cable Power).

Die Energie fließt dabei an die Elektronik im Kabel, nicht an den Fernseher oder Monitor. HDMI Cable Power ersetzt weder ein Netzteil noch USB Power Delivery und ist keine allgemeine Eigenschaft jedes HDMI-2.x-Anschlusses.
Worauf bei aktiven Kabeln zu achten ist
- Viele aktive oder optische HDMI-Kabel sind richtungsgebunden. Das mit „Source“ markierte Ende gehört an die Signalquelle.
- Bei falscher Orientierung funktioniert die Verbindung laut HDMI Licensing Administrator normalerweise nicht, verursacht aber keinen Schaden.
- Unterstützt die Quelle HDMI Cable Power nicht, kann das Kabel einen zusätzlichen USB-Micro-B- oder USB-C-Stromanschluss benötigen.
- Die Stromversorgung betrifft weiterhin nur das Kabel; der Bildschirm braucht seine eigene Versorgung.
Tragbarer Monitor mit HDMI: die richtige Verkabelung
Ein tragbarer Monitor kann über HDMI verwendet werden, aber nicht über HDMI allein. Typische Anschlüsse trennen Signal und Energie:
Bildquelle ── HDMI ──> Monitor USB-Netzteil, Laptop oder Powerbank ── USB-C/USB-A ──> Monitor
Je nach Modell erfolgt die Stromzufuhr über USB-C, Micro-USB, USB-A oder ein separates Netzteil. Der USB-Port muss die vom Hersteller geforderte Leistung liefern. Ein zu schwacher Port kann Flackern, Abschaltungen oder eine begrenzte Helligkeit verursachen. Spannung, Stromstärke, Stecker und Leistungsangabe müssen zu Monitor und Netzteil passen.

USB-C: Bild und Strom über ein Kabel
Die Lösung, die viele Nutzer eigentlich suchen, ist ein geeigneter USB-C-Monitor. USB-C kann Bild über HDMI Alt Mode oder – bei modernen PCs häufiger – über DisplayPort Alt Mode beziehungsweise USB4 übertragen. Gleichzeitig kann USB Power Delivery den Monitor versorgen oder einen Laptop laden. Welche Funktionen tatsächlich vorhanden sind, legt der Hersteller für das jeweilige Produkt fest (HDMI über USB-C; Lenovo: USB-C- und HDMI-Verbindungen).

Ein Monitor mit USB-C und Power Delivery kann beispielsweise Bild, Daten und Ladeleistung über ein Kabel kombinieren. LG dokumentiert Modelle mit bis zu 90 W USB PD; die konkrete Leistung ist jedoch modellabhängig (LG: USB-PD-Funktion bei Monitoren).

Die USB-C-Buchse allein ist kein Beweis für Video oder Power Delivery. Prüfen Sie Handbuch und Symbole auf beiden Geräten: Videoeingang, DisplayPort- oder HDMI-Alt-Mode, USB PD und die verfügbare Wattzahl müssen ausdrücklich angegeben sein. Auch das Kabel muss für die benötigte Video- und Leistungsfunktion geeignet sein.

MHL als Sonderfall älterer Geräte
Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) wurde für kompatible Smartphones, Tablets, Fernseher, Monitore und Projektoren entwickelt. Bei passenden Geräten konnte eine MHL-Verbindung Audio, Video, Daten und Stromversorgung kombinieren (MHL-Informationen).
MHL ist jedoch nicht gleichbedeutend mit normalem HDMI. Beide Geräte müssen MHL unterstützen, und ein gewöhnlicher HDMI-Port wird durch ein spezielles Kabel nicht nachträglich zu einem MHL-Anschluss. Bei aktuellen Geräten sind USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB4 oder drahtlose Verfahren meist die relevanteren Alternativen.

Fehlerdiagnose
Der Bildschirm bleibt vollständig aus
- Netzteil oder USB-Stromkabel anschließen.
- Bei einem tragbaren Monitor ein Netzteil oder eine Powerbank mit ausreichender Leistung verwenden.
- Kontrollieren, ob der verwendete USB-Port tatsächlich Strom ausgibt.
- Aus dem vorhandenen HDMI-Signal nicht auf eine Betriebsversorgung schließen.
Der Monitor ist an, zeigt aber „Kein Signal“
- Richtigen HDMI-Eingang auswählen.
- HDMI-Kabel und Signalquelle prüfen.
- Auflösung und Bildwiederholrate auf unterstützte Werte setzen.
- Bei USB-C kontrollieren, ob der Port Video ausgibt.
- USB-C-auf-HDMI-Adapter in der vorgesehenen Richtung einsetzen. Solche Adapter arbeiten typischerweise von USB-C-Videoausgang zu HDMI-Eingang, nicht umgekehrt (Lenovo).
Ein aktives HDMI-Kabel funktioniert nicht
- „Source“- und „Display“-Ende korrekt anschließen.
- Prüfen, ob die Quelle HDMI Cable Power unterstützt.
- Vorhandenen USB-Stromanschluss am Kabel versorgen.
- Kabellänge, Auflösung und erforderliche Bandbreite abgleichen.
Der Laptop wird über HDMI nicht geladen
HDMI überträgt keine Ladeleistung. Für Laden und Bild über ein Kabel benötigen Sie einen USB-C-Monitor mit Videoeingang und Power Delivery. Prüfen Sie, ob die abgegebene Leistung für den Laptop genügt; bei einer reinen HDMI-Verbindung bleibt das separate Laptop-Netzteil erforderlich.
