A KaiOS phone can offer features such as Wi-Fi, 4G, GPS, Bluetooth, a camera and an app catalog, but those platform capabilities do not guarantee that every handset has the same apps, carrier support or updates. What is KaiOS?
KaiOS is software built for phones that retain familiar feature-phone hardware and controls while adding mobile connectivity and selected online services. KaiOS lists Wi-Fi, 4G, GPS, Bluetooth, cameras and access to apps among the platform’s features, and provides a directory of KaiOS-powered devices on its features page.

The aim is not to make a keypad phone identical to a touchscreen smartphone. Rather, KaiOS combines basic phone functions and physical controls with some internet-connected capabilities. Which functions are actually available depends on the phone, its software version, and the services supported in its market.

What can you do with a KaiOS phone?
At the platform level, KaiOS describes support for connectivity and hardware features including Wi-Fi, 4G, GPS, Bluetooth and cameras, alongside an app catalog. These describe possibilities for KaiOS-powered devices—not a checklist that every model necessarily meets. Confirm the specifications of the individual phone before relying on a particular feature.

KaiOS advertises “1500+ apps” on its features page, but the page does not date that figure. It should not be read as a current, audited count or as a guarantee that a particular app is available on a particular phone. The catalog can vary with software version and device.
Does WhatsApp work on KaiOS?
It depends on the KaiOS version. KaiOS’s help pages, both updated September 3, 2026, say WhatsApp is supported on devices running KaiOS 2.5.1 and above, but is unavailable on KaiOS 3.0. See the guidance for WhatsApp on KaiOS and apps on KaiOS 3.0.
Before buying, verify the exact model’s installed version and confirm that the service remains available for that handset. “KaiOS phone” alone is not enough to establish WhatsApp compatibility.
What apps and services are available?
There is no single app list that applies to every KaiOS phone. Availability depends on the OS version and device, so check the phone’s own app catalog and the service’s current compatibility information for the model you are considering.

Google documented Google Assistant integration on KaiOS phones in a 2019 post, including a feature that could let a user operate the phone interface in one language and Assistant in another. That is historical evidence of integration, not proof that Assistant is currently available on every KaiOS handset. Check the specific phone for current support.
A 2020 GSMA training module also used KaiOS devices to teach digital skills, with guided use of services such as WhatsApp. It illustrates the platform’s role in digital-skills education; it does not establish current app availability.
What is the difference between KaiOS 2.5 and 3.0?
The clearest practical difference established by KaiOS’s current help pages is WhatsApp compatibility: KaiOS says it works on version 2.5.1 and above, but is unavailable on 3.0. This is a reason to check version numbers rather than assume a higher version includes every app supported by an earlier one.

Version labels do not establish that a phone can be upgraded from one branch to another, or that two phones on the same branch have identical apps and services. KaiOS’s developer pages for 3.0 say that version is no longer actively maintained and direct developers to Smart Feature Phone 2.5 documentation. The 3.0 documentation describes apps built with web technologies such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript running in Gecko; treat this as a description of that documented version, not every KaiOS release. Is a KaiOS phone a smartphone?
KaiOS phones are best understood as smart feature phones. They combine feature-phone form factors and physical controls with connectivity and selected apps. That makes them more capable than a phone limited to calls and texts, but it does not make them equivalent to a full smartphone ecosystem. If you depend on a particular app, service, carrier or update schedule, check support for the exact model instead of inferring it from the operating system’s name.
What should you check before choosing a KaiOS phone?
Platform-level features do not settle the questions that matter for a particular purchase. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and support information for the exact phone and the country where you will use it.
- Version and updates: Find the installed KaiOS version and whether the manufacturer offers updates for that model. Do not assume an upgrade path from a version number alone.
- Essential apps: Verify each app or service you need against the handset’s version and current service guidance. WhatsApp’s version distinction is especially important.
- Network fit: Confirm the phone’s cellular bands, regional availability and compatibility with your carrier.
- Controls and hardware: Check whether it is a bar or flip phone and whether its keypad, screen and input method suit how you intend to use it. Verify Wi-Fi, GPS, camera and Bluetooth on that model rather than assuming all are present.
- Long-term support: Ask the manufacturer or carrier what support the specific handset receives, and consider service and replacement-part availability.
KaiOS says it provides at least three years of support for versions 2.6.x and 4.x, including OS-component security updates, regulatory compliance and conditional deployment of new features; extended support is governed by a specific license agreement. This is a platform-level statement, not a model-specific promise. Confirm the actual support commitment with the phone’s manufacturer or carrier.
