1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor live-only chat fan-out, Redis Pub/Sub is a straightforward fit when every WebSocket gateway serving a room subscribes to its channel and the product can tolerate missed messages during disconnects. Choose Kafka when chat events also need retained history, replay, or independent readers such as moderation, analytics, and archival. The deciding question is not which broker is universally faster; it is what the system must do when a subscriber is away.
How do Kafka and Redis Pub/Sub differ for livestream chat?
Redis Pub/Sub broadcasts messages to active channel or pattern subscribers. It is not a chat log: its delivery is at-most-once, so a subscriber disconnected when a message is published misses it permanently. Redis documents chat and WebSocket fan-out as use cases, while recommending durable state in keys or a Stream when events cannot be lost: Redis Pub/Sub documentation.

Kafka stores records in partitioned topics according to configured retention. Consumers track positions and can read retained records again; a record is not removed just because one consumer has read it. Kafka consumer groups provide distinct logical readers, while members within one group divide partition work. See Kafka concepts and terminology and Kafka consumer documentation.

| Decision | Redis Pub/Sub | Kafka |
|---|---|---|
| Subscriber disconnects | Messages published while it is offline are not replayed. [Redis] | A consumer can resume from its position while records remain within topic retention. [Kafka concepts] |
| Fan-out shape | Active channel and pattern subscribers receive live broadcasts; Redis describes WebSocket fan-out across server nodes. [Redis] | Each consumer group can read the topic independently; members of a group split partitions. [Kafka consumers] |
| Ordering | Redis describes messages as published in order through Pub/Sub. [Redis] | Ordering is guaranteed within a partition, not as one total order across a multi-partition topic. [Kafka concepts] |
| Replay | Pub/Sub has no retained message history. [Redis] | Retained records can be reread, subject to retention configuration. [Kafka concepts] |
| Operational shape | Redis positions Pub/Sub as lightweight when persistence and replay are unnecessary. [Redis] | Partitions, replication, retention, and consumer groups add operational surface; team experience and existing infrastructure matter. [Kafka concepts] |
| Comparative performance | Redis documentation mentions a “sub-millisecond hop,” but the cited passage does not specify workload, topology, percentile, hardware, or test date. [Redis] | No apples-to-apples latency result is established by the cited official materials. |
Can Redis Pub/Sub handle livestream chat?
Yes, if “handle” means distributing live messages to connected viewers through application servers, and losing a message during a gateway disconnect is acceptable. A practical arrangement is to publish each room’s event to a Redis channel and have each WebSocket gateway serving viewers in that room subscribe and forward messages to its local sessions. This is an architectural inference from Redis’s documented broadcast and WebSocket use cases, not a tested reference deployment.

That pattern separates the broker’s job from the viewer connections: a gateway subscribes once for a room and fans the received event out to its local WebSocket sessions. Channel naming, authorization, room membership changes, and gateway lifecycle are application concerns; Pub/Sub itself does not provide a retained transcript or reconnect catch-up.
What happens to chat messages when a subscriber disconnects?
Redis Pub/Sub offers at-most-once delivery. If a gateway is disconnected at publication time, it cannot recover that message from the channel after reconnecting. Treat this as an explicit product decision: it may be acceptable for a fast-moving chat where a brief gap is tolerable, but not where users expect a complete transcript or moderators need an auditable event history.

If viewers must catch up, keep the authoritative chat history elsewhere and fetch missing messages after reconnect; Redis recommends durable state in keys or a Stream rather than relying on Pub/Sub for events that cannot be lost. A hybrid design can use durable storage or a stream for history and Pub/Sub as the live wake-up/fan-out path. The consistency strategy for writing to both is application-specific, so avoid assuming two writes are automatically atomic.
How do Kafka consumer groups fan out chat events?
Use separate consumer groups for independent jobs that each need the event stream, for example one group for moderation, another for analytics, and another for archival. Each group reads the topic on its own position; within a group, Kafka assigns partitions among members so they share that group’s work. This allows downstream workloads to progress independently rather than competing as members of one shared logical reader.

Kafka’s documentation states that topic events can be read repeatedly while retained, unlike systems that delete a message on consumption: Kafka concepts and terminology. Retention is bounded by topic configuration, so Kafka is not a substitute for defining the history period the product actually needs.
How can you preserve message order per livestream room?
First define the required boundary: order per room, per user, or globally. A global order is often unnecessary for chat, while per-room ordering can matter when viewers and moderation tools need to see a consistent sequence.

In Kafka, records are ordered within a partition, not across all partitions in a topic. Use a stable room identifier as the record key when room-local ordering is required, so records for that room are assigned consistently to a partition. This is a per-room boundary, not a promise of one global ordering across the entire topic; the Kafka documentation describes partition ordering and key-based semantic partitioning in its concepts and terminology and producer documentation. A particularly busy room may concentrate traffic on its partition, so measure the actual workload rather than assuming a universal safe room size or throughput threshold.

Redis Streams are worth evaluating when the team wants to remain in the Redis ecosystem but Pub/Sub’s lack of retention and recovery is too limiting. Redis documents Streams as ordered retained events with consumer groups, acknowledgements, and replay; these are different consumption semantics from Pub/Sub. See Redis Streams documentation.

Streams do not make every application choice disappear: decide how long to retain entries, how consumers acknowledge work, and how reconnecting clients obtain missing chat history. Compare the actual recovery and consumer requirements rather than treating the word “Redis” as meaning the same delivery model across both features.
What should you measure before choosing?
The available documentation describes mechanisms, not a universal break-even volume, latency threshold, cost, or winner. Redis’s “sub-millisecond hop” wording is a vendor claim without enough test detail in the cited passage to predict end-to-end livestream chat latency. Measure a representative deployment under its expected room sizes and traffic patterns.
Quick Recap
- Room size and message rate, including unusually busy rooms.
- Message size and the number of gateways and local WebSocket sessions receiving each room’s traffic.
- What viewers and downstream consumers should see after a disconnect or consumer restart.
- Required ordering boundary, such as per room, and the impact of concentrating a hot room on one Kafka partition.
- Retention duration, replay needs, and the number of independent downstream workloads.
- Operational capacity and existing infrastructure for managing the chosen system.
