JWT vs OAuth2: Which Problem Does Each One Solve?

JWT represents claims in a token; OAuth 2.0 provides a framework for delegated access to protected resources. Learn when each fits and how OAuth can use JWT access tokens.

JWT and OAuth 2.0 solve different problems, so they are not alternatives. JWT is a format for representing claims in a compact token. OAuth 2.0 is an authorization framework for obtaining access to protected resources. Use OAuth when an application needs delegated access to an API; use JWT when a system needs a compact claims format and the parties agree on how to validate it. An OAuth access token can be a JWT, but OAuth does not require that format.

What is the difference between JWT and OAuth 2.0?

The key distinction is format versus framework. A JWT describes how claims—statements such as a subject or other data—are represented in a token. OAuth 2.0 describes how a client obtains and uses authorization to access a protected resource. A JWT by itself does not define an authorization flow, and OAuth does not prescribe JWT as its access-token format.

Question JWT OAuth 2.0
What is it? A compact claims representation format, defined in RFC 7519. An authorization framework, defined in RFC 6749.
What does it mainly do? Represents claims in a token. Defines roles and flows for obtaining access to protected resources.
Does it define the whole authorization process? No. A JWT does not, on its own, define who may issue it, where it may be used, or how a recipient must validate it. Yes. OAuth describes the authorization framework, including clients, authorization servers, resource owners, and resource servers.
Does it require a particular token format? JWT is itself a token format. No. An OAuth access token may be JWT-formatted or opaque to the client.

When should you use OAuth 2.0?

Use OAuth when an application needs an authorization server to grant a client scoped or otherwise limited access to a protected API or resource. For example, an application may need permission to access a user’s resource without handling that user’s password directly. OAuth provides the framework for obtaining and presenting the access token; the resource server decides how to interpret and validate the token it receives.

OAuth is primarily about authorization, not user sign-in. If the goal is federated login, OpenID Connect supplies an identity layer built on OAuth. The IETF’s January 2025 security guidance discusses OAuth’s use as a basis for federated login through OpenID Connect; it does not turn OAuth alone into a login protocol. See RFC 9700.

When should you use JWT?

Use JWT when a system needs claims represented in a compact token and the issuer and recipient have agreed on a profile for issuing, accepting, and validating it. The format alone does not establish that a token is trustworthy: a recipient still needs rules for checking matters such as the issuer, intended recipient, and claims before relying on them.

JWT is not a substitute for deciding authorization policy, handling token misuse, or designing a complete access-control flow. Choosing JWT does not automatically make an application stateless, more secure, or easier to revoke access from; those outcomes depend on the surrounding system.

Can OAuth 2.0 use JWT?

Yes. The two can be combined when the authorization server and resource server support the same JWT access-token profile and validation rules. RFC 9068 defines a JWT profile for OAuth 2.0 access tokens. It is an option, not a requirement for OAuth deployments. OAuth also permits access tokens whose format is opaque to the client.

JWT can also appear in OAuth-related client authentication and authorization grants. RFC 7523 defines profiles for those uses. These are examples of JWT being used within OAuth-related mechanisms, not evidence that JWT and OAuth are competing protocols.

How do you choose between them?

  1. Start with the job. If a client needs authorization to reach a protected resource, use an authorization framework such as OAuth. If the question is how to represent claims in a token, JWT may fit.
  2. Decide whether JWT is actually needed. For OAuth, do not assume the access token must be readable or JWT-formatted. The authorization server and resource server need to agree on how tokens work; the client may treat an access-token string as opaque.
  3. Specify validation and security behavior. If choosing JWT access tokens, define the supported profile and how recipients verify tokens before trusting their claims. Token format alone is not an authorization policy.
  4. Use current OAuth security guidance. The IETF published RFC 9700 as its OAuth 2.0 Security Best Current Practice in January 2025. It updates security advice, deprecates modes considered less secure or insecure, and recommends sender-constraining access tokens where feasible, including mutual TLS or DPoP.

Common misconceptions

  • “JWT is an authorization protocol.” It is a claims representation format; it does not define an authorization flow by itself.
  • “OAuth always uses JWT.” OAuth does not mandate a token format. A deployment may use JWT access tokens or opaque ones.
  • “A JWT is trustworthy because it is a JWT.” The recipient must apply the agreed validation rules and determine whether the token is appropriate to trust for the requested resource.
  • “OAuth is a login protocol.” OAuth is primarily for authorization. OpenID Connect adds an identity layer for federated sign-in.
