A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11After setting up a Roku player or Roku TV, check these nine settings to make sure updates, picture, privacy, ads, data use, accessibility, the home screen, and audio work the way you want. Menu paths and available options vary by device, software version, and app, so treat the paths below as starting points and look for the equivalent setting on your model. Checking a setting does not mean you need to change it.
1. Check for a software update
Roku setup may install updates automatically, but you can also check manually: go to Settings > System > Software update > Check now. Roku recommends updating the device and app when a streaming app feature is not working. Roku Support explains how to turn captions on in a streaming app; setup guidance for the Express 4K also covers updates: Roku Express 4K setup.

Roku Support states in its Express 4K setup guidance that “Roku never charges activation or support fees.”
2. Confirm the display type and 4K/HDR support
Open Settings > Display type or the equivalent display option and check that the selected mode matches your TV. A Roku’s maximum resolution or HDR capability alone does not guarantee that the whole setup can display it: the TV, Roku model, HDMI cable, soundbar or receiver in the signal path, and the TV’s HDMI input all need to support the desired format. Roku’s Express 4K setup guidance and HDR troubleshooting guidance describe these compatibility considerations.
#1 Best Overall
- HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
If HDR looks wrong or a component does not support the selected format, try a supported lower mode, such as 4K without HDR or 1080p. The practical choice is the highest mode the entire HDMI chain handles reliably, rather than the highest mode listed for the Roku alone.
3. Decide whether to enable Automatic Content Recognition
On supported devices, look under Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience for Automatic Content Recognition (ACR). Roku says ACR supports features such as More Ways to Watch. This is a privacy choice: Roku says data collected or used while ACR was enabled is retained even if you later turn it off. Review Roku’s privacy information for ACR before deciding whether the related recognition features are worth enabling for you.

4. Review personalized ads and sensitive ad categories
Roku provides controls to restrict certain sensitive ad categories and hide some home-screen ads. Their scope is limited: the controls apply to non-video banner ads in Roku menus and screensavers, not to all video advertising. Category preferences require Personalized Ads to be enabled. Check the available controls in your device’s privacy or advertising settings and consult Roku’s ad preference guidance for the current options.
5. Choose whether Bandwidth Saver suits your viewing
Find the setting at Settings > Network > Bandwidth saver. Roku says it prompts you after four hours without activity from the remote or mobile app; if you do nothing, playback stops. That can help reduce idle streaming when you have an internet data cap, but it may interrupt long passive viewing. Leave it on if avoiding unattended data use matters more; turn it off if uninterrupted playback is more important. See Roku’s Bandwidth Saver explanation.
6. Check captions in Roku settings and in each app
For Roku-level caption options, go to Settings > Accessibility > Captions mode. Caption behavior may also be controlled from the streaming app’s playback or settings menu, and captions appear only when the program supports them. If captions do not appear, check both places rather than assuming the device setting controls every app. Roku explains the distinction in its app caption instructions and accessibility settings guidance.

7. Check the Screen reader
Accessibility > Screen reader controls spoken navigation on supported Roku devices and software versions. It is useful for spoken menus if you want that assistance; if menus unexpectedly start speaking, this is the first setting to check. Roku also documents a shortcut: press the remote’s Options/Star button four times to toggle the feature. Availability and labels can vary by device and software. See Roku accessibility guidance and its Screen reader instructions.
8. Make the Home Screen work for you
Roku’s Home Screen settings may include tile size, recommendation rows, and Quick Access visibility. The available controls and screen layout differ across devices, so do not expect every Roku player or Roku TV to show identical options. Look for Settings > Home screen or the closest equivalent on your device. Roku addresses why layouts differ in its Home Screen guidance.

9. Compare Volume mode with Off
On supported devices, check Settings > Audio > Volume mode or open the playback Options menu. Leveling or night modes can make loudness more consistent or reduce sudden volume changes, but Roku warns that volume modes can convert some surround formats to stereo. If you use a soundbar or receiver, compare the available modes with Off and choose based on both listening comfort and the audio format you want to preserve. See Roku’s volume mode guidance.
