JSI Tip 6090: NewSID Freeware—Is It Still Available?

NewSID is retired and unavailable from Microsoft. Learn what the old Sysinternals tool did and why Microsoft points Windows image deployment to Sysprep.

NewSID was a free Sysinternals utility for changing a Windows computer’s SID after cloning, but Microsoft has retired it and says it is no longer available for download. Microsoft says it does not support Windows images prepared with NewSID; its supported approach is to prepare images with Sysprep.

What NewSID did

NewSID was a Win32 utility documented by Mark Russinovich for Windows deployments involving cloned disks. It generated a computer SID and replaced references to the previous computer SID in the Registry and file security descriptors. It also offered SID synchronization and an option to change the computer name.

Microsoft’s NewSID v4.10 documentation, published November 1, 2006, described the computer SID as using three 32-bit subauthorities and said NewSID generated a random 96-bit value for them. That is a description of the historical tool, not current Windows deployment guidance. Read Microsoft’s NewSID documentation.

Is NewSID still available to download?

No. Microsoft’s current notice says NewSID “has been retired and is no longer available for download.” The Sysinternals blog announced its end of life in 2009. Because Microsoft no longer distributes or supports it, an archived copy should not be treated as a supported Windows deployment tool. See the Sysinternals end-of-life announcement.

NewSID or Sysprep: which should you use?

Approach Purpose described Microsoft support status Availability and guidance
NewSID Historically changed a computer SID after cloning an installed system; could also rename the computer. Microsoft says it does not support images prepared with NewSID. Retired and unavailable for download; the NewSID page is historical documentation.
Sysprep Preparing Windows images for deployment. Microsoft says it supports images prepared with Sysprep. Consult current Windows deployment documentation for instructions that match your Windows version and deployment scenario.

These are not interchangeable recommendations in Microsoft’s documentation: it explicitly distinguishes unsupported NewSID-prepared images from supported Sysprep-prepared images. The 2006 NewSID page does not provide a current, version-specific Sysprep procedure. For operational steps, use Microsoft’s current Sysprep overview and follow the guidance for the Windows edition and deployment workflow you use.

Why the old instructions are not a safe procedure today

The NewSID documentation required administrative privileges, advised making a full backup, and warned that use was at the user’s own risk. It also said IISAdmin had to be stopped before running NewSID on a system using that service. Its historical automatic command was newsid /a [newname]; that syntax documents the retired utility and is not a current recommendation.

Russinovich’s 2006 page also cautioned that NewSID had not been tested for every cloning option and stated: “Regarding SIDs, Microsoft does not support images that are prepared using NewSID, we only support images that are prepared using SysPrep.” Those statements explain the historical tool’s limits; they are not a substitute for deployment instructions written for your current Windows version.
