JPEG XL (JXL) is a modern raster image format that can store images in lossy or lossless form, support features such as animation and progressive display, and even preserve an existing JPEG so its exact original file can be reconstructed. It can improve website image delivery in the right circumstances, but it does not make every image smaller or work identically in every browser. Compare it with AVIF and WebP using your own images, and serve a fallback while browser support remains version-dependent.
What JPEG XL is
JPEG XL is a standardized image coding system and file format, specified as ISO/IEC 18181. The JPEG standards family describes lossy and lossless encoding, an extensible container with metadata support, and a free, open-source, royalty-free reference implementation. The JPEG Committee’s overview lists web delivery and professional photography among its use cases.

JXL is not limited to ordinary still photographs. Its feature set includes alpha transparency, animation, layers, thumbnails, progressive coding, HDR, wide colour gamut and high bit depth. A file may be represented as a naked codestream or in an ISO-BMFF-based box container. The container can carry metadata such as Exif, XMP and JUMBF. The Library of Congress format description explains these structures.

JPEG XL can encode an existing JPEG in a way that allows the exact original JPEG bitstream to be reconstructed later. That is different from decoding a JPEG into pixels and saving those pixels in a new lossy format: the latter does not preserve the original JPEG data. This reversible workflow can be useful when smaller storage or delivery files are desired without giving up the ability to recover the source JPEG. The Library of Congress describes the reconstruction data involved.

What JPEG XL could change for website images
Transfer size depends on the image and encoding target
JPEG XL can be smaller than JPEG in some workflows, but there is no universal winner among JXL, AVIF and WebP. In a Mozilla comparison published August 24, 2026, a photographic sample encoded at a SSIMULACRA 2 score of 62.8 was 116 kB in AVIF and 134 kB in JPEG XL. At a score of 80, the same comparison reported 227 kB for AVIF and 264 kB for JPEG XL. In lossless mode for that example, JPEG XL was 1.45 MB, compared with 1.76 MB for AVIF and 1.55 MB for lossless WebP. Mozilla showed a separate screenshot example with the same general pattern: AVIF was smaller in its cited lossy comparison and JPEG XL in lossless mode. These are examples from Mozilla, not a cross-image benchmark or a prediction for your site. See Mozilla’s comparison and methodology discussion.
WebKit’s Safari 17 announcement said that recompressing existing JPEGs as JPEG XL could reduce their size by an average of 20% without data loss, and that encoding from an original could yield files up to 60% smaller than JPEG. These are claims published by WebKit with that announcement, not guaranteed savings or an independent current benchmark for a particular website. WebKit’s Safari 17 announcement provides the context.

For a meaningful decision, encode a representative mix of your own photographs, screenshots and graphics. Compare formats at a visual quality level you would actually ship, and include lossless files only where lossless delivery matters. A single image or quality setting cannot establish the best format for every asset.
Progressive display can reveal an image before download completes
JPEG XL supports progressive coding: a browser can display a recognizable version while more image data arrives. Mozilla’s author describes an example in which a user could identify the subject of a 135 kB image after only a few kilobytes had downloaded. That is an example from a particular image and implementation, not a guaranteed threshold for all assets. Mozilla also notes that its Firefox implementation supports progressive rendering, while Safari’s implementation lacks that feature. Support for the format therefore does not guarantee support for every feature in the format. Mozilla discusses progressive rendering and its browser implementation.

WebKit highlighted progressive loading when it announced JPEG XL support for Safari 17. Mozilla’s later comparison describes Safari’s implementation as lacking progressive rendering, illustrating that implementation details can differ or change over time. WebKit’s announcement describes Safari 17’s support.
Browser support and fallback strategy
Browser status is a moving target. As of Mozilla’s August 24, 2026 article, Mozilla described its Firefox implementation, said Chrome also intended to ship, and characterized Safari support as partial. MDN’s living image-format guide summarizes JPEG XL support as Safari, Chrome behind a flag and Firefox Nightly. These snapshots do not establish universal support in stable browsers. Check the stable browser versions and audience data relevant to your launch before relying on JXL.

Use a <picture> element to offer JXL where supported and a fallback image for other browsers. WebKit’s Safari 17 announcement demonstrates this pattern, and MDN explains that a plain <img> alone does not select alternative formats. WebKit’s example uses an image/JXL source with a JPEG fallback.

For responsive delivery, provide appropriately sized variants in each format rather than sending a desktop-sized image to every screen. Keep the fallback suitable in both appearance and dimensions. Explicit width and height let the browser reserve layout space and help limit layout shifts. After deployment, test the markup in the browser versions your visitors actually use; a successful load in one browser does not verify the fallback path or progressive behavior elsewhere.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.JPEG XL compared with AVIF and WebP
| Decision point | What the evidence suggests | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Lossy photographic size | In Mozilla’s cited sample at two quality points, AVIF files were smaller than JXL. Mozilla cautions through its examples that outcomes depend on the image and settings. Mozilla comparison | Compare encodes at a quality acceptable for your own photographs; do not infer site-wide savings from the sample. |
| Lossless size | JPEG XL was smaller than AVIF and lossless WebP in Mozilla’s cited photographic example; a separate screenshot example showed the same general pattern. Mozilla comparison | Test the lossless assets that matter to your workflow rather than assuming the same result for every graphic. |
| Progressive display | JPEG XL supports progressive coding, but browser implementations vary. Mozilla describes AVIF as having only basic progressive rendering support. Mozilla comparison | Assess the actual browser implementation and loading experience, not just the format specification. |
| JPEG preservation | JPEG XL can reversibly recompress JPEG data so the original JPEG bitstream can be reconstructed. JPEG Committee; Library of Congress | Consider JXL when reversibility is important to storage or delivery workflows. |
| Browser availability | Mozilla’s August 2026 description and MDN’s living guide report differing, version-dependent support snapshots. Mozilla; MDN | Ship a fallback and validate target stable browsers before making JXL your only asset. |
Mozilla’s editorial summary is that JPEG XL is strong for lossless imagery, progressive rendering and further compressing JPEGs without quality loss, while AVIF is strong for web-quality photography and images combining sharp edges with flat surfaces. That is a useful comparison lens, not a rule that settles every image or pipeline. Read Mozilla’s full comparison.
When JPEG XL is worth trying
- Try it when preserving the ability to reconstruct original JPEG files is valuable.
- Evaluate it for assets where lossless size or progressive presentation could improve the user experience.
- Compare it with AVIF and WebP on a representative image set and at a quality level that meets your standards.
- Keep a fallback until the browser versions used by your audience support the format reliably.
- Measure the delivered files and actual page experience; the format alone does not guarantee a site-wide performance improvement.
