Wiring it safely depends on whether the machine uses a contactor-based starter or a variable-frequency drive (VFD); there is no universal terminal-by-terminal diagram. Use the wiring diagram and instructions for the exact equipment, and have a qualified person perform work appropriate to the control voltage and machine.
What a jog button does
Jogging, also called inching, is brief motor movement for positioning or setup: the motor should move while the operator presses and holds the jog control, then stop when it is released. In a conventional three-wire starter, a start button typically energizes the contactor coil, and an auxiliary holding contact—often called a seal-in contact—keeps that coil energized after the start button is released. A jog circuit must prevent that ordinary holding path from keeping the motor on after the jog button is released. BCcampus explains the holding-contact principle and jog circuits.

Contactor-based jog wiring
A typical contactor-based system includes a stop control, overload protection, a contactor coil, a normal start and holding circuit, and a jog arrangement that prevents the holding contact from sealing in during a jog. The precise connections depend on the starter and its control components; another make or model’s terminal numbers are not a safe substitute for the equipment diagram.

Manufacturer example: separate jog relay
Rockwell Automation’s pushbutton-control wiring diagrams show a separate start, stop, and jog arrangement using a control relay. In that example, pressing JOG energizes the motor contactor coil, while the relay contacts prevent the contactor from holding in; the motor runs only while the operator holds the button. This is an example for the diagram shown, not a universal wiring map.

Why a double-contact shortcut can fail
A jog button with both normally open and normally closed contacts may be arranged so one contact interrupts the holding circuit while the other energizes the starter. BCcampus warns that this arrangement can be dangerous: if the normally closed contact recloses before the contactor has dropped out, the holding path may become complete and the motor may keep running after the jog button is released. Do not copy this arrangement as a universal shortcut; use the manufacturer-approved circuit for the starter and application.
Identify the actual control components
Before a qualified person works from the equipment diagram, identify the control-circuit voltage, coil voltage, contact numbering and normally open/normally closed states, overload contact, and any auxiliary holding contacts. “Normally open” and “normally closed” describe the component’s unactuated state. Do not infer terminal numbers or contact sequence from a different device.

Jogging with a variable-frequency drive
A VFD’s jog input and command logic are not necessarily wired like a contactor coil. Schneider Electric’s FAQ on jog operation in three-wire control describes a specific Schneider implementation: jog must be enabled and the start command activated; removing jog enable stops the motor and returns the drive to normal three-wire control. If jog is enabled while the motor is running, that drive stops and waits for the start command. These behaviors are product-specific. Use the exact drive manual for input terminals, parameter settings, jog speed, and stop behavior.

A surfaced excerpt from an older Rockwell DC3E manual says that stopping through that drive’s control terminals does not disconnect AC power and calls for a hardwired AC disconnect. Because that excerpt is hosted on a third-party manual site, confirm requirements in current official documentation for the exact drive model rather than relying on the excerpt as installation guidance.

Safety and checks before operation
Isolation, guarding, interlocks, and safe setup procedures must suit the actual machine and jurisdiction. The cited sources do not establish a universal code-compliant wiring plan. Follow the machine’s isolation and lockout procedure, use a qualified person for the applicable voltage and equipment, and do not defeat guards or interlocks for convenience.

Choose parts for the complete control system
A momentary pushbutton is only one component of a motor-control system. Depending on the design, other components may include a control relay, motor starter or contactor, overload protection, or a drive with a supported jog function. Check these factors against the equipment diagrams and ratings:
