jmi.dll is a MATLAB Java Library component from The MathWorks Inc., not a Windows system file. If Windows reports that jmi.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the MATLAB release or MATLAB Runtime that owns the file instead of copying a replacement into System32.
The correct fix depends on what is failing. It may be the full MATLAB desktop application, a compiled MATLAB program, or a third-party application that uses MATLAB Runtime. Work through the fixes below in order.
What jmi.dll does and where it belongs
MATLAB uses Java for parts of its desktop environment and Java-to-MATLAB communication. jmi.dll is a native MATLAB component associated with that integration.
MathWorks crash reports place the file inside MATLAB’s own installation tree, including paths similar to:

#1 Best Overall
C:Program FilesMATLABR2024abinwin64jmi.dll
Older installations may use a binwin32 directory. The exact path depends on the MATLAB release and architecture.
That means jmi.dll normally belongs in a MATLAB directory, not in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Do not use a generic DLL website to obtain it. A downloaded file can have the wrong MATLAB release, architecture, dependencies, or malicious modifications. Even a genuine file from another release may leave MATLAB unable to start.
Fix 1: Identify the program that is failing
Time needed: 2 to 5 minutes
First determine whether the error belongs to MATLAB itself or another application.

One-click scans. No signup required.
- Read the complete error dialog.
- Note the name of the program shown in the title bar.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab and inspect Target.
- If the path contains
MATLAB, you are repairing a full MATLAB installation. - If the program has a vendor-specific name and does not contain MATLAB, it may be a compiled MATLAB application.
- Check that program’s installation folder for
readme.txt, an installer log, or documentation mentioning MATLAB Runtime.
A compiled MATLAB application can require MATLAB Runtime even when the full MATLAB desktop is not installed. Installing full MATLAB does not automatically repair every packaged application.
Also check whether more than one MATLAB release is installed:
- Press Windows and search for MATLAB.
- Look for entries with different release names.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for
MATLABandMATLAB Runtime.
Repair the release named by the failing shortcut or error. Do not remove another working release simply because it appears older.
Fix 2: Reinstall the affected MATLAB release
Time needed: 20 minutes to several hours, depending on download speed

Before starting, save any custom scripts, toolboxes, preferences, or license information that are not already backed up.
Uninstall MATLAB on Windows 11
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected MATLAB release.
- Select the three dots beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the MathWorks uninstaller.
Uninstall MATLAB on Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Choose the affected MATLAB release.
- Select Uninstall.
- Complete the removal wizard.
Do not uninstall other MATLAB releases unless they show the same problem. Separate releases can legitimately coexist, and removing one does not repair another.
Install MATLAB again
- Use the official MathWorks account or installation media for the same MATLAB release.
- Download the installer intended for your Windows architecture.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Sign in or provide the license information requested by the installer.
- Choose the affected release and complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch MATLAB from its newly installed shortcut.
A successful repair should allow MATLAB to open without the jmi.dll message. If MATLAB opens but displays Java or preference errors, continue to the preference and Java checks below.

Time needed: 15 minutes to several hours
Use this fix when a compiled MATLAB application fails but the full MATLAB desktop is not the program showing the error.
MATLAB Runtime must match the MATLAB release used to compile the application. Do not assume that the newest available runtime supports every older application. Some packaged applications also require the same update level as the compiler release or a newer update within that release.
- Ask the application vendor which MATLAB release was used to build the program.
- Check the application folder for
readme.txtor installation documentation. - Open the official MathWorks MATLAB Runtime download page.
- Select the required release and Windows architecture.
- Download the Windows Runtime package.
- Extract the downloaded archive if it is a ZIP file.
- Open the extracted folder.
- Right-click
setup.exeand select Run as administrator. - Complete the installer.
- Restart Windows and open the compiled application again.
Install a 64-bit runtime for a 64-bit application and a 32-bit runtime for a 32-bit application where the vendor specifically requires it. A 32-bit jmi.dll from an older MATLAB installation is not a valid replacement for a 64-bit runtime component.
If the vendor cannot identify the release, collect the exact application version and ask that vendor or MathWorks support. Guessing between runtime releases is less reliable than identifying the compiler release first.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and blocked files
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Security software can quarantine or block a native MATLAB file. This is particularly likely if the error started after a security scan, an update, or a change in antivirus policy.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
jmi.dllor the MATLAB installation directory. - Expand the event and inspect the full path.
- Confirm that the path belongs to the MATLAB release you installed.
- If the file is clearly part of the legitimate MathWorks installation, follow your security product’s controlled restore or allow process.
- Restart Windows.
- Try MATLAB again.
Do not restore a file merely because its name matches. Verify the folder, installation source, and surrounding files. If the file was quarantined, reinstalling MATLAB is usually safer than manually restoring a single library because the installation may contain additional damaged or missing files.
Rank #3
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. If the same file is repeatedly quarantined after reinstalling, run a full security scan and contact MathWorks or the security vendor before creating an exclusion.
Fix 5: Reset MATLAB preferences and Java configuration
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
A Java startup error does not always mean that jmi.dll is missing. Corrupted MATLAB preferences, unsupported Java configuration, or a damaged class-path setting can prevent MATLAB from initializing its Java interface.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Typical symptoms include:
Fatal Internal Error: Cannot locate or initialize class com/mathworks/jmi/OpaqueJavaInterface
or:
warning: Class com/mathworks/jmi/nativematlab not found -- unable to register native methods.
Reset preferences without deleting them:
- Close MATLAB.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
%APPDATA%MathWorksMATLAB
- Press Enter.
- Find the folder associated with the affected MATLAB release.
- Right-click the folder and select Rename.
- Add
.oldto the folder name, such as:
R2024a_old
- Start MATLAB again.
MATLAB should create a new preference folder. If it starts normally, the old preferences were likely damaged. You can copy needed settings back gradually, but do not replace the entire new folder immediately.
If MATLAB starts far enough to accept commands, check its Java information with:
version -java
Use the Java version supported by that MATLAB release. Do not force an unrelated system Java installation into MATLAB’s configuration. MathWorks provides jenv and matlab_jenv commands for supported Java configuration, but the available options vary by release.
If resetting preferences changes nothing and the literal error still says that jmi.dll is missing, return to the reinstall or MATLAB Runtime steps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 6: Check the installation path and dependencies
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
“The specified module could not be found” can be misleading. Windows may find jmi.dll but fail to load one of the libraries that it depends on.
Check the expected installation directory:
- Right-click the MATLAB shortcut.
- Select Open file location.
- Right-click the shortcut again if necessary and select Properties.
- Note the MATLAB installation folder.
- Browse to its
bindirectory. - Open
win64orwin32, depending on the installation. - Look for
jmi.dll.
If the file is present but MATLAB still fails:
- Do not copy it to another folder.
- Do not rename a file from another release.
- Do not replace it with a 32-bit or 64-bit alternative.
- Repair the complete installation using the reinstall procedure.
Confirm that the program and its MATLAB components use compatible architectures. A 64-bit application cannot normally load a 32-bit native library, and a 32-bit application cannot use a 64-bit library. Windows 11 is commonly used with 64-bit software, but the application’s architecture still controls which runtime it needs.
A file can also be blocked by permissions. If the MATLAB folder is on a removable drive, network location, or manually moved directory, reinstall it to a normal local path using the official installer.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall related drivers only when symptoms point to them
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
Graphics and virtualization problems can cause MATLAB startup failures that resemble Java or native-library problems. This is not the primary fix for a genuinely missing jmi.dll, but it is relevant when MATLAB crashes after opening, fails only on a virtual machine, or shows display-related errors.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- If the problem began after a driver update, open the adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available.
For a clean reinstall, download the correct driver from the graphics hardware manufacturer, uninstall the existing package only when the manufacturer’s instructions call for it, and restart before installing the replacement. Avoid driver changes if the only symptom is a missing MATLAB file.
Manually checking several hardware vendors and release branches is tedious, especially when you are also comparing MATLAB and Windows compatibility. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, while the full version performs the driver installation; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected MATLAB release remains the definitive fix for a missing jmi.dll.
Fix 8: Repair broader Windows component corruption
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes, plus restart time
jmi.dll is not a protected Windows component, so SFC will not recreate it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself shows additional corruption, the MATLAB installer will not run, or other system applications are also failing.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open the Start menu.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the MATLAB or MATLAB Runtime application.
If DISM reports that it cannot obtain repair files, check Windows Update and run the command again. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test the application after restarting. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, Windows component corruption is less likely to be the cause.
Repeating SFC and DISM without recording what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan and identify Windows issues, while the full version performs its repair; it is optional, and it cannot replace the official MATLAB reinstall when the application file itself is damaged.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 usually does not fix jmi.dll
regsvr32 is intended for registering certain Windows COM and ActiveX libraries that expose a registration entry point. It is not a general-purpose repair command for every DLL.
jmi.dll is a MATLAB native component loaded as part of MATLAB’s own Java and runtime environment. Registering it manually is normally unnecessary and can produce errors such as a missing entry point or an architecture mismatch.
Do not run commands such as:
regsvr32 jmi.dll
unless MathWorks support gives you a release-specific instruction. Reinstalling the complete MATLAB release restores the file and its related dependencies in the correct locations.
Common causes of jmi.dll errors
| Likely cause | What usually resolves it |
|---|---|
| Incomplete or corrupted MATLAB installation | Uninstall and reinstall the affected release |
| Missing MATLAB Runtime | Install the runtime matching the compiled application |
| Wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture | Install the matching MATLAB or Runtime architecture |
| Runtime release or update mismatch | Identify the compiler release and install its required runtime |
| Antivirus quarantine | Verify the path, restore only when trusted, then reinstall if needed |
| Corrupted MATLAB preferences | Rename the release preference folder |
| Unsupported Java configuration | Restore the Java setup supported by that MATLAB release |
| Missing dependency | Repair the complete installation rather than copying one DLL |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Malware or disk failure | Scan the system, check disk health, and reinstall from a trusted source |
What not to do
- Do not download
jmi.dllfrom a random DLL repository. - Do not copy it into
System32orSysWOW64. - Do not replace it with a file from a different MATLAB release.
- Do not use a 32-bit file in a 64-bit installation.
- Do not install the newest MATLAB Runtime blindly.
- Do not remove every MATLAB release when only one is failing.
- Do not assume SFC can repair a third-party MATLAB file.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus protection.
- Do not use
regsvr32as a generic DLL repair tool.
When to contact MathWorks support
Escalate after reinstalling the matching MATLAB release or Runtime if the error continues. Gather:

This information helps distinguish a damaged installation from a dependency, Java preference, graphics, security, or disk problem.
FAQ
Is jmi.dll part of Windows?
No. Available MATLAB installation paths place it inside MATLAB’s release directory under binwin32 or binwin64. It should not normally be installed in a Windows system folder.
Is jmi.dll malware?
The filename alone does not prove that a file is safe or malicious. Check whether it is located inside the expected MathWorks installation and whether it was installed by the official MATLAB or MATLAB Runtime installer. An unexpected copy in a temporary or system directory deserves a security scan.
Can I download jmi.dll separately?
That is not a safe repair method. The file must match the MATLAB release, architecture, dependencies, and installation layout. Use the official MathWorks installer or the matching MATLAB Runtime package.
Does MATLAB Runtime include jmi.dll?
A MATLAB Runtime installation contains the components required by applications compiled for its matching MATLAB release. Whether a particular application needs a specific file depends on how it was packaged. Install the Runtime release identified by the application vendor rather than copying one DLL.
Will installing the latest MATLAB Runtime fix an older program?
Not necessarily. Compiled applications generally require the MATLAB Runtime release used to build them, and some require a matching update level or newer update within that release.
Should I run SFC for a missing jmi.dll error?
Only when Windows has broader corruption symptoms or the MATLAB installer itself cannot operate. SFC repairs protected Windows files; it does not recreate a MATLAB component.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when jmi.dll is visible?
The loader may be finding jmi.dll but failing to load one of its dependencies. Reinstall the complete MATLAB release or matching Runtime instead of moving the visible file.
Can multiple MATLAB releases be installed together?
Yes. Multiple releases can coexist. Repair or remove only the release associated with the failing shortcut unless other installations show the same problem.
