Jira Cloud is the stronger fit when your team needs configurable work types and workflows, Scrum backlogs and sprints, and established agile reporting. GitHub Projects is a natural fit when planning should stay close to GitHub issues and pull requests, with flexible views, fields, charts, and automation. Neither is a universal winner: choose according to how your team structures work, plans and reports, and manages account limits.

How Jira structures team work
Spaces and configuration models
A Jira space groups related work items and can serve a product, project, team, or service. Work types, workflows, screens, and fields are customizable. The choice between team-managed and company-managed spaces affects how configuration is governed: team-managed settings are controlled within an individual team’s space, while company-managed spaces use shared standardized configuration set by Jira admins. That makes the distinction relevant to teams balancing local autonomy with consistency across groups. See Atlassian’s explanation of Jira spaces.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesScrum and Kanban planning
Jira’s software templates include Scrum and Kanban, but not every space is necessarily configured the same way. The Scrum template is designed for fixed-length iterations and documents a backlog, sprints, and roadmap. Its out-of-the-box reports include the sprint report and velocity chart. The Kanban template centers work on a visual board and describes work-in-progress limits. These are template-specific capabilities, so check the space’s actual setup before assuming a particular report or planning view is in use. Details are in Atlassian’s template documentation.

How GitHub Projects organizes work
Views for issues, pull requests, and ideas
GitHub Projects combines table, board, and roadmap views with GitHub issues and pull requests. Projects can also include ideas, so teams can track work that has not yet become an issue. Views can be filtered, sorted, grouped, or sliced to suit different ways of looking at the same work. GitHub documents custom fields, templates, iteration fields, charts, insights, status updates, access management, and data export as part of its Projects feature set. See GitHub’s Projects overview and Planning and tracking with Projects.

Automation and extensibility
Built-in workflows can set fields when items are added or changed, and can automatically add or archive items based on criteria. For example, GitHub’s best-practices guidance describes adding a pull request to a project and assigning it a status when it becomes ready for review. Teams needing more control can use the GraphQL API or GitHub Actions. The overview specifies a limit of up to 50 fields per project, counting built-in metadata and custom fields; verify the applicable account entitlements when a capability is important to your setup. See GitHub’s Projects best practices and Projects overview.

Which one fits your team?
Choose Jira Cloud when workflow structure and agile reporting matter most
- Your team needs configurable work types and workflows, with either team-level configuration or shared admin-managed standards.
- You use Scrum and want a documented backlog-and-sprint structure with sprint reports and a velocity chart.
- You need roadmap capabilities and can select a plan whose roadmap and automation entitlements fit your requirements.
Choose GitHub Projects when planning belongs alongside GitHub work
- Your team tracks issues and pull requests in GitHub and wants project views connected directly to those items.
- You want to shape planning with tables, boards, roadmaps, custom fields, charts, and iteration fields rather than start from one prescribed methodology.
- You want built-in workflows and may extend automation with GitHub Actions or the GraphQL API.
Check these points before deciding
- Map your work items. List what the team tracks—such as planned tasks, issues, pull requests, or ideas—and confirm how each product represents that work.
- Identify required planning and reporting. Decide whether you need fixed-length Scrum sprints and named agile reports, flexible project views and charts, or both.
- Set governance expectations. In Jira, determine whether teams should configure their own spaces or rely on shared admin-managed standards. In GitHub Projects, check access management and the project fields your process needs.
- Verify limits and entitlements. Check Jira plan-specific user, roadmap, and automation allowances, as well as GitHub account entitlements and the 50-field project limit documented by GitHub.
- Test the actual workflow. Use a representative set of work items to see whether the views, updates, reporting, and automation match the way your team works. Product documentation describes available features but does not establish which tool will produce better outcomes for your team.
